Supacell Storm Chasing
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 9 ก.ย. 2017
A channel dedicated to the best of my storm chasing videos from around the UK. I have been an avid fan of weather since an early age and began chasing storms back in 2004. Since then I have recorded over 100 hours of weather footage, of which my most recent and best pieces are showcased here. Some of this footage has appeared on TV programmes such as Britain's Wildest Weather. My older videos can be found elsewhere on TH-cam, this channel is for videos from 2015 onwards. Please do not reuse any footage from this channel without prior permission.
21st September 2024 Part 2 - Storm over Belper
After storm chasing through the Derbyshire Peak District I became aware of further storms moving northwestwards towards my home town of Belper. I decided to race back in time to catch it.
It was quite a rarity for me to watch a storm from home, I am normally out and about. Storms also rarely come over my home, this time it did. Enjoy.

21st September 2024 Part 1 - Derby and Peak District Storm
มุมมอง 3.1Kหลายเดือนก่อน
An area of low pressure was moving north across Western France drawing a warm, humid airmass northwards. Surface heating of this airmass was to create instability. Lines of thunderstorms were expected to develop along wind convergence zones and transfer gradually northwards. The Midlands into Wales looked to be in the highest risk, including my local area of Derbyshire.

An upper cold pool had moved across southern parts of the UK over the previous night. Surface heating of a warm and humid airmass was expected to readily build thunderstorms, likely becoming widespread across areas to the west of London eastwards. With CAPE of over 1000 j/kg, very steep lapse rates and some deep layer shear there was a risk of severe thunderstorms bringing hail, frequent lightn...

A cut-off upper low had been sat around the Bay of Biscay for a couple of days bringing rain and some thunderstorms to the south of England and Wales. On the evening and night of the 7th/8th the low was moving into the south of England. Colder air moving in on top of a warm, humid airmass that was in place was set to lead to thunderstorms breaking out in the southeast during the night and pushi...
1st August 2024 - Torrential storms around Leicestershire
มุมมอง 15K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
A hot, humid airmass was expected to destabilise as high pressure retreated to the east and a trough moved in from the west. A cap was in place, which would surpress convection, but areas of wind convergence would allow the cap to be broken in parts, more especially across the Midlands, the Central South and into the South East. With a highly moist, unstable airmass inplace there was a risk of ...
18th June 2024 - Severe Storm near Bordeaux
มุมมอง 1.3K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Following severe thunderstorms across a swathe of Northern Europe a new batch of storms were expected to develop across the Bay of Biscay and move into Southwest France. Places around Bordeaux looked likely to be hit and so I placed myself just a short distance east of the city.

มุมมอง 1.2K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
A severe thunderstorm outbreak was set to take place across France. Southwest France looked likely to be hit first before storms would then spread across Central and Eastern France and eventually into other parts of Europe. Large hail, severe winds and heavy rain were all a risk by the evening and night. Rather than going out chasing the storms I stayed in the town of Saintes, right in the path...

Cooler air arriving above a moist airmass at the surface was set to create instability and promote heavy showers and thunderstorms to develop across England with the greatest risk transferring north and east through the day. The highest risk of storms looked to be across eastern parts with sea breeze convergence just inland from the east coast. Although storms were likely to be short-lived in m...

A trough moving in from the east along was to promote heavy showers and thunderstorms along wind convergence zones. The most likely area for storms was across southern and western England along with Mid and South Wales. Storms were expected to be pulse type storms and so were likely to have a short life span, which makes chasing them harder. Even so I headed towards the Welsh Borders to chase w...

A very warm, moist plume was being drawn northwestwards into the UK from the near continent and overriding cooler more stable air already in place at the surface. Cool air from the Atlantic was then overriding the plume. The combination of this was set to destabilise the air and produce some active elevated thunderstorms through the early hours with the likelihood of frequent lightning.

A very humid, warm plume of air was being drawn over southern parts of the UK courtesy of a trough over Biscay. The plume was set to destabilise over the weekend with storms becoming more widespread. Intense thunderstorms had affected France through the day and these storms...

