Korg Krome 88 key workstation: No place like Krome

  • One of my best videos, I think :)
The Krome 88 is unusual in two ways: Firstly, it has the lightest weighted keys I've ever played - an unusual and pleasant feeling! Secondly, it has a grand-looking touch screen but the operating system is unpretentious, practical and easy to follow.
And the sound: Classic high-end Korg, but again it's not overcooked or self-congratulating.

Really if you want a great rompler, Korg krome is the way to go, very flexible sounds

We have the 61 version and it still weighs a ton! Claire likes to use it for occasionally for leads in our songs. This synth is kinda a "me and Krome all alone" late night ambient session type of synth to me. Dark days of fall and winter are coming, so I may do a solo bit on it myself.

Nice, yeah it's a real joy just to lay and explore. Extra note about the weight - the 61 key version is heavier than average I believe but the 88 key version is much lighter than any other 88 that I've lifted. I did a clip about that but it seems I forgot to include it in my final edit. happy with the video apart from that, but I missed an important detail there!

@@gearfacts Well the 88 may be lighter to you, but it's twice as heavy as the 61 @ around 15 lbs. The Kronos is like 8 lbs heavier than the 88 Krome. No worry, I'm just kinda small and it feels like moving a refrigerator when I set it up.

@@dawnr8511 Yeah it's just strange that the 61 is heavier than expected, but the 88 is lighter than expected. If I was a touring kind of guy I'd be really pleased about that. I'm watching a Roland RD64 atm, it's the lightest weighted action keyboard around apparently. Should be interesting :)

Turn off the animations in the settings to make the screen more responsive 👍

The Krome EX has since been released but other than a newer piano and electronic dance samples, it's more or less the same instrument as the original Krome. Of interest is that the Krome has a dedicated piano roll editor and cuelist function in its sequencer, 2 important features that are sadly omitted in the much more expensive Kronos and Nautilus sequencers.

Definitely something worth remembering for people in the market. Thanks MN :)

@@gearfacts my pleasure buddy. It's sad when manufacturers actually downgrade their newer products by excluding excellent features from their previous products. Korg isn't the only company that's guilty of this behaviour.

The Krome was released in 2012 - so 10 years old - and still a current product sold by Korg as of 2022. I agree this is more of a "live" keyboard or a secondary keyboard in a studio setting. It lacks a sampler, and you cannot record audio to WAV files, making it not an all-in-one workstation IMO. Strangely, the lower cost Kross has a sampler and can record audio to WAV files (but no touchscreen). The Krome sounds good though, and it has the controls and effects you need to personalize your performance and just have fun playing it (e.g. @10:43).

I found the keys to be quite slow, not great of high articulation for skilled keyboardists, but they do feel good
I’ve had mine since 2015, it’s held up well; but the glue under the keys are beginning to seperate now, and creating a little concern about how much life it has left on it. But nothings given out.
Heavily shredded upon for many years.
Though- I had a wretched recall pcm chip in my brand new model that was a serious issue trying to find a repair specialist

How are the guitar and does it have a strumming effect for that "James Brown" sound
