      I think what you could do if you wanted to balance the game more is change it so that Misses only happen on combos after the first super effective hit and increase in likelihood has the combo continues. And critical hits only happen when attacking not very effectively in and they don’t give you another move they just preserved the piece that attacked.

    • @ImThylacine

      They might not actually have any footing here. You can’t copyright game rules, so using the type chart as a chess modifier is fair game.
      If you publish a version of the game that doesn’t use Pokémon designs, there’s no other connection to Pokémon that a suit can be based on (that I can tell).

    Honestly depending on the meta Bug might be a okay type to use, it’s resistances to fighting and ground makes it a decent defensive type against those pieces.
    Similarly, Ice I think has some value as a Queen, being effective against a good number of types and it’s lack of resistances isn’t as big a deal for reasons you mentioned in the video.
    In short, I don’t think the two types are completely useless, they do have some value.

    I dunno about crits, but misses sound like a mechanic useful to potentially stop others from chewing through 3 pieces to get a king. It's risky, as your queen could get stuck halfway through. Shame it affects regular play though.

    • @ImThylacine
      @ImThylacine ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Perhaps, to simulate the larger miss chances of higher-damage moves, miss chance could start low (or even at 0%) and increase every turn once you move more than once in a row, like Protect’s fail chance lol

    Now add gimmicks like Megas, Dynamax, and Terastallization
    Megas: At the start of the game, you pick one Mega Pokémon. That Pokémon’ not very effective hits become neutral, and super effective hits against it also become neutral.
    Dynamax; The piece now takes up a 3x3 square centered on itself, attacking any Pokémon within the square that aren’t yours. However, it can still be attacked in that area. When a Dynamax Pokémon would die, it just goes back to normal.
    Terastallization; At any time during your turn, once per game, you can switch the typing of one of your pokemon until the end of the game.

    I'm nearly undefeated with an Ice queen. People tend to use dragon as one of the key protectors of the king, which lets an ice queen sweep in; but it's also effective against ground, which often lets you position against that (likely offensive) piece. People also often put grass on a key pawn due to its resistance to both ground and water. It's probably not all THAT good though, and I'm probably just winning due to being good at chess in the first place, but it's still a solid choice (probably next best after the 3 meta picks of ground/fire/water).

    I played pokemon chess a lot for a few days when it came out. Personal favourite pet picks of mine were steel and rock queens - I found that if your queen resisted their kings type, then you could really exploit that and just chase their king around the board with your queen and they'd be completely unable to take you (making attacks on the king with your queen brutal), whereas the other piece matchups didn't matter so much as you can just escape from their attacks (and even pawn structure should be designed not to let common queens combo into it). I also anticipated a lot of flying type kings to counter the powerful ground type queen - so by choosing steel or rock queen, you can exploit them massively. Rock retained more combo potential, while Steel's better resistance spread made it a safer choice.

    How to fix Crits/Misses;
    -Give a piece higher miss chances depending on what piece it is. Make pawns never miss, and make queens only 60% accurate. This makes it so a piece’s value is dictated by its typing, and what the actual piece is becomes an interesting risk/reward side mechanic, like choosing the move of your Pokémon.
    -Make the weaker types (bug, ice, etc) have a higher crit chance to make them worth using. Steel would rarely crit, and normal, bug and ice would be monsters with a 35 percent crit chance. Again, more risk reward.

    Its a SRPG where you have a set of trainers battle it out chess-like with different objectives. Yes, sometimes is as easy as kill the king, but more often than not is capture the flag. Normally, winning on turn 2 as black is the fastest win in chess due to checkmate not requiring taking the king. This means a game where you must TAKE the king would require winning on turn 3 as black at the earliest. However, in Pokemon Chess, you can win on turn 2 as white.
    White: E4
    Black: H5 (likely with a piece that resists white's queen, if played seriously)
    White: QxH5! (crit), QxE7! (crit or SE), QxE8# (checkmate)

During that team's turn, each piece that was chosen by a player can move, all of them, but the captain of the team moves them and does NOT need to move all of them. The captain can only move pieces that his team chose and can move as many of them as he wants. The turn has a time limit so players need to think fast. I'm thinking 30 seconds to make a move or you lose the turn.

    Blaine: "I'm assuming you know the basic of chess and how the pieces move, because it'd be EMBARRASSING if you didn't."
    Also Blaine: "Just to be safe: if your king gets captured, you lose."
    Gosh, that DID look embarrassing, especially since you're the one MAKING the video about chess and you don't know that in chess, a king is never captured. The game ends when one player is in checkmate, a state where the king wouldn't be able to avoid capture next turn, a turn which will therefore never come.

      Although I admit to lacking chess vocabulary, I very much linked the concept of capturing of the king to a state of checkmate for simplicity.
      Also, Pokemon Chess doesn't have checkmate mechanics, so that also skewed my thought process.
      TH-camrs read their comments more than you think. Try sounding less needlessly condescending next time if you're looking for a meaningful conversation.

    I also made an ACTUAL STALL TEAM by using a DEAGON TYPE QUEEN. it’s made to home in on a fairy pawn, then spam nothing while your opponent is forced to unravel their own defenses. it fills the front line with good reactive types to prevent any penetration
