1st August 2024 - Torrential storms around Leicestershire

  • A hot, humid airmass was expected to destabilise as high pressure retreated to the east and a trough moved in from the west. A cap was in place, which would surpress convection, but areas of wind convergence would allow the cap to be broken in parts, more especially across the Midlands, the Central South and into the South East. With a highly moist, unstable airmass inplace there was a risk of very heavy rainfall with a risk of flooding along with gusty winds and hail.

      Thank you 🙂. I did see a storm over Warwickshire on the radar at the same time as the Leicester storm. I had to pick Leicester or Warwick. I chose Leicester just because its closer to my home.

    We had a fantastic storm near didcot ( Oxfordshire) around 3pm! Had constant rumbles for around 2 hours, roads flooded, large hail and very strong wind gusts 🌪️😍

      Some of the storms in Oxfordshire were very strong. But I was unable to get into the best of them or get a good view. Glad you got a good one 🙂⚡️

    Really interesting to see the volume of rainfall at Fosse Park last Thursday, I live at the edge of Braunstone Town, c1.5 miles as the crow flies from there and there was no more than a “normal” sprinkling of rain here the whole evening. And yet a few hundred metres away on the dual carriageway there were lakes formed at the bottom of slip roads. Amazing how localised these storms can be

    Luckily you turned off the A6 at Oadby, if you had continued towards Great Glen and Kibworth you would off seen flooding, the core of those storm cells passed to the southeast of Leicester.
    As usual with Market Harborough we missed the worst of those storms by a few miles north of the town, but saw plenty of lightning and heard plenty of thunder, great video and never knew Leicester had it so bad until watching you'r video. 👍

    • @supacellstormchasing
      @supacellstormchasing  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for that. The storms did pulse up around the Southern part of Leicester but they were so slow moving that by the time they got to the north they had died out somewhat. Result was a localised very heavy rainstorm.

      knighton an wigston was horrendous the water was coming up through tarmac and was over ankle deep at one point you couldn't see where you were going ....so many cars stalled going through the floods

    • @supacellstormchasing
      @supacellstormchasing  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you. And definitely not. There are a number of storm chasers in the UK and some in Europe too. It's much less known about in the UK though. And of course we don't get the huge tornadoes like in the USA.

      Thank you 🙂. And I agree, a quiet season so far for all of the UK, although May wasn't bad overall. Hopefully August and September can deliver for those who want it.

    In my opinion it's been kind of slow for thunderstorms this year in Leicester, last year there were plenty of thunderstorms in Leicester, this time around there has only been 5 so far but this particular one has been the best one for Leicester so far with a close second being the one back at June 25th (Saturday) where there was loud thunder and CG lightning

    • @supacellstormchasing
      @supacellstormchasing  หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's been a slow start for everywhere this year. Where I live there has been just one small thunderstorm so far this year. I'm glad I was in Leicester to see this one 🙂

      Haven't had a good thunderstorm over belfast since the big mother ship storm back in 2001.Never seen a storm with lightning like that here since .Kinda makes sense as we don't get the hot temps like the southeast of the uk .

    I like the sound of the rain starting at 16:20 It almost sounds musical ! Was that abit of hail too?

    • @supacellstormchasing
      @supacellstormchasing  หลายเดือนก่อน

      There wasn't any hail. I have a little plastic cover for the camera and it was the sound of the rain hitting that.

      The storms being very slow moving meant that it was a classic case of one place gets a deluge but a mile down the road may see nothing.

      @@supacellstormchasingI know Winchester had a bad storm but in Southampton the cricket was on southern brave vs Manchester originals and there was not a spot of rain

    • @supacellstormchasing
      @supacellstormchasing  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I saw Winchester got hammered with quite a bit of flooding as a result. They were very localised storms though, and weren't moving much, so places stayed dry a mile or two away from places that got deluged.
