  • Magnetic Brakes, also known as eddy current brakes or in induction brakes have been used on Roller Coasters since the late 90's. They are comprised of a very conductive but not ferrous fin or plate, usually made from copper which slides over or next to a strong permanent magnet, the magnet induces eddy currents in the fin, the fin itself then becomes an electromagnet with a field that opposes the one from the permanent magnet, the result is the kinetic energy of the roller coaster train being efficiently converted to heat energy and dissipated to the environment.
The benefits of this system include no physical contact resulting in no wear and tear and virtually no maintenance required as well as the deceleration being much more gradual and smooth, providing a more comfortable experience for riders.

Aka Electromagnet brake, Lenz's law brake, lenz law brake, eddy current brake, train brakes.
    Didn't know that

We need more brakes that fold down. That just looks so cool

one of the coolest parts is that they are self observant too, since the eddy currents induce an electric charge you can measure the breakforce and then assume speed/velocity.

Has anyone attempted the use of this style of brakes on freight trains at rail crossings to prevent vehicle/train accidents in advance?
