Getting the right tools is not the difficult part. The difficult part is learning the discipline it takes to create on a consistent basis. Your problem is not that you don’t have the right tools, that’s an excuse. Your problem is that you’re not driven enough to find that discipline. Start with what you have, learn the discipline, then worry about the tools later.

    i know absolutely no one cares about my thoughts but here are a 17 year old's 2 cents:
    the Christian battle against resisting temptation isn't won by how close we can get to the fire without getting burnt. It's won by how far we can get from the fire to avoid getting burnt.
    Thanks for this video Jon finally a non fence riding answer! good stuff bro

      KyleNoelMusic I agree, it's always hard to overcome temptation by putting yourself in those situations. But if you are a person who doesn't get addicted to anything easily, there might not be a temptation. Personally I'm not going to drink because I don't know if I would be able to handle it so why take the risk.

      That was a lovely statement, but perhaps that is all it was. An honest reading of the Bible, I mean anyone who’s really looking truth, will discover that alcohol is fine, even encouraged in moderation. However there are plenty of warnings about being a drunkard (alcoholic).
      Beware of religions that teach their dogma with no regard for the Bible. So many “Christians” have religion but wouldn’t know the scripture, outside of their churches recommended reading, if it slapped them in face.
      Read your Bible!
      Read your Bible!
      Let me guess, church says you can only read the KJV? Where did they get that from? They don’t know.
      Read your Bible!
      Annnnnnd... I’m spent.

      Vapenation vaper no no no, he died so he can send his Holy Spirit to be that POWER to keep you from your sin nature. Just cos Jesus grace is sufficient doesn't mean keep sinning. You keep sinning and all you'll do is separate yourself from a perfect and holy God

    • @FlyinDagga
      @FlyinDagga 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Your mindset is the same as the Galations. You should read that letter, for they, too, took advantage of the grace of God and thought they could justify acting in sin because they were saved.
      As "kel haden" said, all you'll do is separate yourself from God with that thinking - there is little tolerance from the Holy Spirit toward those who distort His grace to a license to sin.

    The Bible isn't black or white on some subjects and this means people have to read the Bible and pray to find out what God is saying to them. Sadly alot of people don't bother building a relationship with God and would rather be told what laws to try and keep, instead of trying to have a meaningful relationship with God.

    Everyone has there own opinion if they want to drink or not, but people shouldn’t be judging other people that do. Theres nothing wrong with drinking if your not abusing it. People want to talk about sin, well all sin is on the same level, and we all sin no matter how perfect we think we are. Nice video

    This was a really good video explaining all the different ways of looking at it and issues. Great job on it! I personally have made a promise to myself to never touch any kind of alcoholic drink and think it's probably the wisest choice for most people in this county because almost all the time anyone drinks in the USA its to get drunk. In some other countries they use wine in small amounts for their health and stuff like that but I feel like in America that's very rarely the case. So I think for most people they shouldn't but I understand they aren't sinning if they do as long as they don't get dunk. Just seems wiser in my eyes to go ahead and avoid it. Anyways great video, thanks for sharing :)

      breezecowgirl the heart benefits of drinking alcohol are exaggerated and are only marginal. Regularly moderate drinking has a detrimental effect on the liver. Drinking in moderation isn't safe because it lowers your inhibitions and also both light to moderate drinking has been linked to cancer risk www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3142348/NHS-slash-safe-drinking-limits-new-evidence-reveals-alcohol-linked-certain-cancers-including-breast-bowel.html

      I think problem with church is that it thinks more about fun than it does about peoples health let alone their own, they keep talking about freedom in Christ, when peoples health is clearly more important. According to expensive studies conducted in Italy on the resveratrol in wine and they found the heart benefits did not come from the resveratrol in wine. This makes sense seeing as alcohol like caffeine in coffee inhibits the body's ability to process nutrients.

