Yes great shadows. There's one area in the Medical Pavilion where they show the giant shadow of the doctor chopping away. I'm thinking the devs took inspiration from old 50's horror movies. Frankenstein comes to mind.
They also have 3 different stages of animations as you upgrade them, for example Jacks hand gets more charred and necrotic as you upgrade Incinerate, his hand becomes more frostbitten and covered in Ice layers as you Upgrade Winters Blast. Etc.
Fun Fact: The Circus of Values clown is voiced by creative director Ken Levine. The clown itself is from an old fruit crate label of Jo Jo Melons, which is so old that by then the copyright had expired.
17:30 ABSOLUTELY. There's no way you can gun someone down while they're in the middle of saying "I will lay my vengeance-" and NOT make a sarcastic remark. Physically impossible.
This was a horror game for me in 7th or 8th grade when it first came out. In the game, I was crouched 95% of the time. Appreciate you playing it again, John.
I appreciate that they named the gene-altering stuff plasmids, after the DNA rings bacteria use to trade genes. It makes the game just that tiny bit more plausible. Kind of.
I loved this game when it first came out. I was a teenager. I hardly remember anything from it but it gave me a lasting positive impression. I'm happy to see you replaying it, Jon. :)
You uploaded this as I was watching the first part! Was delighted to see this pop up as soon as I closed that vid. So excited for this playthrough. Also: happy father's day, John! 😄
Bioshock released during a time where I feel like most gamers had not played an FPS before. There were many first person games at the time, but unless you were playing something like Call of Duty or you were a part of a particular audience into old school arena shooters like Wolfenstein/Quake/Unreal etc. you probably had never played a solid FPS in your life. I think it's understandable why a lot of people had trouble with Bioshock even on Normal difficulty, but after coming back to it with more FPS experience they find it is extremely easy and forgiving. There's a reason the Hard difficulty has a tag that states "for people who are experience with FPS"; The normal difficulty is essentially designed as baby's first FPS.
38:54 Gotta admit, a hubristic monument to Objectivism is the last place I'd've expected to institute a wealth cap, but good for them, I guess. Also the way John says "I'm FULL OF MONEY?!" got me right in the funny bones.
Random thought, but I want to see someone draw fanart of you as the Hacker from Cyberchase. He did some hacking from what I can remember, and I really like the hacking minigame. I can't believe they gave you a cap on money. It's cool how you have a Pokémon Snap mechanic for mutants.
The wrench with all buffs is probably the best weapon in the game. It's cool to see more of the weapons in this playthrough since I always just do it with ol wrenchy.
I don’t know why but seeing you play Bioshock part 1 made me want to play it as well. I think I got 90% done with that big area you were in during the last part and my game froze. I thought I would load back into the game at one of the chamber pods but instead it booted me to the beginning of the map. I think I’ll continue watching you play until my grudge is gone
Me too! Seeing him play this is making me want to replay it as well. I didn't really know what I was doing the first time so I'm sure I can 100% it the second time around
It's silly, but I feel bad about killing the "I'm lonely!" guy. Also: Confession: To this day I have no idea what the bandito dispenser yells. I just remember my friends and I all assuming it's either random noise or something offensive.
the funny thing about replaying games that you thought were hard it's that you discover you actually were bad at video games 😁 happened to me several times
43:40 the code is in one of the audiologs. You must take several pictures for every splice to get more damage (+ and then ++), so keep taking photos on splices you already completed the research once. And yes, you should have played it on a harder difficulty level.
Non-invasive question: Do you consider playing the EldenRing DLC or are you done with it / want to enjoy it on your own without backseating? Just curious, thanks for your time :)
I wrote about this in the recent Community post, but I'm not planning on playing it day 1 or anything. If there are videos it will be in July, I've got some things happening at the end of the month I have to prioritize unfortunately!
Yeah whenever I played Bioshock after a while I only played on max difficulty. Not out of some “it’s the only way to play it” brag but because I went for the “no vitachambers on hardest” trophy, and it honestly wasn’t that much harder imo. And when you get every level memorized, when someone will show up where, it’s a snap. Play how you want, though
@@VainSick I think John said he played it a decade ago, and I first heard about the game 12 years ago myself....never realized it was released in 2007. Dang
I feel like it's the opposite, you may be desensitized to it because so many indie games have taken ideas from it over the years. For being a game from the early 2000s I think it's aged remarkably well (minus some clunky shooting mechanics, but it's not so bad compared to some modern games).
Happy first Father's Day!
Missed opportunity for a big daddy joke
I love the use of shadows in this game to introduce things before experiencing them in a fight.

