Thank you for showing all the processes. It was of great interest to me. Here in Argentina my ASH25 just had it's 3000 hours inspection as well. Thanks for sharing all this great videos.
Hola Santiago, que sorpresa encontrar tu comentario, se ve que el mundo del volovelismo es pequeño hasta en internet! Saludos a la gente de los Caranchos
Stefan, I have such an impression that you personally did probably a half of this inspection and all kinds of works related to it. Is it standard procedure there? I'm asking about it because I have never seen how this 3000 hours inspection looks like. Does your personal work reduces cost of this inspection? Thank you.
I noticed that you have applied some kind of primer or glue with a brush before attaching the rudder V-Seal. Would you mind sharing what was that and why is it needed? I think the V-Seal already has adhesive on one side.
Thanks for this video. I always find the videos about glider ownership interesting (maybe more so than the glider flying ones ;) ) it would be good to have some commentary on all parts of the inspection to understand what they are doing but realise this may not be possible. Cheers!
I thought it was weird at first when you always filmed yourself doing it. But now that I've seen the video, I think it's great. Great shots and well-cut.
That was awesome bro . I haven't seen any dude sharing about the glider service except you . I wish you someday you will share how you gonna build your own new glider design from zero until flight
Great video! I am thinking about getting a high performance glider....you obviously bought a high time one and did the 3000 hr check...can you tell us what that check costs? Thanks!
Thanks for sharing. I'm still >800 hrs away from 3000 hrs but it's good to already mentally prepare. Nice that one can save cost by doing it yourselves (partly)
For someone that really LOVES sailplanes, this is the best and most interesting video you've ever made. *edit - you answered my question in another post* Why are you working on the glider? Is that normal? Did they give you a price break for helping? Is that the norm for sailplane owners? THANKS!
Hey Stefan, I’m interested in buying a libelle and since you’ve owned one in the past, I would like to ask if you know what’s the maximum height of person that can fit in a libelle?
Depends on leg length - accommodates long legs well. Long back not so much. Shoulder width can be more of an issue than height. Try first. Great machines with excellent feedback and ability to find, centre and use lift - if you fit.
I was similarly worried before I bought mine, which has the taller canopy. I’m about 186cm, (6’1”) with shorter legs than average for my height. My knees are snug under the panel with the fiberglass seat back in (some have removed these in the past, maybe not a certified mod), a normal backpack parachute, and a 1” cushion. As has been said, shoulder width can be the limiting factor. A good, long trial fitting with all the gear is the only real way to know. Good luck!
Hello I'm from India ..I watch your every single video ....can you please guide me how did you learned gliding ... I mean can you please Make a video on your journey of gliding from zero to hero.
Isn't it great having a van?! So useful as you really can stay and help out. I did the same while painting my glider. Were DG happy for you to come and help? Are you an engineer at all or were they simply supervising?
Yes it's awesome to have the van! Unfortunately on Tuesday morning I crashed with the Crafter on the way to DG and it's really expensive to repair. That hurts! At DG I did about 2/3 of the work but I was really happy not to do all of the work. E.g. changing the brake tube is really difficult
Hi Liam, the question is what is greatly for you? Honestly I don't know how much it will impact the glide ratio but I would not want to fly a 1000 km flight or competition flight with a camera attached to the wing ;) For fun flights that's ok!
@@SteFly I get the idea ! Thank you !! By the way, your LS3 is good enough for the competitions ? You seem to be a super good pilot and maybe there are gliders with better performance ?
Dude how much cost for 1 glider ? I interesting bout to get Private Pilot License for riding the glider the question is if i already got permisson for ride the glider and am i rent some glider for couple ours or buy my own personal glider
My dad had several Cessna’s during his flying career. He had to get a 100hr service regularly. Is there something similar for gliders? Is this 3k service an industry mandate or is it a manufacturers recommendation? I recommend for anyone else doing this type of video to add a voice over descriptive. What is going on? Why the change?
Gliders usually don´t have 100 h checks. Only 3000 h or 6000 h and the annual check. These are mandatory. Of course there are some parts which need to be replaced from time to time, like the belts, hooks,... I was also planning to do a voice over but had no time to do so.
The 100h check is something mandatory in the US when an aircraft (including gliders I believe) is used "for hire". Insurance companies may also require it for clubs. That said the 100h is a very light inspection compared to what was done here! Here it is more akin to the engine overhaul on airplane, for example a Lycoming 160-hp engine (which you may find in small Cessna and other similar) has a 2000h TBO (time between overhaul). These are all manufacturers specific, I don't think there is a regulation preventing you from flying without following the manufacturer maintenance recommendation in the US (as far as I understand the FAA verbiage...), what about Europe?
In watching the disassembly of your sailplane, I realized that these are not mere machines, they are works of art.
100% true. Especially the old ones where every Rip is made by hand...
You are bringing the ASG 29 to DG ? Aha
You are living the good life, my friend. I am envious. Thanks for the great video.
Beautiful glider. Nice insight into the working parts. I used to own and fly an ASW 15. Sailplanes certainly are works of art, form follows function.
I think it is great that they have you do a lot of the work. You will learn a lot about your plane and save some money as well.
Thank you for showing all the processes. It was of great interest to me.

