Gymnasts are known for having ripped, muscular bodies (especially their upper body and arms). But what is the reason for this? In this video, I show you how to build muscle like a gymnast by copying the most important element of their training. Sure, there are many aspects of a good workout routine that goes into gymnastics, but in order to build muscle the fastest you need to incorporate something I call dynamic isometrics.
Prolonged, high level multi-muscle tension is a prerequisite of bodyweight muscle building. Gymnasts train with a significant amount of these types of movements and exercises in their programs, and it’s the reason that they are able to build such muscular bodies. I show you just two examples of combination movements that can be done to build muscle without needing any weights.
The first is the pulling combo that combines a front lever raise with an L-sit pullup and concludes with a L-twist in each direction for your abs and core. What makes this exercise difficult is not necessarily the individual components of the movement but the transition between them. Once you have that high degree of tension developed through your body, it is very demanding to refocus the attention to a different area of your body without letting the original movement completely fall apart.
Any gymnast worth their weight must have this level of command and strength to perform at a high level. Due to this however, they see very high levels of muscle overload and hence muscle growth. This occurs without needing any equipment or time spent in the gym lifting weights.
The next pushing combination is one that pairs up a chest dip with a plus position (that improves the strength of the entire shoulder girdle) and finishes with something we call the gymnast ab pike. This last portion of the exercise combo really hits your abs and obliques hard. The key again however is that the combination movement is much harder than any one component of it. And that my friend, is the key to taking your gains to another level.
You may be able to do 10 or 20 dips, but pairing them up with the other moves I show you here might limit that number to just 5 or 6. Is that bad? Not at all, especially when you consider that the level of tension and overload required to do those fewer reps is enormously beneficial to your ability to build muscle.
If you are looking for a complete bodyweight workout program to build muscle in 6 weeks, be sure to head to athleanx.com and get your ATHLEAN XERO program. You don’t need a single piece of equipment at all and can still gain muscle by training like an athlete and putting the science back in bodyweight training.

What is it about a gymnasts workout routine that allows them to build so much muscle? See if you know before you watch.
    A) Time Under Tension
    B) Eccentric Loading
    C) Bodyweight Training
    D) Lack of Energy Leaks

Being stronger isn't always a matter of training. The reason I like Jeffs explanations are for the fact it's designed around personal excellence. Sometimes strength is totally genetics like with that Kali Muscle guy. Huge dude but terrible nutrition. All genetics, which isn't anything to be ashamed of, but it can tip the scales.
The question becomes "Are you meeting your fullest potential?"

Gymnasts seem to know something that the rest of the weightlifting world doesn't. Coming from a traditional weight-lifting perspective, I've always only thought about muscle-tension aspects in isolation: e.g. only doing isometric at a time, only doing concentric and eccentric at a time. This is revolutionary Jeff. Thumbs up.

Those movements you showed us, are not part of our training, nor are they hard. Muscular growth comes from all the things you say but you forgot to mention leverage loading. We dont really do dips. We dont really do bent arm exercises at all actually. Most of our exercises and ALL of our skills are based on straight arm strength. Thats where the growth comes from. Holding a load with your arm bent?? You wont grow. Eccentric? yeah maybe if the load is great enough, but an isometric hold at maximum load? Yes.
Example. A planche (which is a B level skill.. Means its 2nd easiest thing we do but its not really that easy) is basically a push up with your arms locked out and then your feet and legs off the ground. So you're basically suspending your entire bodyweight on your hands with your arms fully locked out. That engages your bicep to contract at its maximum to stop your elbow from hyperextending (breaking your elbow). So basically as an example, a 70kg human doing a planche will have about 35kgs of load on the bicep (add the extra from no leverage) at full extension rather than curled. The shoulders then are isometrically contracted to stabilise your arms and your core does the rest of the work. Look at gymnasts at elite level that will do a maltese on the rings ( even more load on the biceps) and have a look at their arms. MASSIVE. All from that kind of load.

