Among the many things about this film, Kate Hudson is not necessarily known as a great actress by industry standards...but she gave a flawless performance in this film. Easily one of the greatest performances in modern cinematic history.
I submit that she maybe was mentored by her mother for this role, reflecting how William was mentored by Lester Bangs. Goldie Hawn was an icon of the late 60’s so she would know how the role should’ve been played. Just the ramblings of a 53 year old music and 60’s-70s culture fan.

My imaginary friends at 14 (1974) were Donny Osmond and Michael Jackson 😃. Patrick Fugit made this movie for me and deserves more credit for the job he did. I've followed his career to this day. Check out the Vampire movie he did. Low budget but pretty good. Wristcutters ☝. He's played next to impressive list of Mega stars for sure. Not sure what happened to Cameron Crowe. Lost the magic when he lost Nancy Wilson. I heard this story is on stage now. Love this movie
It would be impossible for anyone to watch almost famous and not fall in love with Penny Lane and Kate Hudson. My brother Phil, told me to watch this movie. The title threw me off and made me wonder why. I had appeared in 45 films And that's not even close to being almost famous. But I grew up in the time all these songs were written. And this movie touched my heart. In so many ways.
"There's hope for you yet Russell".. When watching this scene and the ending it gives you the feel there is hope for all of them. Penny didn't want to hear from Russell and she felt that William deserved an apology even more than she did which arguably is true. William had his love of music given to him by his sisters records and lived out his dream of following a band he likes and writing about them in the hopes he could become a rock writer. The immaturity of the band nearly cost him this, especially in Russell who is the bands leader. But this scene is the atonement for the lie. Through his apology, maybe, at least you hope in the future of these characters that maybe he and William can have a friendship, and maybe even he can at least salvage a friendship with Penny. You definitely hope William and Penny would remain growing friends and perhaps more. But the most important thing about this scene is that you can always make the right choice. There is never a wrong time to do the right thing. Loved how they pulled it off. Definitely one of the most underrated movies.
The scene circles back to the one with Lester when Lester tells him he missed rock and roll and rants about how bad it has become. The scene shows that Russell really cares about it and perhaps is a part of "the death rattle".