I had gone to East Yorkshire to chase storms but it soon became apparent that the best storms were going to stay to my south. Me and my friends stayed up till 3am to watch this storm in west London i caught a fantastic lighting om my camera that night
i live east of london near romford and we never see rain like this or any of your other videos. heavy rain lasts about 5 mins. you get more in cental london than you do here. even thunder storms by pass usm had about 3 in 5 yrs
@suevosloo2008 It's the same where I have lived for the past 7 years. Over that time there has hardly been any overhead storms. That changed on 21st Sept this year, with a rare overhead storm and flooding.
Amazing footage ❤
Thank you 🙂
this storm complex was insane here in solihull
Watched this from Texas, nice video. It's good to watch a calm chaser, ours over here tend to get too excited and loud. BTW, my husband is from Sittingbourne, Kent.
Haha, I know what you mean. Obviously Texas gets far bigger storms than the UK, I would love to chase there. But often the videos I see from the US are overshadowed by crazy shouting (although I can understand the excitement). I bet your husband doesn't miss the UK's rather mundane weather 😁
@@supacellstormchasing He doesn't miss it, but doesn't like the summer months- too hot! Take care and stay safe!
Hello mate..Well done on this video as always interested in storms..I can't stand thunder and lightening at night..Hate it...Are you local chap as you did well on this as the area you are in is my county..
Thank you. I'm not local, I live about 70-80 miles away in Derbyshire.
@supacellstormchasing WOW.What a trip for you...Thankyou for video and you have a safe stormchasing trip and I will be watching out for more on your channel...Cheers mate..
Beautiful scenery rainbows.thanks
Thank you. I was lucky this day, a rare combination of lightning, rainbow and scenery.
I was caught up in this attempting to travel by train from London to Matlock then onto Bakewell. My train got held up due to lightning knocking out the signals then when we got to Burton-on-Trent we were advised to transfer to a bus. This was around 7:30pm and the storm picked up intensity as I travelled onwards by bus via Derby to Bakewell.
Interesting to hear of your experience, but sorry for the disruption. This would have been the area of storms that I was under in my 21st September part 2 video.
@@supacellstormchasingYes, I found that video just after I commented on this one 🙂
😊another very enjoyable video my freind. Hopefully many more. 👍👍👌🏻👌🏻👀👀
Thank you. Many more to come. Unsure if there will be anything this year now, but if there are storms I'll be out there 🙂⚡️
Lucky for you I never i hear thunder from a distance but it dies out when it gets to me 😢😢
It is normally the same for me at home. This was a rarity. If I didn't storm chase I'd hardly see any. Your time will come though I hope 🤞⚡️
,😨😨😨😨👍👍👍👍🌧️🌧️🌧️🌧️⚡⚡⚡⚡☔☔☔ love it
Thank you ⚡️⚡️
Looking forward to this mate. 👍
Hope you enjoy it ⚡️
Really enjoying these videos, but do you have a mike? It's very hard to hear what you're saying over the noise of the rain
True, I am somewhat drowned out. I don't have a mic I'm afraid. Although I'm looking at getting new recording equipment for next year's season, so I mic would be a good buy I think.
I chased the storm passing eastern Stoke-on-Trent. That produced a few positive strikes. Caught up with it at Werrington before weekening with the odd flash. It was frequent lightning when i got to it but started to get less. A house in Longton was hit by lightning directly on the TV aerial causing severe damage.
There were some big CG lightning bolts I saw on the chase, unfortunately if they hit something then the something doesn't stand a chance. Glad you got to do a chase too 👍⚡️
Jeez I wouldn’t want your fuel bill unless you have a hybrid car. I used to be terrified of storms but we lived in Cyprus for 3 years and I soon changed into loving them.
Luckily I do have a hybrid car, so fuel is relatively cheap. I used to spend a lot on fuel though before then. I bet there are some food storms in Cyprus, I'd imagine most likely Autumn into Winter time (not summer).
@@supacellstormchasing we lived up on the Nicosia plains so we got better of both worlds. The storms would start out at sea then come round the mountains it was a regular occurrence to get 2 storms at same time meet overhead. That was where I got my love for lightning. It would be mid autumn when they would start. The worse we had was Christmas 97 the storm started mid afternoon and was still going in the early hours.
Sounds amazing. I'm getting tempted to head to Cyprus at soke point over the winter now.
@@supacellstormchasing if you do Ayia Napa is a good area for the coastal storms, you get them coming from the Famagusta Bay Area they then loop round to hit the mountains. You could get storms coming from both ways. We used to get the same storm as it was passing back through from the mountain areas. I imagine Paphos end of the island will be an impressive are too. You have the bay and the Troodos mountains, you even get snow atop of the Troodos. Probably the only place we lived during my husbands career that we cried when we left. Many many memories.
@debbiewilliams3363 Thank you for that, some good pointers. I imagine it was quite sad leaving such a beautiful place.
I rotating clouds in Gloucestershire it was immense the inflow was fantastic
And with the constant thunder It was quite atmospheric to be under
Another brilliant video we didn't get any of them storms where I live in rotherham south yorkshire we missed out again keep up the great work I enjoy your vids 😊
Thank you. Your chance will come ⚡️⚡️
I loved watching this. I bet the lightning and torrential rain were pretty impressive on radar!
It did look intense on the radar. I don't think I ever got into the very heaviest part where I believe there was quite a bit of hail falling.
It certainly was a deluge! Difficult to drive through @@supacellstormchasing
Enjoyed watching this video my friend hopefully more to come before the season's through. 👍👍🤝👌🏻👌🏻👀
Thank you. Latest I have storm chased is October 23rd so fingers crossed I get at least one or two more chases in 🤞
That would be Oct 23rd 2022, remember it well. A big storm unexpectedly late in the season.
@CherylFrancis-fn1uf Yes, that was the one. I didn't do so well with it though. I went too far east and missed it.
