PJ your first try is AMAZING. And I'm not just saying that! Thanks for being honest with us and not scrapping the video. You did great for a first timer!

The fact that after filming this, feeling low, PJ still went on stream to entertain us for a couple hours... I honestly couldn't, I would have cried. Wow.

I love your moment of honest irritation. I have the same problem where I don't give myself a break (not just related to art). In the moment, the desire to drop it and accept that I'm not meant to do it because it doesn't look how I wanted is so strong. But I have to remind myself that I'm the only one being that hard on myself. You gotta give yourself a break, let yourself breathe. Doing your best is the best you can do!

bob had a way of creating a safe and welcoming space for anyone wanting to try out painting, however once you actually try its hard not to be overly critical with yourself despite bob being very reassuring throughout the process. i have to say tho, you did do very well !! the mountain and the trees are my favourite part c: im sure bob would be very proud

Man that is such a good painting!! Even more so as your first one!
The openness about your emotions was refreshing tho i found you doubting the value of this video sad since its legitimately one of the most entertaining videos I've watched in a while
    Your perseverance is inspiring

Thank you for being so honest and open with the struggle you faced during the process. Being critical and want everything you make perfect is impossible, but you still want to achieve it for some reason. I'm proud of you for not quitting and reflected about it all, I'm very happy Sophie was around to support you when you needed it, Booby bless you Sophie!!

I think every artist, no matter your medium, ultimately felt PJ's frustration and self-doubt deep within your heart. But I'm glad you pushed through it and took a quick moment aside to talk about how you were feeling in the post-editing process. It was an honest discourse of the process, and we need to acknowledge it more freely.
That being said, I think you did great on your first try! If you do choose to go back and do more, I'm sure we'd love to see your progress too. (:

PJ i´m studying painting and let me tell you, it´s more than normal to feel insecure about one´s art(specially when our insecurities pressure us even more) but i truly love that despite those things you did this beautiful painting, as it is the reason why i think that you´re an incredible artist. I would love to see future paintings from you(as long as you´re comfy).

This is amazing, I've been doing art for over a decade now and taught several people and being upset with yourself is normal. I'm so glad you powered through it. There's no way to build a skill without letting yourself be bad at it first

for a first time bob ross follow-along, you did great! i can understand being frustrated. it is so easy to be hard on yourself, especially because bob does it so effortless. i am glad that you gave yourself grace. this type of painting is his craft, and you have gotten very good at your own craft. i did a bob ross painting a few years ago. it is very rough and has obvious mistakes, but i have grown to love it. maybe you will love yours too.

100% wanting to quit and being super critical during the process is painting in a nutshell for me, i always get so frustrated when my work doesn't look like i think it "should" but after I walk away from it, I usually love it in the end. and for what its worth, I think your first oil painting looks fab . but it's always going to look 'bad' if you're expecting it to look just like bobs - it's a PJ painting so it will be different by default and thats a blessing

watching many moons after this has been uploaded, and as an oil painter, bobs look so effortless and smooth in those early steps 100% because of the camera quality. the brushstrokes look different because bob used very soft, dense brushes. the density creates a softness that coarse hair brushes can’t give. and the angle shape of the palette knife changes everything. if you follow one of these tutorials and you’re like wtf it’s not the same, it’s not your fault! a lot goes into making that Bob Ross effect

There is a scene in Soul Surfer where they are looking at images that are zoomed in and they try to guess what the image actually is. Then zoomed out they get to see the whole picture. So, whatever is going on and you're too focused on the minor things, take a step back and see the whole picture. You get a different perspective. Your painting turned out great! Even when the camera was zoomed in and focusing on your paint strokes, it was coming together quite nicely. Remember to go easy on yourself if you're struggling. Hope everyone has a nice day/night! Thank you for sharing, PJ!

Questioning your painting, being unsure if anything you make is actually just a waste of time, demanding perfection from yourself is something students in my art university faced every day. Listening to you describing your feelings literally made me flashback to that time. I totally feel you, being an artist is hard and sometimes very unpleasant. It's all fun and games until you take it seriously, especially when you or your mentor are criticizing everything you do all the time.
I'm so happy you didn't quit and kept going. It always comes together in the end.

