I was always pretty disappointed by the reception Chrono Cross received at its launch. People didn't like how different it was from Chrono Trigger, but it's such a fantastic, beautiful game and its soundtrack is just timeless in its quality.

the thing is, this was never meant to be a sequel or connected in any way to Chrono Trigger. I believe they change it at the very last moment and made the connection (thus had to change a lot of the premise and story).
Its the usual case, where the creator wanted to make a new thing but the big boss was like : "you know what, why not make this a continuation to that popular series you made before?".
Similar case can be said to Xenogears, where it was meant to be the FF7 before it was rejected by Squaresoft because it is "so not final fantasy" and was treated as a side project.

@@HenSt-gz7qj No, it was always meant to be a sequel to Chrono Trigger. Masato Kato wasn't happy with Radical Dreamers because of its rushed development and Chrono Cross was built from the ground up to be the sequel he ACTUALLY wanted.

I just love Chrono Cross. The production is so thorough.
Mitsuda-san did work on CT but took the charge of head composer in CC because, from what I've heard, Uematsu-san was too busy with other productions. But since the team was almost exactly the same, they did know how to synergice their work. The fact that the intro starts with suspended chords actually does foreshadow how the plot isn't exactly written on stone.
Mitsuda-san really showed how much he loved music. He has studied music from different continents and ages, and it shows. He absolutely loves rock and metal, but also folk music from all around the world.
He had a studio set up so he could play some instruments and record and adapt the quality so it could fit into the format of the era! He didn't abuse the use of Virtual Instruments, and it shows!
It would have been great if you analyzed the music along with the video. It really fits musically, visually and narratively.

It would've been amazing/better if you had watched the intro instead of just listening to the music, just because of how beautiful it is. But I know the focus was the music itself, so yeah.
And yes! The abrupt end of the song does get immediately followed up with another song, the title theme called "Garden of Gods", which is very calm and soft, easing you into the game much like how you described at the end!
It's incredible to see how much you can interpret with just one song, dude! It just shows how much you understand about music, and how Yasunori Mitsuda is an amazing composer!

Yasunori Mitsuda at his peak and best moments after overworking himself in chrono trigger and feeling more free to experiment?
Probably. He is literally doing whatever he wants at this point. He is a genius so no wonder this is insanely good. Whole ost is great to be honest.
That decade was literally the golden era of gaming soundtracks.

    • @kobarsos82
      @kobarsos82 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@thehumanpractice2985 Yes Uematsu was eyeing the project from afar, but also no, Mitsuda had a full say in this project due to other reasons. Check wikipedia or other sources.
Mitsuda wanted to distinguish himself at that point in his life, and increase his pay, and he wanted Chrono trigger just for himself to prove his worth so he gave the company an ultimatum. Let him compose the ost or simply bye bye. It was his demand otherwise he would leave. They gave him the project, and told him that maybe if he finishes it he will get a better salary. And allowed him to make majority of songs by a landslide on CT, it was literally his project. And he did it amazingly well, even though he had insane mishaps like losing a huge amount of tracks made, due to a hardware drive failure. He ended up in hospital from the overtime and work he put into it, because he was a perfectionist and wanted to make it absolutely perfect (54 of his tracks made it to final release). Thats when Uematsu was called to finish the soundtrack with the later part of the tracks (10 of them) so they could release the game. A real odyssey of a project.

It's the theme of a level set starting from a cathedral and ending in the crypts through lots of library areas, it's not a particularly significant or infamous level at all but I think the track really reflects the hallowed grounds housing sacred relics beautifully.

I would describe sus chords as kind of: "airy" (is that even a word), timeless and full of possibility.
At least when used in this way.
You could do a classic sus4->sus2->major 3rd movement, and that definitely has a huge feeling of resolution.
But that's not how they are used here.
You are absolutely right that this has the progressive rock/metal vibe to it (with different instruments)
and to me that 9th that you are mentioning are not really adding melancholy or sadness to me.
It adds the feeling of something desolate. Like a wasteland, or a ghost town in the desert.

Did not really enjoy the moments where you seem not to know what you're saying, like "it's the minor thing" and "this e minor 9 something - i dont know"... Would have prefered if you had taken the time to make sense of the notes. You seem to be hearing them right, but there is a lack in communicating the musical meaning IMHO.

Chrono Cross... Terrible Sequel to Chrono Trigger...
But a fantastic game on its own terms.
