- If you thought Austerfield was the only place that the Pilgrim Fathers story has connections to in this part of the world, well think again. There's quote a few of them around the South Yorkshire/Bassetlaw border area and today's parish is perhaps the one with the most history connected to the Mayflower's journey some 400 years ago.
That's because William Brewster, one of the separatists, lived here in the Manor House, which now is owned by the Dunstans, and is currently being restored to it's former glory. The Pilgrim tale is etched all over this village, from the information boards, to the names of the properties, to the apple tree that's been planted in the centre. You cannot escape it.
I do try though in this video to show that the village isn't all about the Pilgrim Fathers;. Take for example the watermill (Monks Mill), with it's lovely pond and attractive exterior, or the park and the village hall both of which have much bigger roles in the community than just informing passers by of the history.
In fact, if you go a little further afield within the parish boundaries you encounter some much more gruesome history with the story of John Spencer, and a nice woodland burial ground designed to make remembering our loved ones that little more manageable for the living.
All in all you're not going to escape the history like the separatists did, but there's a lot more to see in the parish of SCROOBY.

My name is Andy. I am armed with a car, a GoPro and an unhealthy amount of time on my hands.

In the 70's and 80's Scrooby was a mystical place , local farm was ran by "Jock the hind " . Even his collie's were magic as they set off at sunset on their own and came back with the cows from the fields for miliking as Jock and my dad would stand in the farm yard talking lol .( my dad was friends with Lady Galway of Selby estate that Scrooby fell under and we were the only ones allowed to fish her lands so we got around the area and knew everyone back then ) .
Mill pond was a trout hatchery in the 70's , when it rained the pond over flowed and the trout would escape into the ditches running to the river , my dad would goto war with the big pike as they fought for the trout . He would hook a trout and wind in half a fish lol .
Where the road crosses the river Ryton is where the golden sword was found one summer when the water level dropped to ankle depth , a good time to go collecting the fresh water muscles to eat .
Now the river runs red with sand from the quarry at Retford ,but in the 70's / 80's it ran crystal clear .
Just across the road where the burrial ground is now was RAF Bircotes airfield , During WW2 it housed fighters / bombers / training aircraft and was home to the Polish flight training school . Not massive but it had 3 runways , all over 4000ft . So Scrooby would have been hectic during these times .
Are you coming to West stockwith Andy?
Lots of history here as it as one the main shipping ports years ago.
I sure am! :D
The distance to Plymouth MA is incorrect on the signpost. Plymouth MA is approximately 3200 miles away. I think someone accidentally used the distance to Plymouth MI which is about 3690 miles away. 😁
Parish Noticeboard is on the side of the village hall, looks like it wasn't accessible when you were there, due to the Construction.
Also let me know if you want the keys to the church! I can get that organised for you
Ah yeah, that would have made sense, in the fenced off area
@@spikearrowsmith6243 I would like to come to Scrooby church some time in the near future, but I am a little on the social anxious side of things, and asking for something really isn't my strong point, so I tend to avoid and look elsewhere.