Its basically a reverse Maltese which is a C level from memory. Might even be a D skill. Cross to Maltese is a D. The Iron cross is a B level skill as well

    • @sv.motorsports
      @sv.motorsports 8 ปีที่แล้ว +60

ProjectSurvivor165 You would have to start with the very basics as it goes beyond just having muscle. On the rings i started out with Support holds and levers but i shouldnt have. I shouldve started on the floor first with variations of push ups specific to movements on the rings. Stuff like Scapula push ups are excellent as they get your body started in getting used to a hollow back position which is used for basically every move on the rings. Straight arm flies gets the tendons used to the load of having locked arms. But always started with very light loads because the tendons will fail quickly if you arent ready for it.

    • @shaktipat736
      @shaktipat736 3 ปีที่แล้ว

What does calisthenics have to do with the video? Calisthenics is the rushed, injury-prone spin-off of gymnastics. It leads to more injury because it is rushed in the progressions, whereas gymnastics is very gradual and prioritises mobility over strength, as mobility allows you to perform exercises with proper forms from day 1 (which reduces risk of injury) and to access more of your strength. Weight training leads to stiffer joints, which is not ideal for many things such as survival, functional strength, health and military drills.

@@npn8945 false. Go study some gymnastics and see how progressions are to go, for example, from the incline push-up to the hollow back press, or from ring row to front lever pulls and beyond. Gymnastics also incorporates mobility with every strength exercise, while calisthenics neglects that. No wonder most calisthenics practitioners have issues with shoulders, elbows and wrists.
Try actually studying things on technical books, rather than rather a couple of articles and watching a couple of videos, thinking you suddenly are knowledgeable enough in a field to discuss with people with over 12 years of in-depth research and studies in their background.

Hi jeff, i think its also because they have to be explosive when doing some movements. Plus training everyday for hours compared to how a gym goer would train for sets. Plus their holds are all bodyweight which is much heavier than bands or normal dumbells.. Thats what i think..

Think of it in terms of push-ups. You can do a regular push-up or you can do a clapping push-up which requires you to be explosive, balanced, coordinated, and quick. Not only that, each time you lunge yourself in the air, you're going against gravity which makes it more difficult especially if you put on more weights/resistance.

    Could it simply be:
    A) Gymnasts tend to have low bodyfat (making their muscles visible)
    B) A gymnast must do a billion pullups, dips, and other difficult exercises?
I think this whole "It's the transitions between exercises" misses the mark. To be a gymnast (a good one at least) you must be able to perform lots of difficult exercises which require lots of strength. And you must do them a billion times. Sounds like a great equation for building muscle.

Terrific video. I think you're really on to something here. It's something like the fact that a bit of instability in a typical exercise ups the growth quotient, like the difference between using free weights and a machine. Only more so. Also, with bodyweight exercises, adding a bit of dynamic movement can be a way to very gradually increase the difficulty.

  • @triedntruefitness

Interesting video. However, first let us bust the myth that male gymnasts are 5’2” (per posted comments). I am 5’10” and competed both on a H.S. and college gymnastics team. Two teammates come to mind on the college team both slightly over 6 ft. tall. One was the national champion on the Hi-bar the other 3rd place on side horse (NCAA-Nationals). Plus a USA former Olympian (1960) was 6 ft tall and another former Olympian (1964) was 5’9” Both graduates of my university.
Second to excel at gymnastics is one answer to why gymnasts are so built? The answer is in these questions:
Are you willing to practice 3 to 4 hours per day?
Are you willing to work the palm of your hands raw and bloody?
Are you willing to be coached and take criticism on your form and toe point?
Are you willing to dedicate 6 yrs plus of your life?
    Are you fearless and brave?
If you answered yes to the above questions then you can start training to become a gymnast!

When people usually say "To build a gymnasts body, just do gymnastics", I think they forget that a good part of the sport includes doing aerial jumps and flips off of high bars and rings as much as all the stuff mentioned in this video...
If one is to assume practicing the sport will lead to achieving the same exact type of physique, this should also figure into it just as much.
Which is why Christopher Sommer (gymnastics coach) once mentioned that the courses he teaches for adults do not represent *full* gymnastics training, just the basic strength building aspects... it's not meant to actually turn someone into a gymnast.
