5 Reasons I HATE My Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T!

  • This video shows 5 reasons that are not perfect for every potential owner of the 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T. Don't overthink this video. It's more intended for a potential Genesis Coupe owner. If someone is looking to buy this car and use the rear seats for people, well, that's not what this car is intended for. The seats are great for storage space and luggage, which is all I ever use them for. But if you do plan to use the rear seats and have this as a family car, you should probably buy a sports sedan instead. Overall though, for me, the seats serve there function for backpacks and extra space. It can be annoying to have to dig your key out of your pocket to open the trunk if your hands are full. I have noticed that with grocery shopping and traveling with a loaded up car, it would be a bit more convenient to tap a button on the trunk rather than digging out the key in my pocket. Obviously that's not even close to being a real issue, but since I use the trunk a lot It could be more convenient. For some reason I always have trouble getting things out of my pockets, I need bigger pockets! LOL. This car really does need a tune to fully optimize my bolt on parts and truly get all the power out of the turbo. Once I get a custom BTR Tune, it will be good to go! It has the potential! The 6 speed manual paired to the 2.0T can get around 35mpg on the highway. But with the 5 speed AT, I have to go less than 72mph to get up to 30mpg. I could care less about gas millage because I don't put a lot of miles on the car, but I am a fan of efficiency. If it has been raining and your car has been sitting outside, the water collects on the rear glass making it difficult to see out. That's a typical coupe issue. But a 350z does offer a windscreen wiper back there. I would still stick with no wiper blade back there because it looks better with out one. But when backing into a parking space, visibility can be slightly limited. Overall those reasons don't make a big difference, the MPG difference without a 6th gear doesn't make any kind of dent in my wallet since i work/school less than 3 miles from my house! The rear seats are perfect for what I use them for, but people do assume its a great 4 seat car just because it has rear seats. It's a 2+2 seater, and the seats are great for storage and if you desperately need to bring a 2nd passenger. Get a Golf or a WRX if you want sporty and family friendly rear seats. Also, the car is easily able to be custom tuned to crank out some serious power!! I have enjoyed this car to it's full potential over the past 3.5 years, and can't wait for more to come.

    Ive got a list of 5 things that are wrong with my 3.8 2015 gen coupe guys. Here it goes! #1 I dont have enough clearance to do offroading with my gen coupe. #2 I dont have dualies in the back for optimized towing AND the stock frame did not come with a hitch setup in the back. #3 I would prefer a truck and my gen coupe isnt a truck and its Hyundais fault for not selling me truck. #4 I also want a van cause its been 2 years since I bought and have since had twins and now my family wont fit in my gen coupe and my gen coupe truck is too lifted to easily get the children in and out of. #5 My gen coupe isnt as good on gas as an electric car and I want an electric car now.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Justaguyyoutubin You are definitely blowing this vid out of proportion. I'm just pointing out some nit picky things that aren't perfectly ideal. Obviously there are many cars to pick from in the world to fit the drivers needs. With the trunk button, others cars similar to this, FRS, g37, have ways to open it from the rear. And when loading up the truck with a bunch of stuff or going in and out of it a lot, in a short amount of time. It can get annoying to find your keys or keep opening the door to open it again. If you look at my channel, it's pretty obvious I use this car for what it's intended for. I've never even had someone in my rear seats. Also, a lot of people assume that these 2+2 seater cars are good alternatives to sedans, but with 2 doors. So I'm letting those people know that these are made for extra storage space not people.

      +Honda4RideRed Let me address this button problem as well. I drive a 2013 Genesis 3.8 Track. Lets say there is a button on the back and your hands are full with grocery bags. You can either A. Drag those bags across your bumper and trunk scratching your paint to push a button or B. Set them down and do exactly what you would with a key fab, press a button. Point being if your hands are too full to push a key fab they're too full to push a "trunk button" without messing up your paint. Think about it. You should talk about how for a car that advertises 270 something hp it feels gutless. I test drove the 2.0 and the 3.8 when I bought mine and it was a night and day difference. Trade that thing in and get some power in your life. Either way , Genesis' are great. Oh a pic of mine on my channel.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Scottie Mikles If you have your hands full of groceries, you only need to put down half of what you are carrying to press a trunk button. So it would still be easier having a button on the trunk because it is more annoying to put one hands worth of bags on the ground and dig in your pocket to get the key to then pop the trunk. When you could just put one hands worth of bags down and press a button on the rear of the car.
      A tune will will get the 2.0 to have more power at the wheel than the 3.8. A few of my friends have 2013 2.0ts with basic bolt ons and custom tunes and are around 300whp and 350wtq. So it doesn't take much for a 2.0 to out run the 3.8. The power delivery is still a lot different of course.

