  • This is a TV station copy they gave my father and those who attended the event. I own no rights to this. It is such a heart warming service for a country music legend. So I
Just posted the old video of my dads ( Dallas Howard ) that resurfaced. If anyone on here knew or knows of Merle from back in 2005. There 5 clips on TH-cam this is pt. 3

Merle was Hank Jr.'s best friend and right hand man. He was with Hank his entire life, from when Hank was a child, through the bad times and his mountain accident, and eventually Hank hired him as his manager. Merle is not forgotten.

Tells me that's what happen to the Industry too. When these great writers leave us, they also take their great writing skills with them. Shame..

Beautiful tribute from Merle's grand daughters to their " Daddy Merle,"and Hank Jr had me tears, and Brenda Lee's words were so poinent and described Merle perfectly.

Merle hired me to work with Jr. in 1987. Great story teller & always looked out for Hank Jr. I miss Merle a lot, his grave in Hendersonville is typical Merle, big ,loud & funny!

Didn’t know much about him. What an inspiring man. The type to emulate, be that positive force and promoter for those around you.
So many years later, still not in the Country Music Hall of Fame?

Merle was a great rudder for Hank. They were good for each other in my opinion. They complimented each other to the top.

I was backstage at a HWJ and CDB concert in Lafayette , La and while Hank was on stage merle sat next to me on some amp cases and he talked to me like I was an old friend. He talked about the elk tearing fences down in the Big Hole, Hanks ranches up in MT. And even how they where flying back to Paris TN right after the show ended. The man looked me straight in the eye while he told me the stories. I gave him a Cajun Band “ Moe-D Noshitdoe Cap and CD’s. He laughed and said there has to be a story behind that Noshitdoe on this hat. And laughed. I doubt very seriously HWJ looks at any of this, but if any of Merle’s kin folks do: I want to tell you that y’all had a great man around with Merle Kilgore. A class act, not blinded by stardom that he could not treat a regular poor folk working man with true dignity. .

Mark, Rocky loaned me the book “These are my People”, fantastic read. And I challenge any Merle Kilgore fan to go find that book, a great read about the life and times of Merle Kilgore.

He was a 1st cousin to my grandfather, Chester Kilgore. Chester ran moonshine as older teen/ young man, but later on him and Merle had a pretty bad falling out. accused of trying to cash in / mooch from Merle's success. at least that's how it was told to me. Family made it sound like Merle was the bad guy, but myself, I think there was more than a bit of truth to Merle's side of the argument. Never got to meet him, though I was friends and worked with Hank jr's brother-in-law , Paul.
