I was wondering if you could maybe make a video or mention sometime what types of higher quality oils to use or brands to use in vehicles for better performance, not racing. I hear a lot about BG, and I don’t think it’s snake oil, Amsoil, Liqui Moly (for European cars), and Royal Purple. I realize you stated you’re an Amsoil dealer, but do you think any of those other brand are worth it based on your personal experience? Thanks for any response if you have time.

I watch a lot of TH-cam channels, but yours is one of the very few where I hit the ‘Like’ button even before I’ve started watching it. I just KNOW it’s going to be “a very good video”! I like what you do, and I like the way you do it. The only thing I miss from ‘the old days’ was the amusement caused by the ‘doodley-do’ ring tones and your irritation when it wasn’t answered. 😂😂 That’s more than made up for by the appearances of Lauren, aka the Wife Unit, though. Having a great day due to this video! Other than the cameo appearances from the supporting staff, this reminded me of my first suspension rebuild ever.
In 1973 I stripped and replaced the idler arm, inner and outer tire rods, a-arm bushings, upper and lower ball joints, sway bar bushings and end links, shocks and brakes. Replaced it weather it needed it or not. I did this work on my second vehicle, a 1964 Ford Ranchero, in the driveway on jack stands. Busted several knuckles but learned a ton about wrenching on cars.
Thanks for rekindling the memories Ray!😊😊😊😊😊

I don't normally comment, but you asked, so here it is. After determining, there were no major fluid loss issues. I would have taken it on a test drive in order to establish where the clicking, banging, rattling, noise was coming from. A test drive may have also brought to life other issues not noticed by the owner, aiding you in building a three tier maintenance profile.

Just for completeness I wanted to add this. The second gen Explorer which ended production in 2001, was available with the 5.0L 302 of old, however the third generation Explorer which started production in 2001 for the 2002 MY, switched over to the 4.6L modular motor platform found in the Mustang (and a bunch of other crap). So depending on the build date for that it may in fact be the 4.6L mod motor, just wanted to add this in.

Like with beer, everyone has their favorite synthetic oil. I like Mobil 1. Years ago I saw a test where they used the Amsoil additive in oil and they ran the grinding wheel against a bearing till it stopped, and they showed how little wear on it. When he was asked to try doing the same test with Mobil 1, no matter how much pressure he applied to the grinding wheel it would not stop. When they examined the bearing material. There was hardly any wear on it.
There are now many synthetic oils out there that are very good, and it would be hard to live with that difference.

What a lot of disassembly of a Mercury/Ford! I did not expect a V8 in that SUV. Once it's all put back together the customer will have a solid vehicle to drive another 100K or more. I still have an old school view on suspension rebuilds where the bushings/ball joints were replaced, not the whole control arms. I understand the economics of it, being quicker and less expensive to do the replacing of the whole control arm. I look forward to video #2 and the reassembly of everything. Thanks again for another great video...and another Lauren/Wife Unit cameo.

Speaking of Amsoil, I saw an oil filter review with a flow test stand and Amsoil's oil filters filtered dirt to a smaller size (20 microns) was 0/Zero passthrough and it flowed cold oil @32F at a higher flow rate than several other top name brand filters including Mobil 1 and K&N oil filters. So Amsoil kicks butt on oil quality and oil filters !

It's almost like a dream having another competent mechanic working along side you.. that never happens to me, its always people trying to fight the part out instead of removing the 2 bolts holding something in the way.

I am a Ford fan. The 4.6 is ( my opinion) the best engine ford has in use today. Wish we could go back to the big 460 s

I don't ever want to be one of those Reeeeee people but from the valve cover and the exhaust manifold that I saw, that looks like the 4.6L instead of the 5.0. Excellent video as always!

Lift locks. The first time I did an oil change at the gas station I worked at I didn't know about lift locks. As the work progressed, I thought I was growing because the bottom of the car kept getting closer to my head.

It never ceases to amaze me how the Ford engineers seem to go, the most difficult way to place, their nuts, bolts, or equipment under the hood. And I am a Ford guy.

Nice job Ray, I just watched the short you made about investing in new parts instead of more dealear financing for a new vehicle. I recently had my year 2000 Toyota Avalon motor re gasketed and a new water pump as it has 150,000 and was starting to weep fluids. You have a wonderful platform and I appreciate that you take the time to put out content that is relevant to many of us who don't run to the dealer for much !!!!😊

More places should film vehicle inspections when coming in for work. It would go a long way with customers to reassure them that the mechanic is being honest about the work that needs to be done. Not that they have to worry about that with your shop.

It’s good to see Dave in more videos. He seems to be more comfortable to be on camera and with you and your sense of humor. He seems to be a professional and experienced mechanic. I hope he stays with you as your business grows and becomes increasingly successful.
