      @sebastianjost 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Without mayor modifications to how minecraft works this is impossible.
      A sphere or similar shape cannot be mapped to a plane without distortions. Therefor it wouldn't really be a 1:1 scale as some parts would be stretched a lot.
      So you'd really need to build a round earth replica which requires a height limit of about 13 million blocks. Currently the height limit is 256 blocks. The current chunk saving system is very unfit for such a huge height limit. You'd need some sort of 3D chunks instead of a 2D grid system.
      This is possible but the file size would make it incredibly impractical. Depending on the level of detail it would probably be thousands of Terrabytes.

    • @orik737
      @orik737 3 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      @@sebastianjost you must be new here xD. They're building it on a custom map projection in order to avoid distortion. No it can't be mapped perfectly to a rectangular planar map, so they effectively "unfolded" an isocahedron in order to create a realistic projection for the sake of not distorting buildings closer to the poles. The oceans are the only things that are significantly distorted.
      With regard to height limit, they're employing a mod to remove the height limit, so they can properly map altitude.
      No it will never be perfect, but it's damn close all things considered.

    • @ryyichy
      @ryyichy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@sebastianjost there are some distortions. We use dymaxion edited, which projects the earth onto triangles. We use the mod cubic chunks to build millions of blocks below and above the height limit. We use terra121 to avoid having to download the entire world. The mod downloads terrain, road, water data, etc as you load more chunks.

    It was really cool getting to watch you all work so hard on Iceland! It's unfortunate that you probably didn't encounter many, if any historical buildings. The historical architecture is fascinating and reflects how little wood there has been throughout Iceland's history- there was a bunch at first, but the forests were pretty much clear cut to make ships and buildings early on. Wood became such a rarity that it was pretty much considered to be a luxury item and was rarely used in buildings. Instead, stacked stone and thick layers of grass and dirt became the dominant building materials (which produced really cool, inventive house/livestock pen combinations in some cases) that continued the landscape instead of protruding straight up at a 90 degree angle. It's too bad that there aren't really a lot of forested areas in Iceland anymore because of all of the clearcutting throughout history, but it gave us super interesting architecture. (also this might not all be super accurate, I'm just going off of my memory from a research project I did three years ago)
