I have multiple autoimmune diseases. I wish people would listen to him. I got so frustrated with that horrible woman. He described my life. I was literally told throughout my childhood, over and over again, that I had no right to an opinion and no right to be heard. This continued into adulthood, to the extent that my brother would clamp his hand over my mouth to stop me speaking, even in my 50s. My rheumatologist once asked me if I was stressed, but how can you unburden yourself of decades of abuse in a ten-minute appointment?

It is STUNNING to listen to the frustrated argumentativeness of the interviewer here, as well as Dr. Maté’s patience! I wish people could just listen and understand without panicking because their world view is crumbling. I have 2 older siblings who have shut me out for sharing one of his videos with them in a group text. That was 3 weeks ago today. I know factually they received my text, but are now “ghosting” me. It baffles me that there are still people who want to close their eyes and ears on matters that nowadays even a layman understands, and you wouldn't expect that from a public person interviewing one of the greatest experts in the field of trauma in the world - the other one, in my opinion, being Dr. Bessel van der Kolk.
She should sit for an hour or two together with me, and I would explain to her how it feels to deal with the consequences of childhood trauma despite the fact of being well informed, open minded and having the willpower and the absolute trust that I'll manage to get out of this hell on my own. Maybe I could show her the list of 27+ symptoms I've been dealing with in my mature age, despite having been a powerhouse in my youth, just before the suppressed memories came back.
To be honest, I envy her for having the opportunity of discussing with Dr. Maté. What a pity, she apparently didn't realize the chance given to her - or who knows, maybe this conversation will help her understand where her aggressiveness comes from?

What an incredibly rude and aggressive interviewer....I felt very embarrassed she was allowed to interview Gabor Mate. The link between autoimmunity and trauma is well documented and historical.... Example - the entire text of The Body Keeps Score by Bessel van der Kolk and the references within it.... Clearly this woman has no experience of illness and trauma, no manners to speak of and no knowledge of the literature and with breath taking ignorance of how the medical profession actual functions - it's a single paradigm and a reductionist one...

She must defend her position....looking and feeling any of it shows how most of humanity shields themselves from pain. Empathy is what I feel after the smoke clears and I let go of feelings of wanting to protect Dr. Gabor......SHE IS UNAWARE. I protect......this is what I did a lot. Dr. Gabor can and does protect himself. Dr. Gabor is a competent man. I have slowly through my work and insight let go of the need I had to protect others. Brilliant!!! I am sobhappy Gabor had this interview with such a rigid hoast. She was like a methaphor of the rigid View and paradigma of the classical medical approach and grave Gabor the opportunity to come up with all needed arguments to convince even the most skeptical people that trauma, and consequently splitting, separating the mind from the body and supressing emotions ( in order tonprotect ourselves from the unbareable pain) can cause autoimune diseases. The actual medical approach treats the simptoms and not the real cause. And yes, considering how profitabile IT is, there is no interest in healing people for good.

      Hate teachers! Hate school!
I was the only non white student at my school & no one stopped the r@cism I experienced or the constant bullying/harassment; if anything it was perpetrated by teaches also- someone made a rumour that I made “magic 🍃brownies” in my food class, due to me being half Jamaican, & I nearly got kicked out of school as they just believed it! I had to go to my food teacher, the assistant & then they contacted THE EXAMINER (as it was an exam) who all agreed with my Mum & I that they smelt NOTHING!!! Because I did NOTHING!! It wasn’t true!
I would be punish if I did anything or defended myself- to be honest even if I wasn’t doing anything; I spent 95% of one of my school years with no break or lunch times & I had to sit on the floor next to my teachers desk, while everyone else looked down on me- due to 2 weeks into that year she heard someone laugh, during art, & blamed me; then I never got the privilege of a chair or desk again. That’s until I went on a 3 month hunger strike half way through the year & the headteacher let me sit in his office so I could have lunch. I was also actively humiliated by teachers who would make all the kids join in & laugh at me. When I was jumped by several people at 12 (15-16 yr olds) they were going to permanently kick me out of school (now I know the reason I manage to defend myself is due to that “disabled strength” 😅). My Mum threatened to go to the papers & I was allowed to stay in school. I’ve lost count how many times they banned my Mum from my school because she turned up or called going mad (she did threaten to beat a few teachers up though😅). At 14 I contacted the governors of my school & the head of education asking for a meeting with them & some of the teachers I’d collected proof on- I had to go alone. Though I won it didn’t help, instead they found every reason to keep me out & send me home (it took me 3hrs to get home) & when I expressed to them that it was like they were “trying to ruin my education”, I was told “you don’t need to be here to get us good grades”. I was also told “children don’t have human rights”. I have over 40 different qualifications & was considered exceptionally gifted- which meant in the beginning I had to prove I wasn’t cheating by being monitored due to getting 99-100% in everything). My nickname in my family is Google. Now I think the 1 nice teacher 💚 was right- I intimidated them; but it’s still left me traumatised.
I also worked in a school (thought it might help me heal) for over 2 years & it was horrible because of the teachers! 2 were actually really nice to be fair but, for example, a couple at least would lie about me if I didn’t do what they wanted (despite it not being in my job description); I was also laid off without any notice, learned I had been unknowingly training my replacement & they deducted money from my last pay check, taking over half, & deleted my contract (which was online) before they did it- so I couldn’t check the terms; because I swore everything taken was included & I wouldn’t be charged but I had no proof (learnt a lesson).
I could tell you an abundance of horrendous stories of all I experienced in the education system. It was/is definitely a catalyst to all I struggle with today- on top of being late diagnosed.
I also have trauma from the medical field as I was chronically sick from near birth, due to multiple ailments (that I’ve spent many years healing in to adulthood), so I spent a lot of my earlier life being poked & prodded, in hospital (to the extent I had my own toys left there for when I would inevitably return); woken up to being stripped & st@bbed (without my permission) all throughout the night & day (even @ 13- so awkward waking up realising your b⭕️⭕️bies are out & there like 8+ medical students staring & touching you). Again, many stories… but if I’m honest there isn’t a area of life that was ever stable.
My life’s been so wild (you’d never know it though meeting me) that the few times I have told someone even 10% they don’t know how to handle it. I’ve had multiple counsellors, doctors & psychologists tell me “I’m pretty so focus on that”; to “come back when I know how to fix myself”; straight up start crying & saying “I don’t know how 5 adult would deal with that let alone a child”- then they leave me; say they need to refer me to someone more qualified or knowledgeable & it’s so far never happened. Turns out I got a couple diagnoses at 20-21 but didn’t find out about them until I was nearly 27! I could of been getting help that whole time! So here I am now, currently, trying to fight again.
Sorry, I didn’t intend for this to be so long, I just kind of started to ramble! Though I only wanted to reply briefly to explain I understand & it nice to come across someone else who understands (& is around the same age); but at the same time it also sucks to hear you’ve been through such trauma also & I’m truly sorry 💚
Don’t want to make this too long so I’m going to end it by wishing you, & all who may read this, a lovely day/night/life❣️
      Peace ☮️ in & out ✌️