I love the hand effects each plasmid has, the electrical current, the fire, the others we haven’t seen yet, they add such a cool touch

“I’m just lonely. I’m lonely.”
I’m doing fine, thanks for asking, how-
Oh.
17:30 ABSOLUTELY. There's no way you can gun someone down while they're in the middle of saying "I will lay my vengeance-" and NOT make a sarcastic remark. Physically impossible.
My ultimate plasmid for the first 2 games is Insect Swarm! I love watching the Splicers freak out and scream "not the bees" lmao
I don't even like bugs but insect swarm was definitely my favorite

Now that John’s a father, his interactions with the little ones makes me 😭😭😭❤️

I unironically love watching you solve the hacking puzzles
The machines voice actor is the developer.
He trolled the entire game
Another saying that lives rent free in my head; in the D&D movie, when Jarnathan gets tackled out of the window, "OH JARNATHAN!!"
That's a good one lmao
You’re the King, and everybody knows it.

So happy to see you replaying this :)
The spider slicer ladies have always been kinda freaky to me, but you handled them so calmly!
So happy to see John (re)playing this! Huge nostalgia game for me :)

Rosenberg trying to warn Ryan about eugenics and being completely ignored is a level of realism I was not prepared for. Dang.
41:50 - So glad Bioshock introduced this song to me back in the day.

This is so GOOD! Thanks for the playthrough! I hope you play the others too, bioshock2 is often overlooked but the game is very fun :]
Wow I made it early! Thank you John for playing this after so many years.

In the last video in the Medical Pavilion area, " just jump through the damn window john" 😅

Hi John!! Super excited about this series ❤
It's silly, but I feel bad about killing the "I'm lonely!" guy.
Also: Confession: To this day I have no idea what the bandito dispenser yells. I just remember my friends and I all assuming it's either random noise or something offensive.
Excited for this play through! It’s fun to see an older game and its mechanics in the modern age
So hyped for this
I love this game so much
J. Jonah Jameson vc I WANDER PHOTOS OF SPIDER-SPLICER!

Loving this playthrough.
Awesome thanks John 😊 😊 😊 😊 😊 😊 😊 😊

Crazy take. mAYBE hard mode would be more entertaining after all

@@JohnTwolfe Thanks for the answer, much appreciated! It was a glorious playthrough, if it happens, I will be in:)
John if you have time is this great game that you're definitely going to love still wals the Deep
Leggo johnathan
Great vid John! Do you think you'll ever replay Bioshock 3 I remember watching you play it a few years ago.
Yeah whenever I played Bioshock after a while I only played on max difficulty. yes please up the difficulty
I think you can change the difficulty settings whenever you want! Or maybe I’m thinking of a different game
nice
Yaaaayyyyy
21:50 Will there also be Pwn grenades?
Question; mid game can John change the difficulty in this game?
yes, there's actually a funny moment in part 3 where I do just that!
What if you did the hacks from end to beginning?
(I just don't want to seem stupid, but he hasn't posted the finale of bg3, right? I'll feel so stupid if he did.)
He has, in fact.
Arrgg
Some audio issues with both this and the first video.
Did you read the pinned comment on part 1?
It's weird to think this was a cutting edge game....now it only looks like a well made indie game.
Hmmmmmmmmmmm nope
Bioshock came out in 2007. That is 17 years ago and it still looks and plays fine.
Yeah it’s been almost two decades 😂, ofc graphics have gone a long way
