Rush - Force Ten bass cover (R30)

  • Next up I decided to do Force Ten playing along to the R30 live version (the version which seemed to be easiest to isolate the bass since the Wal stuff has so much top end and barely gets touched by the software!). I'm quickly running out of ones from this era which I can do covers of without more synths in my setup, but this one is a really bass-centric song. The synth parts are mainly just samples that they trigger with pedals rather than actual synth playing so leaving them out felt acceptable to me.
    I remember having a lot of difficulty with the main riff in this song in my early days of learning Rush songs. Getting the index finger hits up to speed makes it a lot easier to play the chords in between (it looks to me like Geddy does it all with his first finger, but I use my 2nd finger to hit the chords then fall back to the first finger for the open string notes) but I'm glad I persevered because I am now quite comfortable playing a lot of fast parts with just my first finger which can make things nice and simple for my brain :)
    I'll do a few more from Grace Under Pressure - Hold Your Fire where the synths are less important (Grand Designs, Kid Gloves, for example) soon, and hopefully after that I will have some more gear which will allow me to really get stuck in to covers from those albums.
    Hope you enjoy and as always, thanks for watching and thanks to all you who have subscribed!
    Gear Used:
    Fender Jazz bass (Geddy Signature) with Rotosound Swingbass66 strings
    Tech 21 Ged-2112 Sansamp
    Trace Elliot GP12X
    Palmer PDI-05

    Man alive bro.... yeah, I never had this song on my "must see bass lines list" but watching you play it reminds of the tenacity and focus needed to play Tom Sawyer on the drums. Opened my eyes a bit to a bass line I took for granted a bit for sure. Enlightening and beautifully technical and percussive as always, thanks for another great cover and video!

    Dang... ridiculously awesome accuracy, bro. I always thought the bass on this song needed to be cranked up over the synth. It changes the song to hear it like this. 👍 To add, some live shows had Geddy's bass so loud it lost the mixing sweet spot.

    Rare to see anyone do covers of the R30 show which is an unfortunate as it's one of my favourites. Hoping to see more from it in the future! Could you do Earthshine (R30 Live) at some point?

    • @hemibass
      @hemibass  ปีที่แล้ว

      I will probably use r30 quite a bit more because of how well I can remove the bass from the mix. It was a great setlist too lots of ones I play a lot. I've never learned earthshine before but am happy to give it a go after a couple of other vapor trails songs. Thanks for the suggestion!

    You pluck the intro the way i do it, with 2 fingers. Geddy plucks that entire intro with his index finger. Idk why but he seemed to like to do some things the harder way. There is absolutely no reason to do it with 1 finger, but he does.

    • @hemibass
      @hemibass  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah for a long time I did it with one finger like he does, but I ended up just preferring it with 2 fingers. I'm not sure why he does it that way. He also does Turn the Page with his thumb for the open strings on the Show Of Hands era footage, which I also found uncomfortable. Thanks for watching

      Thanks for watching. I'm going to do a 'rig rundown' type video if I get to 1000 subscribers so I'll go through it in detail if/when that happens. • @hemibass

    That opening riff is so much fun to play! Excellent work.
    How do you go about isolating/muting the original bass track in these songs? I've tried to do it in the past but never got very far.

    • @hemibass
      @hemibass  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I use moises. It's a software that lets you isolate the parts (to an extent). It's very good with some of the more 'bassy' Rush albums (like the modern stuff for example) but all the punchy top end on the Wal era ends up on the guitar track instead of the bass track. I would recommend it though

    How are you getting that "R30-ish" Geddy tone out of your bass? I can't figure it out at all

    • @hemibass
      @hemibass  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not really sure tbh haha. I pretty much always go for a different stages sound on my jazz. Geddys r30 tone is bit duller than what I normally do but as my strings get a bit older the pop becomes less pronounced (which I like to an extent) so it could be the strings being a couple of weeks old on this one?
