- PLEASE NOTE- This is not a 'straight out of the box test' , my Hohner harp has been partially self-customised.

Great video Ed. I myself play on Dabell story harps. Excellent harps
Great review. Thanks!
I'm a Korean player who mainly plays Marine Band, and only yesterday have I learned about the existence of Dabell!
Immediately ordered Bb Noble model, and got it today(domestic shipping yay). Amazing volume it got! I'm gonna dabble it a bit more and compare it with Bb Marine Band in the meantime.
Informative indeed!
With best wishes from Hamburg Germany.. ☺
Da bell Noble closely resembles a Kongsheng Sunrise, which seems to clone a Suzuki Manji, while the new Bushman Delta Frost copies this model too.
This is fantastic, thanks so much!!!
You’re welcome:)
Interesting vid Ed cheers! How about a video demonstrating how you set up your hohners to be so responsive??
😃Ooh that’s a long tedious one but I can recommend Andrew Zajac’s vids
Easiest method is to learn how to adjust the reed gapping. It sounds complicated, but it’s really not. Andrew Z has some great tutorials showing the basics. It’s 100% worth learning if you really enjoy harp.
Try the Kongsheng Mars. I have six and haven’t needed any work on them. Mind you I possibly accept a few minor flaws as I really don’t like working on my harps. But they are the best out of the box harps I’ve tried.
what are the reeds made from? I think Brass is the only way for me I'm afraid :)
@@TheHarmonicaBarge Not a 100% sure but I think they’re phosphor bronze. Thanks for the great videos, they’re helping me enormously.
At 1:55 "...there's something about the Marine Band that's a little bit crap..." That cracked me up, yes! I hate sharp edges on harmonicas! Mostly play Hohner Rockets for Richter tuning and Seydel Orchestra S for solo tuning. But for my other odds and ends harps, I round the corners off. It'd been a while since I'd gotten any new harps, but I got a few cheap ones in the mail yesterday for my "spares/stays-at-school" box. I wasn't expecting the best tone and response, but got really grumpy at the corners. How hard is it for manufacturers to round off the corners of their plastic molds? Ah, well! Thanks for the video. I'm looking forward to trying a DaBell. I'd love to see a follow-up video of you revisiting these two after you've set up the DaBell properly as you have your Hohner.
ha yes I know what you mean! I started sanding the corners a bit which certainly helps. Nice idea to do a follow up video, the only problem is the dabell uses phosphor bronze reeds and I just think I prefer to work on brass. I've not really worked on PB reeds much.
I was wondering about the Dabelle!? Thanks for the review! I'll be sticking to eastop!
My "go-to" harps are Eastop. They have a rich tone, are responsive, and bend easily. And they're 1/2 the price of other brands. People can say what they will, but I like Eastop.
@@MrSpanky2001 yeah I really like them..
Which Easttops do you like?
@@MP-tf7cc I like 008K
I actually own a DaBell Story in E, which costs a bit less than the Noble, and it's okay. The 3 blow is a little leaky, but I really like the shape of it. When comparing to my axe of choice (the Hohner Golden Melody), the tuning on the Noble is a lot harsher compared to the GM and both are in Equal Temperment, which is known to be harsh on chords.
Close the gapping on the blow reeds a bit and it really helps it shine.
So what do you do to your harps when you buy them? What is the easy routine we mortals can do when we buy a new harp?
Hello there! That's quite a long answer and no easy routine really but I learned everything from Andrew Zajac- he has many videos on TH-cam
I have a Dabell Story in A and it’s one of my favorite harps, along with my SP20s and Rockets. Personally, I much prefer it over my standard MB in A. If it were a MB Deluxe, that might be a different “story” (no pun intended).
interesting, Thanks! I think for me the Phosphor bronze reeds just feel too different. Every harp I've tried that's not brass feels strange
👍
Very informative - thanks. But you could try looking at the camera, mate! 🙂
Ha ha yes, I’m in my new studio and still getting used to it- thanks though, I’ll aim to do better next time!
Ah now I see what you mean, it’s because Of the mirror screen on camera to the side!
I must remember to look at the lens 😄
@@TheHarmonicaBarge you can usually slide that window over by the lens.
@@callenski thanks!
As you can see, I’m more of a musician than a camera man
With all my harmonicas (I have three) the bend on the third hole sounds more dull and muffled than the others. I have a Special 20, a Crossover, and a Lee Oskar. The Crossover is actually the worst for the third hole bends, it's really muted sounding. I can bend all the other ones fine. Is this normal?
The problem with factory harps is inconsistency. If you're unlucky, the reed shape or gapping isn't great on hole 2 or 3 making the bends feel weak and unresponsive.
Do you do harmonica tweaking for other people? Like if they send the harmonica to you?
I'm not currently offering any customising for others as I don't really have time :)
Check out Andrew Zajac channel on TH-cam, I learnt a lot from his vids
Dude you are not looking accurately at the camera..
Ha ha yes, first video with the new camera!
It has a mirror by the side 😀
Great review thanks!
