  • Today we're making Portal bookends that lights up!
    Patreon: / nerdforge
    PARTS USED:
    - EL wire: bit.ly/led-wire
    - Battery packs for EL wire: bit.ly/battery-...
    - Reflective mirror film: bit.ly/mirror-film
    - 5 mm plywood sheet
    - Acrylic glass
    - Pine wood plank
    - Wood stain
    TOOLS:
    - Scroll saw / coping saw
    - Squeegee
    - X-acto knife
    - Hot glue
    - Chisel
    - Drill
I've always loved the Portal games, and I really wanted to make a couple of wooden DIY bookends with EL wire light / neon wire wrapped around them, so that they glow in the dark!

I like how you shown both manual and electric tools in this video and addressed the concern of not having access to electric equipment.
This shows people that you don't need expensive tools to make stuff but also shows them that investing in your equipment only benefits themselves.
We all start small and work our way up. It's a journey just as fun as the end product is most cases :D
Thank you for the video ^^

You deserve way more subscribers than 5 minute crafts (23 million)! Amazing editing and no clickbait, and your ideas are original and not stolen (which is rare nowadays)! You’ve earned a subscriber!

So true but sadly with youtube's algorithm right now. They prefer quantity over quality so to grow they would have to produce more videos.

Great job :) I would maybe also add slip-resistant duds underneath the bottom of the bookend, so that it stands firmly in case people use large and heavy books

This channel is not only Martina but Hansi as well, and calling her a "chick" sounds really disrespectful to me. Also, I'm from the future and now they have 3.27M subscribers, which is very cool to look back and see that they gained 3M subscribers in 5 years.

Not the cleanest I've seen, maybe some sanding would have helped to take out the rough edges of the portals, but anyway, the final product was awesome.

Ah the coping saw I remember once it got stuck in a piece of wood and a piece broke of and nearly took out my eye when I tried to pull it out, good times.

If you use multiple layers of thin wood you can entirely hide wires rather than embedding them in the surface as you did for the el-wire. Kind of like what you did with the battery pack but with a wooden surface on the bottom enclosing it. You can also save wood by cutting long thin wall sections and constructing a frame, rather than cutting the middle out of a board.
Sanding the portals would also help with their look.
However it was a fun build with a nice outcome!

One advantage of a coping saw is that you drill a hole in your interior empty space, run the saw blade through the hole, and then saw out your interior empty space without having to cut into it from the outside.

so one pointer with wood working, paint your glue on and cover the entire surface of what you are working with, wood glue is extremely strong but it is much stronger with uniformity. using strips creates stress points and more points of possible failure. youll fine your wood working projects lasting much longer and failing less from those points long term
