    I played and taught the flute for years, then had an operation on my jaw bone. Thanks to you, I picked up tin whistle and played with some satisfaction. Just this week I decided it was time to package up all my flute music and books and give them away. Now you show me this and say it's affordable - my heart is fluttering like I've met The One. Thank You Cutie Pie (Luckily that box of music is still by the door)

    Thank you for a very informative video. I am 74 and played the tin whistle for many years but always frustrated because I could not practice whenever I wanted due to the piercing sound of the whistle and it annoying neighbors.
    I bought one of these EWI several months ago and because you can control the volume or use headphones I can play in the middle of the night if I cant get to sleep🕟

    I bought the Chinese version of this musical instrument, same hardware but different firmware; among the available sounds the violin and harmonica are missing, replaced by two oriental musical instruments: hulusi and suona.
    The sound coming out of the headphone/speaker jack is too loud and distorted. To correct this, you need to set the volume to level 1-2, not higher. This way you can connect it to an amplifier, greatly improving the sound quality, since the small internal speaker cannot play optimally.
    But what makes the difference between this and other similar instruments is the MIDI connection via USB cable.
    Simply perfect!
    No delay (performance impossible to achieve with Bluetooth) and the ability to play any kind of instrument by connecting this digital saxophone to the various music software available on a PC or tablet (I use a Samsung S2 with Android system).
    This way there is no distortion because the sound comes out of the PC/tablet and not the instrument, so it can be amplified without any problems.
    I, for example, bought a small portable amplifier (Donner 5W electric guitar amplifier), the result is really satisfactory.

    I just wanted to say thank you for the information. I just went on Amazon and ordered it for myself. It has been years since I played saxophone, when I had to learn it for my college major in music education, but hopefully it’s just like riding a bike and I’ll pick back up on it really fast. If it wasn’t for this video, I would’ve never known about it. Thank you again.

    Not sure about sound quality as a main instrument, but it definitely can work for specific projects and genres. If it works with PC as an output for direct recording, then it's a really nice gadget.

      You'll need some kind of wireless BT connector, like a WidiPlus.
      I own a Blackstar Carry-On DWI, which is a very similar instrument and I get noticeable lag when connecting to iPhone XR (which isn't present with any of my other BT Midi controllers).
      Best to stick to high attack sounds, ambient noises, etc.

      Stef Haynes also released a video for this instrument. It seems like a nice complement to this video. Mr. Haynes demonstrates that this instrument can also be plugged directly into a computer using the included USB cable to control software based instruments. There does seem to be any latency using that approach.

    Cutie Pie- This was a really really really wonderful instructional video. I just got mine yesterday. I was looking for a beginner's video and found this pretty easily. You are terrific instructor. I played sax and clarinet for 12 years and then for no good reason stopped playing. I love hearing the super talented EWI players like Richard Elliott, Jeff Kashiwa, and Keiko Matsui. Now that I saw your video I want to start learning scales and playing again on this EWI and then upgrade to a more pro level EWI. In the interim, I would love to take a few lessons from you to get me playing again. If you do that please let me know, or if you know another on-line instructor. When I can play "When I'm Sixty Four" and "Obla-di Oh blah dah,", I will know I am getting my game back on. thanks Cutie Pie!

    I'm a sax/clarinet player and picked up one of these. It's a surprisingly good instrument for the low price - but the one thing I couldn't find was a way to tune this up or down, so basically, I'm the "piano" everyone else tunes to. I'm used to an octave key to raise the note a full octave, but I'm having fun playing with the lower octave key. The transpose function lets me put this in any key I want - something I have wished I could do on a non-electronic woodwind. There is no bite sensor, but the air sensor is impressive.

    • @CutiepieTinWhistle
      @CutiepieTinWhistle  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can play this across three octaves (in every key) using the pads at the back of the instrument 😊 Covering the bottom button at the back gives you low notes, not covering either button gives you mid notes, and covering the top one gives you high notes, but it's certainly a little tricky to get used to!
      There's no way to fine tune as such. You're stuck with A440hz...but you can hit every note chromatically using the smaller buttons at the bottom (or top) in any key, so it's pretty versatile 😁 definitely preferable to storing a whistle in every key, haha 🤣

    • @Robyn19fnq
      @Robyn19fnq ปีที่แล้ว

    If I play this instrument in a live setting with, for example, an accordion, it's quite common that I'd have to retune it from 440hz to 443Hz. On a conventional tuneable whistle that's just a matter of lengthening/shortening the tube. But what can we do on the Vangoa??

What I need help with is to learn how to transpose my EWI from a key in D to C, and would you happen to know the keys corresponding with the numbers (-12 to 12) on the EWI? Hi, if you have a smartphone, you should be able to download a free 'tuner' app :)
      Then you can cover 6 holes (like on tin whistle) and this will be the key of the instrument. (I think it starts in C as the default?)
      You can also use free tuner sites online like this one:

    Have had one of these for a while now this video helped me decide to take a chance so thank you for posting, one thing I notice and I wish you had control over was how touch sensitive the keys are sometimes you just brush against them and it activates the keys when you don't want them too especially the two at the back I'd prefer buttons tbh but not a massive issue if you're careful with your finger placements. But yeah all in all a great little addition to my music gear and I use it often especially as you can just plug headphones in so convenient, for under £100 well worth it and works well as a Midi controller too though you do loose the pressure control so it's just on off like a keyboard etc.

    I play flute and sax, since our breath has moisture in it, the instruments get wet on the inside. So, after playing my instruments I spend a few minutes with a rag to dry it out. This is especially important to extend the life of the pads. Although this instrument has no pads, I would imagine over time it may get nasty inside and be susceptible to mold. Does this instrument have a way to clean the inside?

    • @CutiepieTinWhistle
      @CutiepieTinWhistle  ปีที่แล้ว

      It had a drainage hole that goes right the way through, you may be able to push a very soft pipe cleaner into that. It would certainly need to be left out to dry completely before storing though.

      I think it acts as a Bluetooth speaker, so you can play a backing track through it, whilst playing the instrument...

    Looks and sounds interesting and can currently be bought from different sellers on ebay in Europe for about 60 Euro.
    Unfortunately it is delivered from China - with all the disadvantages this brings. That is the main reason I am not giving it a try.
    From Vangoa it doesn't seem to be available...

    How does it feel in your hands? I'm wondering if the rectangular profile feels odd, especially for those used to playing round-bore instruments. Also, is it heavy?

    • @CutiepieTinWhistle
      @CutiepieTinWhistle  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not heavy, and doesn't feel unusual to me at all because of the shape. It's really the thumb pads that get me 😂 very difficult to get used to, but certainly doable!

      @@RoBoXXL well I usually recommend a Clarke Sweetone in the key of D for beginners.
      Otherwise, Lír whistles make a great set of whistle keys which are wonderful whistles for intermediate players onwards. As you play though, you'll come to understand what whistle is most suitable to your playing style and which keys will be most useful to you. It's not ready recommending whistles for experienced players for this reason.

    I think in the right hands it could be an amazing musical Instrument, how ever it’s not for me , I have electricity piano that has so many features like this electric MIDI EWI , I liked probably the 7 & 8 on it but it’s certainly no tin whistle , great for creative people for sure. The electric world looks like it’s growing , even electric drums these days .