    • @scottmikles5460
      @scottmikles5460 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, and once you turbo the 3.8 it's capable of over 400hp to the wheels at 7 to 8 lbs. of boost. Done right with lo comp pistons we're talking 6 to 700 whp. I'll cut this debate short and use the age old saying, "There is no replacement for displacement." Would it be expensive to turbo the 3.8 GDI correctly, yes. Would it be way more worth it than tinkering with a 2 liter to make what the 3.8 does stock and delivers less efficiently and reliably? God yes. No disrespect, you can make 2.0t's decently quick. You can make 3.8 GDI's set new records in their division at climbing Pikes Peak. Two different kinds of fast.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Two guys I know have about 430whp in turbo 3.8's. But yah thats more than $7k total! On a 2.0 you can put about $3.5k into an upgraded turbo/bolt ons/meth and get nearly identical numbers. Thats all on stock internals. Of couse upgrading the internals you can get close to 1000hp. But thats not worth the price. BTR's SEMA car is bored to a 2.2L and makes more than 800WHP. A simple tune is all I need for my car for it to feel fast.

  • @mrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrk
    @mrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrk 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    How reliable has it been? I'm considering getting a manual 2011 2.0t with 55k miles. A tune can fix the performance issue, but I'm just concerned with the reliability aspect over time.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had no issues with mine. The manuals have had some issues in the first generation. Try to see if there is any record of the transmission being replaced, and see what kind of warranty you can get. Other than some manuals having issues, there isn't anything to worry about.

    I'm about to pull the trigger on a new car. I had a good handful of cars on my list but now I'm down to TWO. Genesis coupe a Scion FRS of course in manual as any car I personally own can't be automatic. However, when it comes to the Genesis I'm still not sure if I should get the 2.0T or the 3.8. The stock turbo actually sounds pretty sexy from the ones I've seen in person so I'm not sure at all. How slow is the 2.0T compared to the 3.8? Is the 2.0T worth ditching the 3.8 or is it not worth it. Also why did they go with a 2.0T instead of something a little bigger and being Turbo? I REALLY don't know which route I want to go. I plan to test drive both but I probably still won't know. I've sat in a FRS like 2 years ago which was a manual and for some reason the gear box felt weird to me like when going from 2nd to 3rd it felt like it was getting hung up on something which I didn't like. I still have yet to sit in a Genesis but I love how the interior of the Genesis looks but I would go up a model to get the GPS. Any thoughts?

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Muilisx If you want a GPS and Manual for the Genesis, the 3.8 Track/Ultimate is the only option. My 2011 2.0T isn't too much slower than my brothers 2011 3.8. Out on VIR, my car maxed at 108mph on the strait, the 3.8 hit 120MPH. So the stock tune with the 2.0T definitely needs to be upgraded so the car can match the speeds of the 3.8. Around town tho, it has plenty of power. Highway pulls, the 3.8 pulls about 2 car lengths ahead, but its not too noticeable. Either way, the Genesis will blow apart the FR-S in a line. I know the FR-S is more nimble with less weight, but I cant get over the lack of power. The Gens handle extremely well and its not worth sacrificing so much power for only slightly better handling. Unless you plan on doing a turbo in the FR-S lol.

    Great points and all true. Especially the trunk button and the tune.
    Ive been meaning to ask. Does the injen intercooler piping void the warranty? I bought mine about 3 months ago. Got the powder coated black ones and im afraid to install due to voiding the warranty.
    3.5 yrs of owning and only 28k? Great resale value lol

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kieryn Wright Technically the pipes won't void the warranty. The dealer would have to prove the pipes caused whatever issue you have. If you ever have an issue that is turbo/engine related. I would put the stock stuff back on so there is no issue.
      Yeh I don't drive much. I ride my bike to campus every day, and I work 2 miles away from my house and 3 miles away from my apt when I'm at school! I get to save my miles for the track and mountains. I even bought this car used with 10k miles lol

  • @MrSlowestD16
    @MrSlowestD16 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are you sure with the tune it will hold 16psi to redline? The behavior you're describing doesn't sound like a tuning feature as much as it does a side effect of cheap internal WG's, which is very common on OEM boosted cars.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +MrSlowestD16 Yes the stock tune is literally designed to peak and then go down hill all the way to redline. The stock bk1 wastegate is actually not too bad. Guys I know who have done custom BTR tunes, the psi graph holds the same level till nearly redline.

