Skylar Grey talks about how she and her producer made the hook and brought it to Em. Em went away to another room for a few minutes and came back with the song. She said it brought her to tears. if memory serves, Em wrote Dre's verse too because as everyone knows he's a producer and not a lyricist. there's no question that Dre and Em together are magic.
I think the summary about what the song is about from Genius explains the song (which is 11 years old) very well: Em talks about Dre being stuck creatively, unable to make music the way he used to due to his grief and depression. Em, who went through this himself after his best friend (Proof) died in 2006, is making a passionate attempt to get through to him so Dre will start believing in his own abilities again. Dre is a “perfectionist”, but the legend is currently stuck in the mud and Eminem is afraid for him. Eminem references his own struggles to make it and Dre’s assistance, and also cites the super-producer’s personal troubles including the death of his son, Andre Young Jr. Dre then rhymes about the pair’s history, from the song "Guilty Conscience” to the present.
Definitely should have checked out the music video with this one! Provides some clues/insights into what’s going on with Dre and his mental/physical state during this time. Awesome song, lyrically and musically.
Go check the actual video for this song. It brings everything together. This is a coming back song for Dre. Lost his oldest son and his marriage. Drew was at a very low point in his life. This is Eminem being there as support for Dre. The ending of the actual video is even more powerful. Dre is giving "flowers" to Eazy E. RIP Eric "Eazy E" Wright!
I know Eminem and Dre get the shine in this song, but you should really check out Skylar's solo work, specifically her newest self-titled album. Very emotional, vulnerable, deep and melancholy. And top tier quality music. I think you'd enjoy it and provide a lot of valuable commentary
@@Ian-qt5si she’s great with rap hooks for sure and that’s how she made a name for herself (starting with Where’d You Go in 2005) but her songwriting talent is up there with the best of them. She’s so good
@@michaelsaylor4903 you haven’t listened to enough then. She’s got stuff in various genres, styles, tempos etc. Her new stuff is definitely slow and melancholy. Totally understand if that’s not your taste, but it’s still incredible work
Dre came out with an album in the early 00s and later announced his next album would be called Detox. After over a decade of waiting Dre has scrapped the album, started over, and scrapped again multiple times. At this point he was doing a lot of second guessing himself and feeling like nothing he came out with would live up to more than a decade of anticipation. A few years after this he announced he was dropping the title Detox and starting fresh just one more time. A few years after that they announced the Straight Outta Compton movie based on Dre and the rest of N.W.A’s rise to fame story and that Dre’s new album would be the soundtrack for the movie and he finally released it.
Soulmates. Exact pieces to each other's puzzle.Ying and Yang co-operation at its best. Feeding good energy, sometimes going at each other with constructive criticism but always an authentic understanding. Helped each other and saved each other's lives multiple times in multiple fashions. Living that life of evolving empathy
Dr. Dre's long-awaited album "DETOX", has been put on hold for more than 10 years now. (When an artist is a perfectionist, but suffers from depression, you can expect a delay in his work.)
Yes another awesome review. This is about how dr Dre went through a dark time and lost his son. And he wanted to let him know how much he meant to him almost like he was a dad to Eminem. Brilliant song
Hey there Doc! I know you prefer to focus on the song and lyrics. But this is one that I cannot stress enough that you need to watch the video - even if it's not a reaction video. There's SOOOO much emotion and context communicated in the visuals. As for this song itself, to fully appreciate it, a person really needs to reflect on how strong the relationship is between Dr. Dre and Eminem. Eminem fully recognizes where his life was, where it was headed - to live and die as a broke nobody with a failed dream in Detroit - to becoming the most successful hip-hop/rap artist of all time, literally comparable in fame and success to Michael Jackson or Elvis Presley. And, more importantly, he recognizes that every ounce of that success happened because Dr. Dre took a chance on him when he never needed to, when everyone told him not to, and , in reality, when it was an unimaginably risky gamble for Dre to do it, but Dre believed in him and was willing to risk that. He sees in Dre a friend, a mentor, a savior and (I'm willing to bet) in a lot of ways, a father figure. The song is deeper than just "I want you to be okay." It's sadness, anger, terror but also hopefulness - your biggest hero is going through something so severe that you're not sure if they can come back from it, and you're begging, crying, and screaming to not have to see them fall from the pedestal on which you've placed them.
This is such a well phrased explanation of this song! I think one of the most special things about Em is the discussions that his work inspires in the people that really enjoy and understand his music.
Great reaction. Please react to more of eminem and skylar grey. Some of their songs are "tragic endings", "twisted" and "kill for you". All very good songs.
It’s been a while since I listened to this track, and I remember an interview with Dre, Iovine, and Em where they talked about exactly this, when they first met. I could be incorrect, but we need a *The Way I Am* reaction if you haven’t done one
Dre saved Eminem then Eminem saved Dre 🤘🏻 great reaction Doc, i believe the music video would of hit a little better for you, lets do a 2.0 with the video next 🥃✌🏻🤘🏻
The 3 Eminem songs tou really have to listen are first “lose yourself”. You can’t miss this one, one of the best in rap history. Secondly you should go to “renegade” featuring Jay-Z he’s got insane rhyming, maybe his best ever. And last I would recommend “rock bottom”, a very beautiful song. Also you have to listen to “the way I am” and “till I collapse” both great too.
Oh man, you are not watching the actual video? Or is that just for us on screen? Edit: please do another video watching the actual video! As I get deeper into this, it's just the lyrics. Many of your questions are answered by the visuals. This is one of my favorite songs.
This is another iconic collaboration. This was later in Em's career in the last decade. Obviously, an homage to Dr. Dre to encourage him in the midst of the loss of his son. Em looks up to him, as Dre took a massive risk in Em and saw something in him when no one else did because of their blatant racism towards white people doing rap. It wasn't common at that time, for a white man to do it better than most black artists. Em changed the game forever, while still paying respects to the OG's of Rap.
You should watch the video. It gives context into why this was written and what was happening with Dre. As powerful as the song is, with the vid it's even more so. The images come to mind when I hear this.
Dr. Dre is One of if not the GREATEST creative INSTRUMENTAL Artist's of all time AS WELL AS a Corner Stone of the Hip-Hop community THE GOAT WITH A GOAT A.K.A. THE GOAT'S!!! $,$$$,$$$,$$$,$$$.$$
Amazing, I can only imagine your reaction at songs like Nobody Can Save Me or Heavy by Linkin Park. 👏🏼 Thanks for Sharing, all of those songs mean a lot to me.
Check out.. "The Defiant Ones" and you will understand..!!!! It would even be cool if you did a reaction to it... Have Nick check it out then he can guide you as to which part to react to...!!!
God I love Sky sadly she had gone trough some trouble recently but she is hyped up for more we can definetly expect her to do some new tracks with Eminem
Dre's son OD'd.... This is a little easier for the storyline with the music video. You get to see what happened and why this song starts where it does.
Eminem Toy Soldier. About the rap beef and how he lost a friend during this time. In the video Proof plays the person who dies and a while later Proof dies the same way. This wrecks Em and starts the addiction again, but worst.
U should try react to yelawolf, he got signed by em to shady records. a bit controvercial signing, the white guy signing another white guy... but once u listen, u understand why. :o U could start out with Yelawolf - Pop the trunk for example! ;) please make it happen! ;P love your reactions
At the time Dr. Dre was going through depression due to losing his son Andre. He had gone on a hiatus from making music due to this.,
Dre had just lost his son. And Eminem helped him a lot through that depression so Dre put em on it❤️
