The bk1 2.0 is a dream to work on. A bunch of space in the engine compartment because a 6 cylinder isn't crammed in there. Turbo is easy to get to. Clutch job was easy . it is a very nice car.
I really would have liked to see a BK2 (facelifted) Gen Coupe vs the FR-S. It’s up about 70 hp on the FR-S, but I’d imagine that the FR-S does better in the corners. It would have been interesting to see the difference in heat soak, and overall performance. Besides that, I think if anyone is going for a Gen Coupe 2.0T, they’ll likely go BK2 for the various upgrades over the BK1.
I think this was the best entry level sport car comparison I ever watched, really fun :) . The driving wasn't bad either, you both were about the same level too. The fact that you even put the same tires on both cars... 10/10 would love to be on this track bumper to bumper with both cars 👍
I've owned a 2013 Genesis coupe 3.8 Track AT and currently drive a 2017 BRZ Limited MT. I can tell you 100% the genesis exhaust note was Amazing with a muffler delete and a resonator. Not too loud, Godzilla vibes at WOT but fit and finish wasn't great. Lots of little rattles and vibrations, traction control was a little tricky not exactly confidence inspiring at the limit. But it will drift. Rods are like rubber bands on the 3.8 so no forced induction for you! But I hear the 2.0T can easilly make 300 WHP. Tuning the genesis isn't super easy or at least it was daunting enough that I didn't do it but if I would have I think Bisimoto would have bern the way to go. Great engine if you put in forged rods and pistons but cost is pretty prohibitive for the average Joe. BRZ needs a Tomei Exhaust for that perfect sound. Unequal length headers give a great Subaru rumble and improved mid range eliminating that evil torque dip or Equal length headers give a nice smooth sound and increased flow at higher RPM. Fit and finish is pretty dang good if I do say so myself. Ecutek tuners are the way to go. Openflash is a little cheaper and might seem easier for tuning the 86 but I would only suggest it if you're staying stock or very lightly modifying the car. E85 makes the FA20 very happy as long as the outside temperatures are above 40°f any colder and it's gonna be hard to get her started up. Driving at the limit the twins are super predictable and extremely fun! If you have any drifting or driving skill at all, the 86 or BRZ will make you feel like a pro. For the price, quality of vehicle, and aftermarket support I would suggest the BRZ, FR-S, or GT-86
Plenty of people have boosted 3.8s you have sfr and alphaspeed and btr for tuning and unlike the 86 family you will get noticable gains unless you dropping 5-6k for a turbo or supercharger its still gonna get gapped by v6 mini vans
@@kamikaziblack straight savage. But also true. I'm right around 200 whp on E85 with a header and muffler delete. Supercharger is next on the list though for sure. Slow as it is, its still the most fun car I've ever driven.
I think it depends on what you intend to do with the car. The Genesis' saving grace is the bigger engine especially in the 2nd gen. But it's a fact that it's a heavier, bulkier car. If you just want a sporty daily, but plan to do basic mods I'd recommend the Genesis. It's easier to get in and out of and has a more luxury focused interior when you get the options. Most Genesis owners usually just do basic mods and stop. I've seen about 2 with widebodies in person, and few with serious engine mods. The toyobaru frs on the other hand is more for someone who plans to build. It's much lighter and far more nimble making it a far better platform to build upon. You can dispute that if you want but it has far more aftermarket support for a reason. There's also a good bit of them used by racing teams for various styles. I'm a built > bought kind of person who likes to really make a car their own so I'd opt for the brz anyday if I could only have one. If I had them both, the Genesis would be my daily and the brz would be my weekend warrior with far more money dumped into it.
I'm currently deciding between the genesis, toyobaru, mazda miata, and the nissan 370z. I'm looking for a daily driver to work and that's reliable. I don't plan on racing and don't plan on moding it. Which one should I go for?
@@jstos3675 that's gonna depend on how spirited your driving is and how much you do. Same results, flipped back and forth every morning, we were so evenly matched.