    • @MrSlowestD16
      @MrSlowestD16 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Honda4RideRed Wow, wonder what inspired them to do that, then. I see this all the time with OEM cars but it's always due to the limitations of an internal WG. People bump the psi up but it'll always taper. I'm surprised this holds. Can't imagine what they were thinking..

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MrSlowestD16 Well this is Hyundai's first sports car and the tune overall is very conservative and runs very rich. I think the 2013+ holds the psi a lot better with its tune. Apparently my waste gate can hold to the limitations of the stock turbo, so a tune is all I need.

      +AzeOfSpadez haha good one. Being that I could have chosen a manual, its no fault of the car. However, this car does have some of the best automatics that I've driven. When you are in manual mode using the paddles, you are in complete control of the transmission and it will stay in the gear in you want until you shift. Also, doing comparisons with my friends 2.0t manual, we are neck and neck in a straight line. So there is no performance gain in the manual.

    yes, everyone knows back seat space is limited in coups, but that doesnt necessarily mean every coup gets a free pass to be a tin can in the back. I think hes just saying that a bit more headroom would have helped the car be a more enjoyable ride. how is that difficult to comprehend?

      +Honda4RideRed Yeah, the fuel consumption doens't really increase that much in the MT. I have a 2011 2.0T w/ a Stage 1 Set up. Doing around 120 km/h (about 75 MPH), which is well over the speed limit of the highways in my province (100 km/h Limit, 80 - 90 km/h in the parks), I can get around 8.5 - 9.5 L/100 km (24 - 28 MPG). If I'm doing about 95 - 100 km/h (~60 MPH), I have gotten 7.2 L/100 km (32 MPG) at the best, without making any passes or coming out of cruise. So if you're doing anything over 70 MPH in these cars, auto or standard, you're not seeing 30 MPG. That being said, at 60 MPH, for a turbocharged 4 running about 15 - 17 PSI of boost, 19 - 20 peak, 32 MPG is pretty darn good. And now that gas is cheap again, who really cares? :P

    I totally get the point of your video, so forget the haters. But as someone who's looking to into buying this car, I'm surprised that you haven't had any other issues with your car.
    The biggest concerns I have are any mechanical issues or problems you had with the car that needed to be fixed. Did you experience anything like that? Maybe headlight/taillight condensation, bad paint, etc..?
    Also, how is the interior material quality? Do the plastics feel cheap and do they rattle? Do they feel loose? Do they seem like they can last a long time? I'd appreciate your honest feedback. I really like this car but I want to keep it for a long time so relialibilty is important for me, especially the older Gen coupes

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      With my own experience I've had no mechanical issues. The engine and transmission have been fine. One of my tail lights did fill up with some water, but I got that replaced under warranty. Every now and then I'll hear some interior pieces rattle. That seems to be a combination of a bumpy road and loud music. The 2011 has softer touch plastics than the 2010. All the buttons seem pretty solid. However, I have heard people have issues with the first generation manuals, most of the time warranty replaces it. And some people have had problems with the car. But for the most part they seem to be pretty solid with no issues. 3.5 years with the 2.0 and 4 months with our 3.8, both cars are doing great and they are tones of fun!

    I always thought the car had plenty of trunk space (although an awkward entry angle into the trunk due to the lights for larger items). The issues I had:
    The trunk open and the gas cap open are on the same circuit. If the fuse pops, you have to crawl through the back seat and manually pop the gas cap release. Hard and awkward to do at a gas station pump (such a unique pet peeve, and hopefully one you'll never experience).
    Tinny sound system. I thought the sound system was fine when I owned the car, but then I picked up my regal GS with a harmon kardon system and I realize how lacking the gencoupe's system truly was.
    Lack of suspension travel. Number 1 pet peeve. The car's ride just sucks. Stock it sucks, lowered it sucks more. Now I know nag nag nag sports car buy a different car if you want to drive a pillow. There are plenty of examples of good handling cars that are still comfortable (BMW's for example). In fact, the E46 M3 was the baseline for the chassis benchmarking of the genesis coupe, so they should have noted the difference in the two. The fact is, there is just no bump travel (especially in the front) which leads to you driving on the bumpstops far too often. If you live in flat-wonderland florida that's fine, but anywhere with any kind of roads that are less than perfect the car becomes a chore to drive day in and out.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Krautastic I've had no issues with the suspension. It has a good firm ride great for the track, and I think its find even on bumpy roads. The Rigid Collars did help out a lot for big bumps on the highway. I haven't had to manually open the gas cap, and I hope I don't have to lol.