I've always kinda wanted to try painting with a Bob Ross tutorial, but feel inadequate to do so because I never painted with oils or even acrylics. I definitely feel you on wanting it to be perfect even at first try, but that way of thinking stops me from trying or doing stuff most of the times. Yours is an incredible result as a first attempt and I admire your determination and capacity of dealing with frustration in order to finish the painting. Also is really helpfull to have love ones encourage you to keep going, I love that Sophie was there to do so. Awesome video and thanks for sharing your point view.

honestly, seeing PJ (one of the most creative and artistic people I know of) struggle makes me feel so much better about when I try art stuff for the first time (like when I did oil the first time). I think all of us beat ourselves up, even though it is ok not to be perfect the first time. Like, this painting still turned out not bad at all, and honestly some parts (the mountains especially) turned out actually quite great! And the flaws are ok to have, it is part of the creative process. And as long as it is fun to do, then there is no reason to not do it. (this was tbh me writing this to convince myself of this truth. but it also seems to be something that all artists struggle with). Final thought: it does not matter that the painting was not perfect, because this video was still fun to watch!

I very rarely leave comments on youtube but this video inspired me to share something…
I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts on aiming for perfection even when doing something for the first time. I do the same thing with the things I try, mainly school related, and I constantly tell myself that my work isn’t good enough, even when receiving top marks. It’s something I really struggle with, so thank you PJ for being honest and reflecting on your reaction. You really inspire me with your content, both to be more creative and to embrace the more goofy side of myself, so hearing something like this from someone I look up to really moved me. I will also try to be kinder to myself in my learning progress - nothing needs to be perfect as long as you gave it your best shot! (Maybe except making a space ship 😊)
Take care and thank you ❤

PJ you did great! I love the mountain, I think it's really cool looking, and there aren't nearly enough paintings with rivers of blood flowing through forests. I appreciate you leaving your frustration in the video...how many of us artists, no matter the medium, have felt that way... but truly it's because we're too close to our own work to see it objectively.

I've always been very inspired and fascinated by your ability to throw yourself into trying new things and going through with it while staying calm, but I greatly appreciate you being authentic and showing yourself getting frustrated as well. As an artist myself, I struggle a lot with perfectionism and getting angry at myself whenever something doesn't turn out the way I want it to. I'm slowly getting better at accepting my "happy accidents" and just focusing on the fact that I'll at least inevitably improve by practicing. Great video as usual and I'd love to see you try oil paints again.

Pretty encouraging to see someone's first try with the medium.
I've been wanting to try this for many many years but was always a bit scared off bc it's commonly said that "oil is difficult". I think I even bought this fan brush for the trees once and some oil paints, but never dared to venture past acrylics.
I never know how to do that liquid white layer, either. It all just seemed so complicated, even if I realistically could just look up tutorials.
But yeah, hence it's kinda encouraging to see someone just do it. It's a really good first try! I also like the mountain a lot :)

PJ, you’re so hard on yourself!! Speaking as an illustrator here - oil paints are NO JOKE. Like, they are a difficult medium. You did so fucking well with them, I’m so impressed that this was your first time. I have never tried oil paints because I’m too intimidated and I can guarantee that when I finally do go in that direction my first attempts are going to be waaaaaaay worse than you. It’s like learning a new instrument - even if you play the violin really well, if you suddenly pick up the cello then there’s going to be a learning curve. You did a really great and important thing here as an artist, PJ, you took yourself out of your comfort zone. It’s so painful, isn’t it? It SUCKS. But it’s vital for growth. If you stay in your comfort zone then you’re never going to learn and grow and develop as an artist.
I am glad you made it and you posted the video - your little breakdown halfway through was instantly familiar to anyone who does creative things (so probably like 99% of the audience) - we have allllll been there. The impressive thing was that you kept going (and I’m so glad you had Sophie there to give you a little pep talk! Good job Sophie!!)
The thing that helps me when I start comparing my work to masters like Bob Ross is to kind of check myself mentally - like, it’s kind of presumptuous for me to come sailing in and expecting my piece to be as good as someone who has literally spent thousands and thousands of hours of their life working on their skills in that medium. I haven’t put in the work that they have! I haven’t earned it yet. All I can do is keep going. If I keep going, then I will get better.
I have “make bad art” written on every page of my sketchbook lately. It’s a little reminder to keep stepping outside my comfort zone. To try new things, try the difficult pose or weird lighting or whatever - just keep trying to grow. I give myself permission to make mistakes, because making good art isn’t really my goal here. Learning and developing as an artist is. So well done for doing that!!! You did so good, PJ. Congrats!!!!
Also little note to anyone who’s made it this far - you’re doing great!! Also if you feel like picking up oil paints after watching this video, please only use them in a very well-ventilated area! The fumes are very bad for you.