Interesting video. I bought a BR-Z in April for lapping, but it really was between that and the Genesis. I realize after watching this video that both were good choices and whichever one I would've chosen, I would've been happy with.
As a genny owner I feel either pick has its pros and cons ESPECIALLY if your actually using it on a track. Both cars will teach you racing lines and give a a great time going around the track. I know this comment was 3 years ago lol but how has the brz held up?
i know it wouldn't be fair to compare a 3.8 gen coupe to the BRZ but if you want a super rowdy, fun and easy to work on track car i would suggest a bk1 3.8. throw a set of 275's on konigs, straight pipe it, rip out the interior, throw in a sparco seat and wheel and you've got a super rowdy bad ass little machine. if you want something a little more civil and your budget is higher go for the bk2 3.8 ultimate. very comfortable and modern interior and that V6 is like 350hp and sounds even better than the bk1! speaking from experience, i had a 2011 bk1 3.8 and my gf daily drivers her bk2 3.8

Genesis Coupe is more of a GT car, designed to compete against mainly Infiniti G35/G37, V6 Mustang and Camaro. BRZ/FR-S/86 were designed as sports cars from the ground up. However, it’s still nice to see a comparison video like this. I would agree with a lot of people commenting here though, would’ve been a much better comparison if the Genesis Coupe was an R-Spec or Track version, with factory upgraded brakes, suspension and LSD (and a lot less miles lol). A facelifted BK2 Genesis with 270hp 2.0T would also be nice to compare against FR-S/BRZ since it’s still cheaper or about the same price, and since the car is heavier, the extra power would make it a better comparison. One is better handling sports car, other is more comfortable and faster (V6 or ‘13+ 2.0T) grand tourer.

Should’ve used a 2011 2.0 RSpec! I have a 2010 3.8 Grand Touring and a 2013 Rspec 3.8. my GT is actually my favorite one to drive for everyday stuff, but both will slap the shit out off the BRZ/FRS/GT86
Take the Genesis into the shop and do a mini 2-3 part series on fixing its short comings with the help of some sponsors would be good, always liked them when new but the shifter being vague and rev hang had me never consider one. Possibly a short throw and bushings/good trans fluid could bring it around? Suspension possibly BC coilovers or spring/shock combination with sways and bushings? Maybe there is a flash or piggyback that can take care of the rev hang and an intercooler or meth injection could round out the car then back to TMP to show the improvements for a finale? Did dave say the clutch was slipping as well?
This comparison is good but a better and arguably more fair comparison to the FRS would have been a BK2 2.0t since the first year of the FRS was 2012 and a year later they had switched to direct injection on the Genesis. The BK2 is in every way superior to the first gen, especially the Track package. My friend owns a 2010 with a BK2 engine running a GT3076 @ 28 psi and it's a beastly little 4 cyl street car.
For $12,000 - 14,000 you can get a 3.8 v6 gen coupe. The 2013 turbo making 275ish up for the same. Brz is sexy I will say.. but it seems you showed the 2010 turbo to get the numbers closer, not for actually deciding what you might want. Maybe just me (2013 3.8 owner)
Just picked up a genesis coupe 2012 base model for 4800 with a clean title they are becoming very cheap in the used market now already have it on coil overs solid rear diff bushings and have done full tune up. Trying to source a lsd diff to swap and brembos then plan on building the motor but mine doesn’t have rev hang like yours does. There is still an ok after market support for the gc.
I’ve owned both and the gen is has more power, it is heavier than the brz but still a little faster, the brz lacks torque but handles much better. Brz makes for a better drift car
Now compare to a bk2 genesis coupe. That would be more equal in price comparison and closer in age. Though I'm pretty sure it would own a brz....but hey I could be wrong. Let's find out.
Easy, the Subaru 86 It's a WRX with the turbo removed, with the front drive shafts removed, with the rear doors removed, with the rear seat headroom removed, but, and like Kardasian it's a big butt, there is Toyotas direct fuel injection bolted on.
255 width front tires on the BRZ when it came with 215's stock. That's a lot of tire 😅. I had Continental ExtremeContact Sports on my MINI and I LOVED them. I currently have General G-Max RS summer tires on my GTI. General is owned by Continental and some RS's are made in Germany (at least the 225/45/17's are). They had great reviews from customers on Tire Rack so I went for it, around $400 for a set of 4. Long story short I think they're just okay. Should've paid the around $600 for the Continentals. RS's grip but steering response is a little dull and feel numb when temperatures drop below 65F which is just dumb, even for a summer tire. Sidewalls are too soft like the old Continental DW's as well. That said, huge upgrade over all-seasons.
You guys got probably the SLOWEST genesis variant. No Brembos means it's a base model, so no brembo calipers (same ones as STi's), no Torsen diff, non-sporty shocks and swaybars. Also the track package/R-Spec comes with camber bolts; as the understeer is "by design" in the base cars. the track models have the camber kits either dealer installed or in the glovebox with instructions for track use. This "track" test was HEAVILY unfair towards the genesis am afraid.
In fairness to the Genesis Coupe, the BK2 shouodmhave been used as it was released when the BRZ came out. The upgraded eferything in the BK2 Gencoupe are substanial. I had a BK2 3.8L GenCoupe R Spec and still miss it except for that gearbox. Very tail happy with its stock skinny rubber.