    This is awesome! It's also important to remember that wine was one of the most common drinks in Bible times because it was fermented. Even most water at the time was unsafe to drink because it couldn't be purified. Just a thought
    Although I have made the choice to abstain from alcohol, I have had to learn to be OK with being around friends that drink in moderation. It used to make me uncomfortable, but I have learned that as long as they know they limit, there's nothing wrong with it

    I look at it this way: Who here is married or has a girlfriend? Would you be comfortable if I kissed your girl's cheek and showered her with romantic compliments? Followed by a slow kiss on the other cheek to make her blush? It's not like I'm gonna make a move on her sexually so what's the problem? There definitely is a problem: *You shouldn't desire to come close to a sin barrier even if you don't actually sin.* Alcohol consumption isn't any different: "I wanna drink alcohol tonight but I'm not gonna get drunk so what's the problem!" Well why do you desire to be like those who drink in the first place? I guarantee you the Holy Spirit won't ever prompt you to go to a bar and grab a beer or some wine with your bros that drink.

      Though I respect your opinion, I believe it's blind logic. If I used your same logic on any other sin, it would easily fall short and become an impossible lifestyle. The sin of pornography is the number one sin among Christian males, so by you being on the internet, your desire to come close to that sin, with the countless number of ads displayed showing sexually explicit looking women and even here on TH-cam with it's videos showing thumbnails of women dressed in a sexual manner. Your logic turns into hypocrisy instead of guidance. By your logic, stay off the internet, don't even turn on your TV, and if we're following your logic then don't go to a mall and definitely stay away from the beach because any of those can bring you closer to the number fall among men in the church today. Doing any of those things could bring you to lust and/or commit adultery and so you shouldn't desire to come close to that barrier. You have to see how that simply wouldn't work unless you went full Amish. You must know and remain aware of what's going to cause you temptation and bring yourself into sin but it's never wise to stretch God's word and create sin where there's none. That my brother is where legalism starts and Christians look more like the Pharisees than imitators of God... Have a blessed day...

      Using your logic, then we must also ban music, sex, guns, and all sorts of things. Guns, as any liberal will tell you, leads to shooting people up and killing them. Murder is a terrible sin, so let's get rid of guns, right? Rock music has been scientifically shown to arouse sexual excitement in people, and affect their brain function, and it is not just the lyrics, it is the music, so we must also ban Christian rock and roll (and I did a dissertation on this, so I know what I'm talking about), as music obviously leads to the sin of fornication, so that's got to go. And sex, well, even if you are doing it in a respectful way within marriage, getting that close to something which is used by so many for the sins of fornication and adultery and other sexual perversions, not to mention pornography, will obviously lead you to adultery or fornication too, so no Christian should be having sex, inside of marriage either, as walking that close to a sin barrier might lead you to cross over, right? Alcohol and drinking it is NOT getting close to a sin barrier. Alcohol is an amoral object. What the sins are are idolatry (alcoholism when it becomes the god that controls you) or gluttony (drinking too much and becoming drunk). What needs to be taught is respect for it, as a blessing from God and representation of Christ's blood shed for us, and self-control. But instead of teaching and preaching that, you anti-wine folks preach against the object, which is not sinful in and of itself any more than a gun is. You have replaced God's ways with your own laws and traditions, putting yourself on a higher moral ground than God. He wants us to learn self-control. Just as the Pharisees made their own laws to make sure the people couldn't come close to sinning, as obviously people cannot be trusted to make their own decisions and control themselves (and Christ had a lot of not nice names for them as a result), so do so many Christians today do the same thing. It is not your job to be the Holy Spirit for someone else and be their conscience. If you see them getting drunk, then you have the right to speak to them. Otherwise, do not judge their freedom. Obviously just as the Pharisees declared Jesus a drunkard and glutton, He would apparently be just as unwelcome in your house and church. Think about how God feels when you tell him that what He calls a gift, a blessing, and the symbol of His shed blood is an abomination to you. Something you view with contempt. Have you ever considered how your position is not pleasing to Him, because it is telling Him to take His gift and stick it where the sun doesn't shine? It is fine to be a teetotaler if that is your choice, and it is fine to be against the actual sins, but just partaking of alcohol is not a sin. God even tells them to take their TITHE money and go buy wine and strong drink for celebrating in Deut. 14. Doesn't seem like God has as big a problem with it as you do. Also, if you are going to be consistent, then you had better give up sex.

