I swear Jacob's godlike normal RNG and Cybertron's usual hellish RNG came together for a split second and created some kind of singularity of fortune that wound up reversing their fates.
Actually, Normal type is a really good type for pawns. In normal Pokemon, resistances are important to allow switch-in and resisting STAB attacks, which makes Normal a bad type defensively due to its only resistance being Ghost. But with these Chess rules, there's more importance in not having weaknesses since these are what opens up combos into potential instant-losses. So Normal type with its only weakness being Fighting is actually really good to prevent these combos from happening.
Put a Normal pawn in front of your King, and make your King Ghost. The only type that can combo off that pawn is Fighting, but your King is also immune to Fighting, so that's one way to make good use of the type matchups and blocks all possibilities of combo-capturing your King off that pawn. Except crits :')
@@DaikoruArtwinThat would only work if you were defending from a rook or a queen. None of the other pieces would ever be coming at the king head on, and even the rook and queen would still have the option of going around the sides.

16:30 No, why take the rook and promote, risking a miss... when he could simply have the move step forward one step, promote, and even if rook takes it, the bishop punished (promoted pawn is a bait). And then if it's promoted into a queen or rook, black will lose if it moves above the fighting bishop, since the rook can just take it and then the king (super-effective). That way black king must move up (up+right is still seen by bishop). But moving up there is still going to lose since if it promoted to a queen (rook can't do this) it will simply take the fighting bishop and then king, like in that prior mentioned case.
I really think that the whole super effective move again thing should be limited to just a max of one free per turn, as it just snowballs way too easily as current. It would also make the queens less busted and make you have to think more about how deep you want to go in with a piece.
I haven't played this yet, but I imagine if people got good at it they'd quickly learn to play around multiple multiple-piece capture chains. That's what people do in Draughts, after all. It does look like it needs some balancing to reduce the power of the queen though. Here's some ideas: -Allow people to add multiple of the same type. That way, you can assign the best offensive type (perhaps not ice in this version) to more than just the queen, and can also make better defensive pawn walls to hold the queen off. -Add restrictions to which pieces can do super effective takes. One idea would be to let them take pawns/pieces that traditionally rank equal, higher, or one weaker than itself. That way, pawns and knights can take everything, bishops can take everything except pawns, etc. This would not only make the queen less OP but possibly more balanced than regular chess.
You could give evolution an RNG (10%?) chance of occurring whenever a pawn captures another pawn/piece, so a pawn/pokémon can suddenly evolve at any point in the game. But if you don't want the board to get filled with queens you can also RNG the type of piece it evolves into, knight, rook, bishop and rarely a queen.

this video was so entertaining omg. the concept itself is really creative and a lot of fun to watch but on top of that the editing and commentary from the underdogs as well as zack's individual comments just made it a blast to watch. would love to see more of this!!!
A neat rule would be kings can ONLY be killed by super effective moves, (All kings are wonder guarded) but specifically from queens, because 90% of games with knowledgeable players are finished in 5 seconds with the queen.
Optimal layout King - Steel Queen - Fighting or Ground Rook - (Fighting or Ground) and Rock Knight - Fire and Ice Bishop - Ghost and fairy Pawns - Normal, Psychic, Dark, Flying, Electric, Water, Poison and (Grass or Bug depending on opposing queen) Untaken - Dragon, it doesn't have enough of anything to be useful
Alpharad is one of the luckiest Pokémon players as you see in his videos with Jaiden while Cybertron is one of the unluckiest and Cybertron wins because of luck.
I feel like a good idea would be to make the king take multiple hits to takedown, like the king has six HP, and a normal attack does two, a not very effective attack does one, and a super effective does four. That would probably slow down the game so that matches last longer than your nights out with Maddie.

This is one of the best videos ive ever seen. PLEASE more pokemon chess. This is amazing.
Wait 9:10 you can castle in chess if your in check
this video was so entertaining omg. the concept itself is really creative and a lot of fun to watch but on top of that the editing and commentary from the underdogs as well as zack's individual comments just made it a blast to watch. would love to see more of this!!!
14:48 THE WAY THE CAMERA SLOWLY PANNED UP, I CAN'T 😂
If there was ever a war in the Pokémon World this is how it would play out... Go Poké-Army!!
A neat rule would be kings can ONLY be killed by super effective moves, (All kings are wonder guarded) but specifically from queens, because 90% of games with knowledgeable players are finished in 5 seconds with the queen.
Optimal layout
King - Steel
Queen - Fighting or Ground
Rook - (Fighting or Ground) and Rock
Knight - Fire and Ice
Bishop - Ghost and fairy
Pawns - Normal, Psychic, Dark, Flying, Electric, Water, Poison and (Grass or Bug depending on opposing queen)
Untaken - Dragon, it doesn't have enough of anything to be useful
The mudkip piece should be able to move where ever he wants because mudkip is undefeatable
That final was so cruel pitting the luckiest bastard with the unluckiest pokemon pro
with the cuts to everyone reacting to the crit it feels almost like a real chess tournament with pros and commentators reacting, just a bit more scuffed