I know words on a screen from a stranger might seem like nothing, but that moment you almost gave up is how a lot of people feel in some way or another. Creatively I suffer with the same issue; I've been wanting to give up writing stories because I don't think I'm good enough and see no point in trying anymore, but then I have to tell myself that it doesn't matter, I'm allowed to have fun getting my ideas out whether they're any good or not. Of course you won't be brilliant at something straight away, you have to learn first, however long it might take, but are you enjoying it? If you're enjoying it, keep doing it. (I've been writing for over 25 years and I'm still crap at it, but I love it.)

PJ, I'm so glad that you went ahead and posted the video. This is how I feel a lot of the time when I try to follow tips from other writers - my process is too different, my writing isn't good enough, I'm not a solid enough editor - and it can be really difficult to move past that feeling and push forward with the creative process. But like you say, giving yourself time to rest, reset, and come back to it later and appreciate it for what it is really is the key. We never give ourselves enough credit.

i love your one so much! i have pretty much that same experience when following one of bobs or just anyones art tutorials too. i think when trying to copy someone elses art, especially the legend that is bob ross, it can feel discouraging to see yours not look the same, but that doesnt make it any less amazing. art is such a personal thing n everyone having their own interpretations and style is what makes it so beautiful and fun! this is just me, but when i dont like my own art, i try to look and pretend it was done by someone else which helps gives a whole new perspective n helps me be less self critical too lol. im glad you managed to find the strength to finish yours though, it really is something to be proud of, PJ ❤

For your first ever oil painting, one of the hardest paints to work with, that was really good! One thing I noticed that would’ve helped (besides the pallet size) is your brushes. He has a natural 2” flat brush which is often extra wide. Whereas your synthetic one was very fine. Which makes the softer techniques nearly impossible. But that being said. You’ll never go straight to Monet from the get go. So I’m glad you got to a point where you can accept your work as “ok”.

I would love to see this done with multiple people, but everyone trades canvases after each section of the painting. Paint the sky, switch canvases. Paint the mountain, switch canvases. Paint some trees, switch canvases. And so on and so forth.

I both appreciate your honesty and think the painting you did is genuinely beautiful. I'm sure if I had done the same thing I would be dissatisfied with myself, since I struggle from the same "needing to be perfect the first time" mentality, but since it's not my work I can see it as what it is -- a really nice landscape. Knowing that people who I consider to be really good at art (you) still get frustrated makes it easier to feel like I'm allowed to be frustrated when also doing something for the first time.
Thank you for still posting this, even if you were unhappy with the result.

that moment of frustration is so relatable. i am a touch-and-go artist, that is, that i always like to create art but i set the expectations of my abilities far too high for my experience and skill set to meet. it leads me to beat myself up, give up on pieces and take long breaks from creating. this is my biggest fault as an artist because how can i expect myself to improve if i don't allow myself to fail and/or learn from my mistakes and experimentation. thanks for sharing, you did great!