      Honda4RideRed For autocross/track duty the car is an amazing platform (other than the mack truck rear end in autocross, you really have to remember how wide the car is and throttle appropriately to clear cones). Colorado has particularly terrible roads that get worse with any cold/wet weather. The ride was truly awful.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Krautastic Yeh I bet those Colorado roads get pretty bad. I think the Genesis is just a little too big/heavy for the AutoX. I did quite a few during the first year of ownership. • @Justaguyyoutubin
    @Justaguyyoutubin 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    As soon as people start criticizing a car I think its important to consider their motives for buying said car. Its fair to share your personal experiences with a car and ways that the car could improve. I feel as though its unproductive and silly when you start adding trivial details or obvious oversights that YOU didn't consider when purchasing... A button for the trunk? A larger back seat in a sports coupe...? When a car is manufactured the engineers are given a strict budget and they have to allocate money to each part of the car. I can assure you that the trunk and the backseat were the LEAST of their concerns when making a sports coupe in a competitive low tier price bracket. Im finding an issue with MORE and MORE videos that review cars and dont review the car with its primary function in mind. This is exactly why there are many cars. There are many cars because no car is perfect. They are tools and are individually unique to suit the needs of different buyers with different budgets.

    Idk why people are giving you a hard time for this video. You're just nitpicking some things you find inconvenient about the car. It's not like you are telling people the car is shit and you shouldn't buy it.

    I have a 2.5 Camry....and it will do 0-60 in 7.5 seconds which is plenty, I do 35mpg no problem. I have 15cu. ft. of trunk space and more rear leg room than most other sedans.
    why buy a coupe lmfao

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't need that extra space for a full 4 door car, and the handling in the coupe for what I do is a must. Mountain roads and track days.

      It won't handle the same on mountain roads or the track by any means, and that's what I use my car for.

    • @singular9
      @singular9 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honda4RideRed yep and then every girl loves having comfortable rear space vs sitting in a brick.
      No offense I love sports cars, adore them and drool over them. But I don't think I'd ever get one as a daily driver unless it's like an accord coupe.

    • @das2190
      @das2190 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. I recommend this kid buy a minivan for whomever he wants to ride in his back seat. I bought my car for myself. It is a single man's car. Back seat is convenient place to throw my bag when I'm in a hurry.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +das2190 You do realize I am just stating the fact that the rear seats are not good to sit in. And that I consider it a 2+2 seat car, which obviously means the rear seats are more useful for the extra space rather than people. I only have the need for the rear seats for a backpack every now and then and I've only had someone back there 1 or 2 times. You are way over thinking this video. It's a simple video stating that the car might not be perfect for every single potential owner. I'm not saying I want more seats, I'm just saying don't expect to be comfy back there.

    Hyundai Genesis 2.0t sucks. I purchased one at Carmax on West Sahara in Las Vegas, Nevada. With ONLY 77,000 original miles, I putting only 4,000 miles on it, the fucking clutch needs to be replaced already. No fucking way it should have died that fast. No way in hell. Also, what the fuck is with it shaking when slowing from 75-85 miles per hour? This car is a fucking 🍋!!!!!!!

    You complain about back seats in a coupe / fuel efficiency on a rather old 5speed automatic. Stock performance on any Turbo car could be massively improved. Also you say to all of these things they're "not perfect" but also no big of a deal, yet in the title you say "I HATE". That's clickbait and the content is not good imo.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For these videos. Everyone uses the word 'Hate'. It is what it is. But these videos are good consumer advice to point out drawbacks with a car. Some people genuinely will hate some of these features and aspects. So don't take it too literal with me hating the car. View it also as, some people may hate these things. This is an old vid btw lol