The man is so insightful and thinking about what I have learned in studying to become a counsellor plus my observations and experiences with others that I am in total agreement with Dr Gabor. The mind is linked to the body and thoughts affect feelings and impact your mental, emotional and physical health. So many people never get to discuss their trauma or pain and suffering so where is the release and outlet for that. A trouble shared can really be trouble halved. It takes time but it can help significantly and make a difference.

I developed fibromyalgia two months after being sexually assault. I remember when i was being sexually assaulted, my body shot down. I couldn't move or think. It's like my mind was dissociating from my body. After the abuse, I've never addressed the issue. I moved on with my life, acted like nothing happened. Until i started to get sick 2 months later.

I know a lot of people that seem to feel personally threatened by what he is saying, and her defensive aggression shows that she's not willing to listen to anything he says, and probably speaks of her own unresolved 'stuff'. Desperately sad that much of the medical profession and even therapists are the same. WOW!!! This chick needs a good proctologist to remove that great big stick. Sounds like she feels threatened and intimidated by the truth and compassionate raw honesty that likely applies to her as much as to the rest of us. Good grief, I couldn't believe how disrespectful, dismissive, and downright biyotchy she was being. Kind of makes me wonder how stressed out her kids, partner, family are, if she has any. Sheesh, woman, get some therapy on being part of human-kind and maybe take a good, long look in the mirror. Geez. Kudos to Dr. Mate for being so truly and genuinely authentically human and kind to her while untwisting her words and addressing her crap. After his 3rd major setback, I shut down emotionally.
I sobbed my heart out everyday.
Then my own health started to suffer....I had severe gastritis; facial nerve pain; body numbness and debilitating depression.
After being hospitalized with a nervous breakdown, my doctor ordered blood work which came back positive for an autoimmune disease.
I was put on a different depression medication, had bi-weekly counseling and started journaling.
4 months later, I was retested and my body was cleared of antibodies.

This interviewer channels the collective consciousness that is confused and traumatized about blame&responsibility.
Here it how the healthy setup looks:
Nobody is to blame for what comes down to "being born"
Everybody is actually responsible for everything. that does not mean they have the immediate answer.
"IF" anyone at all is to blame, it is always oneself. FoR 'allowing' it to happen. Anyone who points a finger is pointing three fingers back at themselves. For power and responsibility are the same. To feel responsible is to call in empowerment. And most people are afraid of power. They would rather be weak and "innocent"... understandably, yet unrespectable.
To be a victim isn't a virtue - doesn't make you right. neither does shifting hurt onto another.
People need a healthy relationship with the image of power.

I'm sorry to hear about your difficulties, and I appreciate you sharing your story with us. You've clearly been through a lot, and I can only imagine how difficult it must have been. Recurrent shingles and thyroid problems are not easy to deal with. First and foremost, it is important that you keep close communication with your healthcare professional in order to manage chronic health concerns. They are able to provide you specific advice and treatment alternatives to help you live a better life. In addition to medical therapy, I would suggest that you look into holistic alternatives to supplement your treatment, such as stress reduction techniques, a well-balanced diet, and being physically active to the best of your abilities. Connecting with support groups or online communities where you can discover empathy, advice, and shared experiences from people who have had similar issues may also be helpful. Remember that you are not alone on this journey, and there are others who are concerned about your well-being. Keep your spirits up, and please share any updates or questions you may have along the process. We are here to help you.💕

I don't understand why this interviewer was so combative and kept hyperbolising what he said.
I'm currently experiencing an autoimmune flareup, and this video has opened my eyes to how I have been struggling with stress and self view at the moment. A lot of things lately have brought up issues related to my childhood trauma and the past few months have seen me experience back to back symptoms - the latest being autoimmune hives which usually are gone within a week or two max but have been sticking around. Funnily enough, now that I think about it, I had a couple days where I did manage to decrease my stress and they started to clear up but they came back with a vengeance when it spiked again.
This discussion also makes me wonder about the link between autoimmune conditions and gender. It's well known that they are more prevalent in women, and I do wonder if the ways that women internalise stress and suppress emotions, and especially seem more inclined to result to people pleasing, is why the rates are so much higher. As opposed to men who might find other ways to let out their negative emotions, which may also be harmful but not so much suppressive (I'm thinking physical violence, etc.)
Even without diving into research, it doesn't take much to consider these things and see that the link he's talking about is obviously plausible.

Lastly, can you not add captions to your videos please? I find it very difficult to understand/process what is happening on screen and hearing what is being said. The option to turn on/off subtitles should be available to everyone & is a feature on youtube. Thank you!

Dr. Mate changed my life. I'm so thankful for him. Well-wishes to you, Jae.
And, as for the captions in the video, not only are they tacky and distracting, whoever transcribed them made multiple mistakes when doing so.

    Childhood maybe ??

This woman needs to read Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers or listen to Stress and the Body by Robert Sapolsky. There’s tons of research on this.

This interviewer is so aggressive and argumentative! Talk about a closed-minded individual. Everything is “but, but…”
She literally puts words in his mouth and argues points that he didn’t even make.

See my comment above. I agree and compared to the hateful stuff that was spewed at Gabor by people in England she was tame.

She probably has someone telling her stuff in her ears, the journalist profession is a lot of provocation, to get a reaction out of you, to nake headlines, spice things up, to create a debate or push an agenda...very stupid ofc lol
Why not ask in order to understand more or learn more?
In u.k. they take things very very seriously as well, this is typical british way of interrogating, it very blunt & square, formal

I remember being interviewed by this woman years ago. I recognise her voice. We were talking about a social enterprise restaurant that gave profits to help underprivileged families - she started berating me with questions like “aren’t you making diners feel guilty about spending money”?!?!?
I remember being like wtf? This woman’s thinking is so distorted and seemingly so against compassion, any understanding of what compassion is or the importance of it!
I pray someone truly loving enters her life soon and gives her the compassion she desperately needs 😢

The interviewer seems out to make Dr Mate wrong to the listeners, best tro promote interviews where the interviewer understand childhood trauma. This woman seems to blame the victims for their problems, who went through serious childhood neglect, and abuse.

I disagree. These are exactly the kind of interviews that need to be shared, along with others where the interviewer is less skeptical. Her questions mirror how many think sadly which allowed Gabor to put into clear words an important alternate perspective and how much compassion needs to be had. Also, remember that Scotland is close to England where many came down so unfairly hard on Gabor for his interview with Prince Harry. They were viciously judgmental, critical and filled with hate. Imagine how different things could have been for Harry, the relationship with his father, brother and consequently family relationships if Charles had been able to put his arm around his son, listened and had some compassion for Harry’s experiences and feelings through such difficult traumas where he had to cope completely alone.

Eeek ! Please do not tar Scotland with the same brush just because we are an adjacent country!
Sally is NOT the voice of Scotland!
Sally's tone was not, I think, at all appropriate for this interview! Horrible actually. Her producer's instructions maybe?
Gabor Mate is highly respected by all the folk I know.
And, even though the royal family is of much less interest to folk in Scotland, I think there is alot of sympathy and empathy for Harry.
But you are right, crass interviews can also serve to give an opportunity to challenge ignorant ideas.
I really appreciated Dr Mate taking the opportunity to counter with the fact that alot of people do not choose to become adicts for example.
And in spite of the interviewer's style, this was yet another very insightful and illuminating interview given by Gabor Mate! @@jenp5759

He handled this interview so well. It's like she's not trying to understand where he's coming from but actively trying to undermine his ideas from the go. But his absolute confidence overcomes all of that. I'm not sure why she would want to go into such an interview with this kind of attitude.

Ya, who is she really talking to?!
Gabor Mate is so worthwhile and what a help he is to so many that have autoimmune conditions or are slowly coming out of our denial that maybe we aren't as emotionally healthy as we thought. One of my biggest helpers is a Doc of Oriental Medicine, Functional Practitioner as half of the 1.5 hr appt time is more like talk therapy. She treats me as a whole person. compartmentalized.

Reminding me of what Scottish people are generally like 😢 This idea of blame and shame and punishment for suffering people is so archaic. I have no idea why she is so defensive and hostile.
The way she says “you think this” when he is speaking from the academic evidence base