      Exactly! I have a major problem with Christians who drink. Because they want to get close enough to sin without actually sinning!

      @John Policano
      actually your example is flawed. The examples you suggested were all involuntary. He never went out out of his way to go find half naked girls in bathing suits. They just showed up. A better example would be if he went to a porn site and look at clothed women in showy outfits. Therefore he is getting close enough to a women's body without actually seeing her naked.... just like drinking alcohol in "moderation".

    • @JP-zz9bn
      @JP-zz9bn 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I disagree Drax... It's not involuntary to know when you go to the beach, you will see half-naked women everywhere. To use the argument, they just showed up is an excuse, not an involuntary excuse. That's like saying I was at a friends house when someone just showed up with a case of beer. So it's not my fault I sinned since it was involuntary and just showed up and I drank the whole case.
      Matthew 5:27-28 27
      “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
      You say, "Because they want to get close enough to sin without actually sinning!" Basically, you're saying you have a problem with Christians for not sinning but because they're doing something YOU prefer them not do. They're not doing anything against God or being disobedient to his word, instead only against your belief and that starts to look like you're saying your ways are better than Gods. That, my brother, can become dangerous ground.
      Appreciate your reply though, I hope mine cleared it up better. It is hard getting thoughts complete typing it all out without it become a book.
      Have a blessed day...

    Love the way you explain it, how if you're with an alcoholic and you drink rather drink non alcoholic drinks when with them so as to not lead them to sin

    As the second Adam and the perfect sinless son of God, Jesus could not have turned water into an alcoholic beverage to offer such harmful substance to others. "Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbors, pouring it from the wineskin till they are drunk, so that he can gaze on their naked bodies!” Habakkuk 2:15
    This would be totally our of character for Christ to condone the use of mind-altering substances that destroy both the body and the mind, thus weakening our relationship with Him. “Don't you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
    "Wine produces mockers; beer leads to brawls. Those led astray by alcoholic drinks cannot be wise." Proverbs 20:1
    "Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." 1 Peter 5:8

    Hey Jon, I've been watching your videos for a while and I was wondering, what do you think of the doctor strange movie? Have you seen it or do you plan on seeing it? Just curious as to where your stance is on it. I haven't seen it yet and though I want to I'm not sure if it would be right since its based on magic.

    One thing to also consider with this, is the fact that back in the time of Jesus, there was a very limited amount of things they could even consume. The water was dirty, and I'm pretty sure they didn't have soda/pop there. However, I do appreciate what you said and enjoy your videos very much. Thank you for the encouragement and may God bless you.

    Getting drunk is a sin. Having a beer/wine or two is not. If you can abstain completely and live sober, that is best.. All these fleshly things compete with God for spaces in your heart. Same goes for cannabis.

    Isn't the wine in that story part of the larger story of John where the water is a motif meaning the holy spirit. And in that light could the warning about being drunk on wine also be a warning about drunkenness in the holy spirit? I'm thinking in terms of self righteousness. Is it possible to be too into the spirit??

    Hey Jon, some awesome points!
    3 questions if I may..
    Does it say that Jesus drank the wine He turned from water?
    You mentioned in Luke 22 that Jesus drank with His disciples..verse 16 and 18 say that He neither ate or drank so did Jesus drink ever wine?
    And Luke 22:18..does that mean there will be wine in heaven 👀?
    I'm not trying to disprove or discredit..genuine questions from a very opinionated topic..my greatest respects to your piece here!

      Just read Luke 7:34... "The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'”
      If Jesus was drinking non-alcoholic grape juice, then how in the world could the Pharisees accuse him of drunkenness. So clearly, we have an irrefutable, indisputable reference of Jesus drinking alcoholic wine.
      Yes, there will be wine in heaven. Isn’t that what Luke 22:18 says in plain english? Goodness! And yes, I’m sure God will give us wine in heaven, but we won’t have bodies that will react negatively as our earthly bodies can:
