Adi Shankara was the greatest philosopher of his time. He debated the Buddhists and defeated them ideologically. One of the reasons why Buddhism declined in India.

Buddhism was temporary answer to that situation where Dharmaglani was all pervasive. Jagadguru Sri Shankaracharya re-established the way of life of Indians by his intelectual prowess. Buddha by establishing Damma stalled the deterioration of Dharma. Shankaracharya re-established dharma by guiding the mankind rescuing them from futher downfall. That is why Buddha is recognised as one of the Avatar of lord Vishnu in Dashavatar.

_Adi Shankaracharya_ was not a *"philosopher".* A drunkard can come up with a seemingly beautiful philosophy as to why he drinks. His work didn't sprout from intellectual musings but through deep perception of reality. There is an existential basis to the works of his. He was an intellectual powerhouse born out of enlightenment.

Buddhism has been changed and lost what Gautam Buddha's actual knowledge gave to disciples. I found one north-east Indian reading Chinese buddhism and at that movement I was laughing at how people changed Gautam Buddha actual teaching and distorted and made it own.

I accept that at one time Buddhism had a greater influence in India but as a hindu that doesn't mean i don't like buddha i agree or disagree with him with some issues.sanatan dharama is a very flexible or Libral religion during ancient times so debates about scriptures or upanishads are so normal and appreciated.we have to change according to the time and conditions.

Shankaracharya is considered one of the most influential philosophers in Hinduism. He was responsible for defining and systematising religion in its current form. He also contributed to the development of Advaita Vedanta, a school of Hindu philosophy that emphasises non-duality and the unity of all reality.
Adi shankaracharya established the sharda peeth.
    Sharda Peeth, Sharda
Regarded as one of the top most centers of learning and knowledge in ancient times, Sharda Peeth that lies in the LOC territory between Pakistan and India, remains a deserted site since the partition in 1947. Indians aren’t allowed to enter the premises since the area is controlled by our neighbouring country.
Situated about 150kms from Muzzafarabad in Pakistan and around 130kms from Srinagar in India, this Hindu temple is one of the three important pilgrimage points for Kashmiri Pandits, the other two being Martand Sun Temple and Amarnath Temple.
There is no shrine at this site, but only rock pillars that have seemed to survive over time; though it is said that there was once a Shivling in the compound. The legend says that when Shiva was carrying his dead wife Sati Devi’s body across Aryrvartha (abode of aryas), parts of her body fell, creating ‘shaktis peethas’ or divine spots everywhere. It is said that her right hand fell in the village of Sharda in Azad Kashmir and became one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peeths for the pundits. Then again, there are tons of other stories that will make us deep dive into the realms of Hindu mythology. The word Sharda in Kashmiri means Sarwasti, who is the Goddess of Knowledge.
This 5000 years old temple also stands where the famous Sharada University was built, which is now completely ruined. Thousands of scholars taught here, and it is believed that it had one of the biggest libraries to ever exist.

Here the main point of the debate is " importance of women in Ancient Indian society " . Women was given position of judge between 2 scholars and also was allowed to intervene and debate... she was so intellectual that even great scholar like Adi Shankaracharya had to think deeper to respond, it shows woman education and empowerment even if she was a Home maker.
This is our culture and history, would like to add that women at various occasions faught battles and won from Ancient times of Ramayana to mefival - modern era ....Queen Kaikai ( Lord Ram's step mother....to Queen Velu Nachiyar in 1770s defeated British with only woman Army...Queen Chennama in 1800s and Queen Laxmibai again in1850s....

Actually what you call a ego is not really a ego, Debates have been a part of our religion to avoid EGO and understand the true essence of LIFE more clearly. But in Abrahamic religions like Christianity and Muslim, there is no place for Debate on Religion that's why they have been very close-minded when it comes to religion. When India(Bharat) allowed Abrahamic religions to come to India they face much cultural destruction and Hate for the Indian people and whatever way they tried to convert people of India, believing that we are Superior some other wasteful things. If you take the example of Science they debate to improve.

I like to believe we are all part of the same source energy and all is governed by a couple of universal laws that we should be aware of and yeah...

This is the reason why all the Dharmic religious texts are mostly scientific books on all subjects but in Abrahamic religions only one book is above other books and that completely contradicts sciences.

Swami Sarvapriyananda has great videos on Vedanta, he is a practicing monk. Sanatan is a bundle of ideas where there are concepts varying from no go to one god and one god and his many manifestations.
In sanatan questioning is not discouraged but is given more importance than answers because questions demolish the established answers
All the sanatan books are compilation of words of wisdom of wisemen and not from GOD which contains commandments that are to be obeyed without questioning.
Sanatan is based on Updesh ie advise. If that advise passes the test of your critical thinking you can accept it or move on to next level.
This process of critically examining an idea was called Shastrarth. ie questioning the established idea and propounding a new idea.

He was one of the greatest saints of kaliyuga with all the super natural powers which one can think of.Origin of universe- Bhraman>god the almighty(lord vishnu0>mother nature or sakthi(simultaneous origination )- they work complimentary to keep the creation going and she is the source of all energy in this universe-so duality exists fm there but Sankara didnt accept duality and argued for akathva or oneness of the bhraman only.My former guru says due to this ego problem he couldnt go further higher up.
.1.once while travelling astrally with saint Narada -when they were over guruvayur(lord vishnu the presiding deity)narada descended to pay his respects but sankara declined saying he didnt believe in deities but the bhraman only- fell right down in front of the idol helpless and no energy. He praised the lord composing a beautiful poem called bhugangaprayathm .He was directed to proceed and put the temple administration and give directions for the yearly festivals ,and all the other objectives related to it and hence was forgiven,
2.In his determination to prove duality wrong he went for a debate with the devotees of sakthi(at Mookambi temple in karanataka)
.The bhramin priests and devotees prayed to her as they stood no chance against him .At night she descended into his room and he found he was without any energy to even get up.She said -leave tomorrow by sunrise and no arguements with my devotees.and he complied.
3.Once roaming in the Himalayas he met a wild hunter fm the lowest of castes and asked him to give him right of way and not come in his path. The hunter(siva himself sankara was only an incarnation of siva)lectured him and sankara lost out in the debate that followed and siva adivised him that with his caste mentality he cant go much far in spirituality.

Just to clarify few things. Aatma is not soul it's the self. There's no such thing as soul in advait philosophy, And God is nothing but the higher consciousness. According to advaid philosophy. Braham is just a name given to that consciousness just to point at it. Another name of braham is atma aka the self. It's a very vast philosophy. It takes a lot of time and effort to learn it. I've studied vedanta philosophy for 2 years.

Debates happened very often in ancient Bharat. Infact you will be surprised to know that our religious texts are mostly debates or QnA sessions 😂. Bhagwat Gita is an example. Todays Indian news channels should learn the ettiquets from them.

Now you are coming to know what it means to be a sanatani, everything has to be learnt through self discovery, my own self discovery is that you can realise who you are through meditation, and that you don't need a guru. You can know your divine sacredness through meditation, you don't have to become worthy to any man made standard and you don't have to follow like a sheep . Danny South Africa.

I think the contemporary thought process is built upon ancient intellect . I too have a moderate opinion about life . However deeper questions ,just like mathematical problem ,one can give the final answer ,without explaining the process to come to the conclusion. The process of coming to an answer is a deeper experiance that just taking an answer for granted . In ancient times they debated deeper questions ,sometimes in public . It makes the public enlightened aswell.

Dear Zuzana It was nice to see that you are now understanding what is SPIRITUALITY . YOU HAVE HIT THE NAIL BY finding the right kind of video for your numerous questions and hazy picture about HINDU Spirituality. In my earlier replies to you and in comments you would remember that SPIRITUALITY IN THE HINDU PHILOSOPHY IS VERY DIFFERENT AND Is very DEEP DETAIL THAN WHAT YOU AS A REIKI MASTER KNEW. BY MERELY KNOWING SIX chakras is of no use. The mediation and spirituality practiced in INDIA and by Hindus and philosophy is so deep FOR a Foriegner to understand. You are now on the right path for your curioousity and exploration journey about HINDUISM AND HINDU PHILOSOPHY . Yoga is not that kind of exercises which you do YOGA is a means to get to the real Brahma a way to reach the higher realms of meditation to reach the eternal bliss. The story where ADI SHANKARA GOES OUT OF THE BODY INTO THE KINGS BODY IS KNOWN AS PARA KAYA PRAVESH which is a very difficult YOGIC TANTRA which was also done by GURU MACHHINDRA NATH OUT OF THE "NAV NATH " SAMPRADAYA.
YOGIC TANTRA ALSO HAS CONCEPTS AND PRACTICES OF BECOMING SO MINUTE LIKE AN ATOM TO GO THROUGH GLASS, GO THROUGH HARD ROCK DISAAPEAR AND REAPPEAR , TELEPORTATION , DO TELEPATHIC CONTACT, PARAPSCYOLOGICALLY PROJECT YOUR FULL BODY AS IF YOU ARE PRESENT, MAKE YOURSELF PRESENT SIMULTANEOUSLY AT MANY PLACES OR PROJECT YOURSELF INTO SOMEONES DREAMS . THUS Meditation described in Hindu scriptures and practiced by various sages and evolved saints are plenty. MAY you be successful on this journey. There are many videos and books in much more detail for you to explore.

Sorry if I sound presumptuous…..but the debate was not about who is superior….it was about which way of life is superior in terms of living a meaning full life and reach Devine power…each one was proponent of their ideology. It is not about ego that’s why there was debate and not enforcement of once ideology….and yes this is historic event

I hear you. I guess the way I look at it and there are many angles and many are valid = so I'm definitely not taking away from what you are saying as it's also very fair. How I view is that we are all God and nothing we do can not be not perfect or better than anything else. We are different expressions of divinity - there is no comparison. I do in this context associate 'ego' with comparison. I think there certainly can be presumptuous 'a better' way than the other but I think different things work for different people and we are all divine expressions and 'God' wants to know it all. Not too sure if I'm making myself clear here.

Shankaracharya and Mandanmishra debate is incomplete without knowing about Guru of Mandanmishra 'Kumaril Bhatt '. Aadi Shankaracharya regretted whole life because Kumaril Bhatt didn't wrote a book for him. Defeat Kumaril Bhatt in debate and ask him to write book on Adishankaracharya's Adwait Siddhant, this was the task for Shankaracharya, but Kumaril Bhatt sacrificed himself in fire in front of Shankaracharya, and send Shankaracharya to his disciple Mandanmishra for debate.

Correction ma'am.... These were not the battle of beliefs or religion, generating out of their ego. Both of them knew that one can achieve God's grace by any way he follows. It is the debate of Philosophy. Such debates on Philosophy used to take place in ancient times. Not only in India but also thorough out other ancient civilizations.
In ancient Greece there were also such debates used to take place... Plato, Aristotle, Socretus also participated in many debates on philosophy just like it.. Do you think they also had ego problem??