Derby City Vandal the bk2 genesis if Fucking ugly!
Bk2 rspec! Brembos 19s stiffer susp more hp better interior!!
Bk2 will have it easily, i think there is already a track test between bk2 and frs on youtube and bk2 takes it
@@petrolhead8851you think the bk2 is ugly? It’s honestly one of the nicest cars I’ve seen
@@petrolhead8851if* lol
I think this was the best entry level sport car comparison I ever watched, really fun :) . The driving wasn't bad either, you both were about the same level too. The fact that you even put the same tires on both cars... 10/10 would love to be on this track bumper to bumper with both cars 👍
I miss my 2016 3.8 R Spec with the manual. Limited slip diff, brembo brakes, nice exhaust note, very powerful.
Thats what i have, follow my Instagram 6ixGenesis
Thats the car i have too, want to trade it in for a 2017 e63s amg Mercedes
Like if you just drive when you have to (work, groceries, errands) or if you do recreational driving too (back roads, mountain passes, cruises)
I'm in TN so we've got the smokies and tail of dragon. I'm more toward cornering for that stuff. But I ACTIVELY go drive that windy roads. If you're not doing any recreational driving, even outside of the track, you might as well go for comfort and take the genesis or 370z. Between those two, I'd opt for the 370z. Be warned on v6's and oil issues
The miata and brz are both good for carving. Autocross, track, backroads, mountain passes, I'd go for those two. Between those two, I'm taking the brz. Be warned on suby engine clearance

@@jstos3675I just bought a 2010 Genesis 3.8 and buddy has a 370z, if you want a comfortable car with performance I’d definitely go with the Geni, it’s a very fun car to drive and it has a much smoother ride than the 370z, in my opinion I really like the look of it over the 370z it has a more higher class look compared to the car every 16-18yo buys
@@dudegust6983 ah ok. Yea I don't like the look of the 370z. It looks like a giant mousepad or doorstopper to me, lol. Is the Genesis a long car? Congrats on getting a Genesis!
I gotta say I'd take the brz over the genesis!
Same here. Performance aside, the BRZ looks miles better!

jjus jjoe Genesis are meh to me, never been a fan of them. I guess that’s just my opinion though
dp and pt the real mvp
The Genesis has a tune, the factory rev limiter is at 6500, which would explain how it was so torquey
Really loving these Head-to-Heads. The on-track commentary really gives it that Best Motoring vibes from the old days.
Brings back good memory. Back in the 80s after dropping my mom to work. Every single morning at 6am, I would get stuck at the lights at V.P & Steels with only me (in a 5sp Z24) and the other car being a Turbo Eagle Talon. Same results, flipped back and forth every morning, we were so evenly matched.
I once drove my friend's 2.0 Genesis home after he bought it. The rev hang was terrible I couldn't ignore it, I couldn't wait to get back to my car.
Who in their right mind would buy a BRZ based on roll on tests which is not what this car is about at all? You picked a non-standard example of a terrible version of the Genesis to compare it against and then barely talked about how the drive between the two compares. I rarely write bad reviews but you guys really earned it.
I’m so happy with my genesis coupe, I got a 3.8 2015 ultimate for only $7500, dude didn’t know what car he had, it’s in pretty much mint condition