Stormy
Another very entertaining video from supercell keep up the good work
Thank you 🙂
The part with you in slow traffic in the pouring rain on the M5 brought about some flashbacks of my time on that motorway on the day of the huge rainstorm of 20th July 2007!
I remember that day. Some awful conditions around the SW Midlands.
I remember this storm as it moved up to Yorkshire overnight. Great to watch the lightning in the night sky!
I've never seen so much flash flooding! Always unnerving to drive through! Thanks for this chase. Amazing to watch, as ever
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it 🙂. The flooding was pretty bad. Similar conditions occurred near where I live the following evening.
Cirencester storm sounds elevated to me. Would have made an amazing nighttime show.
It was, a lot of the storms were elevated. The one near Tewkesbury that had constant thunder would have been like strobe lightning if at night ⚡️
get use to it. its going to be the norm now
Thunderstorm frequency has actually reduced in the last 30 years, not increased. Rainfall and flooding has increased though.
Wow great video 😊
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed 🙂
46:44 U litrrally zoomed away from a developing funnel cloud :( U can see it condencing
It didn't produce a funnel. I still had my eyes on it whilst the camera was recording the opposite way. If It had produced I'd have swung back round.
@@supacellstormchasing I thought I saw a whisp just before it panned away
Wellingborough had a fantastic thunderstorm Saturday afternoon and again Sunday evening ⚡️🌩⛈️
I saw that Northamptonshire had more storms on Sunday. A great weekend for storms.
@supacellstormchasing yesss sir it's the best 👌 all over glad you had a great time filming mother nature at her truly best ✨️
Great chase! Bye-bye sumner, glad you came, see you next year !
Thank you. I will miss summer!
I must admit l live near stratford upon Avon and we completely missed this current round of storms they seemed to have split to the west and east of this area.😫
Sorry to hear that. It's pot luck with storms, and it's rarely evenly spread.
Tracking a significant storm from South-East to West-North-West in the UK. There's a novelty ! I expect we will see a lot more of these. The continent has been having this type of weather for a lot longer than UK.
The continent will always get better storms than the UK. I love my occasional trips over there to see them.
Great video as always I didn't chase this weekend unfortunately but there as been some very lively storms all weekend. 👍
Thank you. It was definitely a very lively few days for storms.
Mmmm following in your American counterparts, an interesting concept. Air intakes on your motor are critical due to drowned engines in this weather with flooding. My Moto in life prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Have fun you did today all the best for the future.
Thank you 👍. UK doesn't have the storms like the US, but they can still be worth the chase. Happy my car survived.
@@supacellstormchasing Dr Reed Timmer and James Spann in the USA 🇺🇸 are a wealth of knowledge as you know in meteorology and climatology. In the uk 🇬🇧 The important thing is be professional at all times you never know who you are going to meet. This winter could kill a lot of people with the current situation in this country. Just look at the flooding in Bedfordshire and chaos on tonight’s news 23/9 / 24 in England. All the very best regards Nick
I am considering becoming a uk storm/ tornado chaser any sort of weather really all seasons and doing my own channel I am disabled so I think it would be great to pass the time instead of been at home all day I have the equipment to do it and videos like this really do inspire me
It's great if I can inspire people to take on storm chasing as a hobby. It can be disappointing, but it can also be very rewarding. I've had a lot of experience of both. Never give up though 👍
That's some pretty serious inflow at the 45:00 mark.
It was impressive to watch.
Insane inflow going into that thing, no wonder it was so active!
Good on you, the UK now needs storm and Tornado chasers, both for the public and weather forecasters, as climate change has brought a new kind of storm to the UK, we will see and feel more tornadoes and those matching , sadly, those not dissimilar to tornado ally in the USA, for those of you who do not think this will happen, I’ve already built an internal storm shelter, and to me that’s prudent, I would advise everyone else to do the same. Sadly all these new builds won’t stand a chance, with what’s headed our way in the next few years. There’s nothing more important, than doing all that we can to fight climate change individually. I thank this man for chasing this storm and I hope he continues, because we are going to need him ! Alaya uk
Thank you. And that's a job I would happily do 🙂. I may struggle building a storm shelter though, I live in a flat.
Great video with some lovely sounds of thunder! At 55:00 (and for a few minutes after) that spinning wall cloud was really trying hard to produce a funnel - it just didn't have enough ooomph. Your car did well in all that flooding.
Thank you. Interestingly the spinning wall cloud was reported as a tornado over Tewkesbury, although I don't see any evidence to prove that. My car did ok, although I did lose the front number plate in the flooding.
Great. Glad you ended up at my town. Fab storm.
Not sure where that is, but it was a fab storm 🙂
Bromyard.
I’ve looked into this a bit in the last day, and studying trends of lighting strikes for a few months. The storms follow the m42/ a511. Can’t confirm that its topography, but as someone who knows nothing about it it feels like it
There is definitely a trend for some areas to be prone to storms and others to miss, and I would concur it may be to do with topography. Where I live in Belper we tend to miss out, I believe because of the Peak District to the north and west. The exception is on the rare occasions that storms move in from the east, then they hit Belper (as they did on the 21st).
This was such a long lasting group of cells, not seen that for a long time.
They were. The atmosphere was just right for once.
You had a busy day 👍👌
I did. The next day was just as busy (although a little closer to my home). Video is coming soon. 🌩