I was expecting this to be about the LS3 when I read DG Factory!
Please how many kilos does a meter of fiberglass take to make a glider?

I'm asking about it because I have never seen how this 3000 hours inspection looks like. Does your personal work reduces cost of this inspection? Thank you.
No that´s not the standard procedure at DG but I wanted to save money and film the inspection.
So, that was just exception for you in this case?
@@SteFly Normally if the owner wants to help it costs more (due to questions asked and slower speed).
@@SteFly Ok, I see - alles klar:-) But this video was really interesting - thank you:-)
I'm sure DG was torn about it as well, however it shows off their facility, so I'm sure that's why they went for it.
Schön das es die Möglichkeit für Aufnahmen gab!
LOL now that I saw your video I probably won’t upload mine anymore... it was scheduled for 8pm but low key worse 😂😂

They use Patex glue on the glas fiber surface to have a better adhesion

Love this video!! Keep them coming.
Were there any OEM service letters, mandatory modifications or airworthiness directives you needed to comply with?
how does a glider control mechanics work? is it fly by wire mechanical or hydralic assist for some controls like flaps alerons ?
It is conpletely mechanical and only the wheel brake is hydraulical.
@@SteFly thanks for replying.

Fantastic, for an aerospace engineer like me it will be a dream work for this factory!!! Do you know the airfoil distribution on your wing?

Depends if you want to use the 'Ned Kelly' racing or raised canopy...... I'm 1.83m and can fit in a Libelle with the 'Ned Kelly' racing canopy.
I´m 1,80 m and it was ok with the flat canopy. How tall are you?

Had to have my LS3 in for its 3000 hour check. It took 40 years to get to that point. It was en expensive check.
Did you need to change any parts?
@@SteFly some flaperon hinge pins (they had to be dug out)
Would you mind sharing the rounded cost of 3000 inspection? I am considering an LS3 and it indeed scares me.
Hast du eine Asbildung da für gemacht oder wie so machst du es selber?
Nein, ich habe keine Ausbildung in dem Bereich gemacht. Trotzdem interessiert es mich sehr ;)
@@SteFly and smart and clever indeed
Very cool man. You must have washed this glider before you took it to the shop.. its very shiny.
Yes, I did so. Afterwards it was a little bit dusty 😅
But now it's time to clean, polish and apply the sealings 👍
@@SteFly Its impressive to me. Keep making awesome scenic videos and keep enjoying flight!
This inspection is made by DG instead of Schleicher from which this ASG come. Why?
We are not only doing DG and LS planes, we often have Schempp Hirth and Schleicher planes for overhauls, checkups and so on,
Schleicher is not focused on overhauls, more on building new gliders. DG has a big service facility and is not limited to DG and LS gliders.
What was the reason for changing the type of brake fluid? What oil did you change to?
We must change the brake tube and they only had this brake fluid available. The most important requirement was that it is mineral oil.
Hi, I was wondering, does attaching a camera on the wing greatly impact the glide ratio ? Thanks

It completely depends on the type of glider. You can get good older gliders for 15k € and a new 18 m class glider costs 220k €.
But it is not necessary to buy a glider, you can also rent one in your club. That's relatively cheap in Germany