honestly the moment of wanting to quit, to give up, makes me tear up. every artist has been there where you think it's not good and not worth it. and we are always our worst enemy. as everyone has said, its a really good first attempt for having never painted with oil paints before.
pj you did great, and to all artists, whether it's your first attempt or your fiftieth- you are doing great. don't give up :)

this video was so wonderful :) I recently started a bob ross painting too, and it can be discouraging comparing his outcome to yours. it’s so much fun to just create something though, once you take a little of the pressure off yourself :) you did great, pj. we all appreciate your creativity and willingness to share your learning with us.

i’m not an artist at ALL, so maybe my opinion is invalid. but for what it’s worth, i think your artwork is WONDERFUL. i’ve noticed you seem to put yourself down a lot with this kind of stuff but i could only dream of creating some of the work that you do just for fun. sure, everyone has room for improvement but nobody ever sees a piece of someone else’s art and thinks “it could be better” , we just think “WOW THAT’S FREAKIN COOL!”

PJ your painting is beautiful. i totally feel that frustration you have while doing the painting. i've been through that many times i guess it's part of the creative process? i don't know. but through the years i just kept doing creative things even if its not as good as i expect it to be. creative things brings me joy and that's important to me. Your version is unique to you. Seeing it side by side with Bob is so amazing just seeing you create your own happy little landscape. that made me realize something about my thoughts too when i get in that mood. Keep on going PJ. We absolutely love your art work. as i myself too will keep painting and do my little creative works and facing my own set of frustrations as well. You did amazing.

Oh man that feeling of needing to be perfect at something the first time trying is way too relatable. It's something I keep trying to work through myself. But for what it's worth I do think the painting is better than you gave yourself credit for, and even if it's not, I know you learned something from it and can do better next time!!

i’ve literally written a song about how hard i’ve tried (and failed) to make art over the years; that doomed first try can feel so major to those of us who judge ourselves on our mistakes rather than celebrate our happy accidents ❤ i always find it incredibly inspiring to watch another artist trying new mediums (i’ve loved your work in the field of cardboard for many moons now 🫡) and it’d be so cool to see how your style and your stories could be applied to the world of oil painting, it might even bring out a new story for you! i really hope you keep fighting through the learning curve until you make something you really like! screw perfect!! striving for perfection in our ART? our HUMAN ART? that comes from our HUMANITY which is inherently FLAWED??? ok officially the longest comment i’ve ever left on a video 😦 love u PJ, keep on keeping on!

I think that for your first time PJ, you did a great job - your mountains look really nice, as do the trees and the orange/yellow bushes.
I used to take oil painting lessons may years ago. One thing that I really love about oil painting is that if you do make a mistake you can let the paint dry for about a week, come back, cover it it up, and start over; or if the area you are working on had a dry background you can simply wipe it off. Oil painting can be intidating, but it is also very forgiving. Also I would often be covered in paint at the end of a lesson, even when I tried to be so careful and clean.

I know that feeling of putting yourself down when things don't go EXACTLY as you want them to and also don't give myself enough breaks to help manage my expectations and acknowledge the process/progress... My perfectionism is well, to put it nicely, annoying to deal with...
Sophie encouraging you through it is very nice and helpful to get through this process and honestly from my point of view, it ended up being spectacular! Especially for your first time!

Thanks for leaving the part in where you want ot give up. I have the same problem with art as you do. If I dont feel like its perfect i dont want to continue. It really touched me to see a great artist also struggling when trying out a new medium and it gives me a feeling of slight comfort.

honest to goodness this looks OUTSTANDING. it looks like the same exact painting but in a different art style. it's gorgeous. i'm glad you were able to come to terms with it, and i appreciate the transparency you always show with your art. i experience far more frustration that satisfaction with my art, so it's nice to know i'm not always alone in that (as nice as knowing someone else is suffering can be 😂)

PJ thank you so much for your honesty!! That means so much. It's really helpful to see those moments from people you admire, y'know? Oil paints are really rough, I've been painting for years ans they're a bitch even still. Bob Ross was like an angel and not a human - he could breathe on a canvas and it would be perfect lol. But like wow the way you recognized your feelings and allowed yourself to feel it and move on... so good.
