    Byculla - A rich Marathi person known as ‘Bhai’ owned a huge warehouse which is called as ‘Khala (L sounds like D in Marathi), Bhai cha Khala became Byculla.

    About Cotton Green: During the times of the EAST INDIA COMPANY, there used to be a huge empty plot of land in front of Town Hall (Asiatic Society), where Horniman Circle lies today. That was where cotton from Vidharba used to be procured and shipped over to Europe. That area what we now know as Horniman Circle was called Bombay Green. Eventually, this area was named Cotton Green. In the 1840s this market was shifted to Colaba, thereby changing the location of Cotton Green too! Eventually, when the Harbour Line commenced operations, they moved it to the current location and eventually that gave its name.

    Nicely presented and very sweet anchor but I feel it was not well researched.
    Had the British found it difficult to pronounce the word SHOR, they wouldn't use another Hindi word CHOR for that.
    CHOR BAZAAR was indeed a Bazaar where stolen goods were disposed of at ridiculously low prices.
    BANDRA is derived from the local name Vaandre and not Bunder (port)

    • @shreyansshrishrimal1761
      @shreyansshrishrimal1761 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Vandre is Marathi way of saying Bander, Bander is an arabic word for port commonly used by traders who used to bring their goods from Arabic contries. Also Clearly britishers used to find shor and chor tongue twisting and were more comfortable with a more used word that is Chor.

      I've another interesting story. There were a lot of monkeys in bandra so vanar become vandra and then vandre, bandar in hindi so it became baandra and in english bandra.

    Today's Apolo Bandar ( The port where Gateway of India is standing) was once locally called as Palwa bandar (Palwa is fish) that Palwa turned in Polo by Portuguese, and then Apolo by Britishers. Thus Palwa Bandar (Bandar means Port in marathi not monkey) turned in Apolo Bandar.

    Here it is how Mumbai got its name: " Many fishing families were living in the suburbs of the modern city of Bombay. These fishing families were the old inhabitants of the city before it became Bombay. Their traditional deity was the goddess Mumbávatii. Vatii becomes bai in Maháráśt́rii Prákrta, so accordingly Mumbávatii became Mumbábai and, with the passage of time, Mumbái. The word mumbái has been common in both Marathi and Gujarati since that time and remains so. The British turned this Mumbái into Bombay and this “Bombay” became Bombái in Hindi and Bengali.... Recently the government of Maharashtra has changed the name Bombái to Mumbái. This is a praiseworthy action." - Shrii PR Sarkar

    For your information, it’s ‘कोळी’ with the hard ‘L’ sound & not ‘कोली’. Hence its कुळाबा & not कोलाबा. Same goes for वरळी which is the actual native pronunciation.

    You overlooked the most important one. That of BOMBAY. The Britishers called it Bombay. But it has now been rechristened to its original name, MUMBAI. This is because of MUMBA DEVI the presiding Devi of the region. Ask any business man and you will know that.

Just at that time a morcha passed him and an independence activist mistook him for a Britisher and yelled at him to "quit India". Larsen replied, "Gladly, if you help me quit Pydhonie first"

    My home area is called Matunga. There are many stories how it came to be. One is that at one time , in remote times, the Ashram of Matanga Muni stood there, and was called Matangashram, which became Matunga .There is a temple there, which stood at the site of the Ashram, and is behind the Aurora theater. The name KIng's Circle, still called by the same name, was given in honor of King Emperor , Victoria's son, King Edward, when it was developed from a barren area to be the last outpost of then Bombay. At that time, Dadar was the last outpost, and the trams which were running till the sixties, ran till Dadar, and so was called the terminus, Dadar TT or Dadar Tram Terminus. The trams were lengthened to KIng's Circle in the late 30s, when BIT or Bombay Improvement Trust, started building in this area. BB Dadar was Dadar West, which was covered then by the Bombay Baroda and Central India Railway also known as BB&CI. We still call it BB Dadar, and Dadar TT, even though those two organizations do not exist anymore. Sion was the portugeese version of the word Shiv, where a Shiva temple Stood once or it may have been Shivaji's lookout fort. This fort existed even in the 60s, in all its glory.

      Chor bazaar was in fact chor bazaar. In my youth, we used to go to Chor Bazaar, where stolen things could be bought for a song. Tata furnished his taj mahal hotel at Gateway, mostly from items bought here, and used to be considered without provenance, second hand, and hence chor bazaar.

    Hanging Garden is not how it got its name, the place used to be cemetery for Parsi community, where Parsi's hanged the dead body because they believed life is a part of nature and so should be given back to nature. Also, the garden had vultures and crows, which eats almost everything from the dead, hence the place was used for cemetery.

    • @thattravellingguy
      @thattravellingguy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Parsi's don't hang their dead bodies. The dead body is placed on a dry well that has a wire net. The (vultures {now crows and kites} would scavenge the body and the bones would fall into the dry well, where it would over time and due to exposure to elements disintegrate to earth. The vultures would eat the body in 15 mins flat. Hence there was no decomposing odour etc. Now that the vultures are no more the scavenging process takes much longer. Hence solar inceneration is now being used.