Interesting video. I bought a BR-Z in April for lapping, but it really was between that and the Genesis. I realize after watching this video that both were good choices and whichever one I would've chosen, I would've been happy with.
A newer Genesis would have been miles better.
As a genny owner I feel either pick has its pros and cons ESPECIALLY if your actually using it on a track. Both cars will teach you racing lines and give a a great time going around the track. I know this comment was 3 years ago lol but how has the brz held up?
i dig that 1st gen eagle talon in the background.
i know it wouldn't be fair to compare a 3.8 gen coupe to the BRZ but if you want a super rowdy, fun and easy to work on track car i would suggest a bk1 3.8. throw a set of 275's on konigs, straight pipe it, rip out the interior, throw in a sparco seat and wheel and you've got a super rowdy bad ass little machine. if you want something a little more civil and your budget is higher go for the bk2 3.8 ultimate. very comfortable and modern interior and that V6 is like 350hp and sounds even better than the bk1! speaking from experience, i had a 2011 bk1 3.8 and my gf daily drivers her bk2 3.8
Genesis Coupe REV hang is awful!!
Luckily there are a few quick fixes to get rid of it. Best way is a tune and unplugging an extra sensor on the clutch that it goes off (Not the clutch safety switch but another it has).
VERY interested in this clutch sensor. What is it?
@@ariellezen4683 I'm really not sure, but if you look down by the pedal there's 2 sensors. It's the top most one. Doesn't throw a check engine light but it does pop up on my code reader. I forgot what it shows as. No negative effects at all.
This is very good to know. Thank you. Does this apply to both the BK1 and the BK2? Would it be possible to just disconnect this component without getting the tune?
I actually heard rumors that you can definitely knock it out that REV HANG
@@Scott-lo5ep I have a bk2, but I believe it's also bk1. My car cane with a tune but the rev hang was still there (don't think the previous owner opted for that). Unplugging the sensor helped.

I understand why they wouldnt put a 3.8 vs the brz, but they at least should've put a bk2 2.0T against it instead of an almost 10 year old car vs a 3 year old car
BK2 owners should be considering it should’ve been the one in this stock-ish comparison.
Nah, he just really picked the ugliest genesis ever lol, i own a 2.0 fully modified and have to say that i would always pick a full modified car that runs smooth and okay, than a wreckedass ugly fucking car that runs fast af like speedy gonzales.
It's been like this since the launch of both cars with the fan bases. You could put a Subaru badge on a fucking washing machine and people would take it to meets.
Out of those two I would pick the brz. No turbos to worry about. Brz will probably the cheaper car to track. Ofcourse I would like to see the rx8 against the brz. My money is on the great handling rx8. Damn what a chasis, cheap a d a few more ponies. Oh and it's cool as hell.
Not a fan of the Genny Coupe but the '15 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 v8 rwd sedan is a helluva bargain.
New project car. Get a 2.0 gennie amd hit up 10fintec for some mods!
Nailed it on the head with aftermarket support. It’s not bad for the bk1 2.0T, but the 3.8 in both generations is... slim.
I have a 2015 3.8 Genesis coupe with the 8 speed auto that I have semi setup for road course action. Tons of fun and not crazy expensive. If you guys ever come to Florida there is a track here called The FIRM, it's a small more technical course like TMP,come visit and I'll let you take my car out for a spin.

The heat soak is real with those first gen 2.0l turbo Genesis's (not sure what the plural is haha). I tracked with a buddy who had one in 98 degree weather at Button Willow. I had a S2000 at the time. His times slowly got worse throughout the day while my times were actually improving. We were in different run groups, but similar timing gear.
Should’ve used a 2011 2.0 RSpec! Completely different car from the base 10-12 2.0
The tighter suspension, brembos, and limited slip differential in the RSpec make the 2.0 a completely different animal. Any GenCoupe that is a RSpec is infinitely better than the base Gen
Base gens are literally a blank slate that have to be modded

Over time the quality of parts shows. The Genesis is a base 2.0T model. If the RSpec I think itd do better with the suspension, brembos, and lsd. BK2 would be even more evident. As is here the shifter is pretty meh. Needs new bushings as such. The BRZ actually seems fairly nice and crisp. Bushings and such head its quality. Overall for a sportscar Id go BRZ.
Love this type of car reviews! Keep these coming!
For $12,000 - 14,000 you can get a 3.8 v6 gen coupe. The 2013 turbo making 275ish up for the same. Brz is sexy I will say.. but it seems you showed the 2010 turbo to get the numbers closer, not for actually deciding what you might want.

Now compare to a bk2 genesis coupe. That would be more equal in price comparison and closer in age. Though I'm pretty sure it would own a brz....but hey I could be wrong. Let's find out.
Before you start I will take the BRZ if you’re talking about the turbo version of the high-end day. LOL love it spell like that
Easy, the Subaru 86
It's a WRX with the turbo removed, with the front drive shafts removed, with the rear doors removed, with the rear seat headroom removed, but, and like Kardasian it's a big butt, there is Toyotas direct fuel injection bolted on.
That said, huge upgrade over all-seasons.
that was fun !
