Every time I drive through Germany, there are always gliders everywhere in the sky. Green, open fields, cumulus clouds, beautiful landscapes... seems like a lovely place for a glider pilot! Thank you for this lovely video!
im not a pilot but fly in sim i dunno i like alps more^^ germany is pretty flat so not much else than thermals... no ridge might get some on some hills but nothing to 2000m AGL... alps are also much more dangerous

Wow that's amazing Stefan, I'm 60 years old and just started glider flying lessons here in the South of England. It's people like Yourself that inspire me. I wish I had done it when I was young, but when you have a young family and house to provide for it's not always possible. I drive coaches all around Europe ( well I did until Covid raised it's ugly head) and always go to gliding clubs when I'm near one to watch. Especially in Germany and Austria when I do ski tours. Stay save to all. 🤝

Stefan, new viewer here and never glided before. Just Paragliding but not for few years and have always been interested in gliders. At 14:30 you mention something about dumping water. Why is that? I'm guessing you needed the extra weight for some reason but why take it in the first place if you later dump it?
We can ballast our gliders for better performance at good thermal conditions, so we are able to enhance our average speed. Before landing we usually dump the water ballast, so that the structure is less loaded and we can fly slower.

@@buschm1 heh It's just one of my far too optimistic dreams, even the VL3 would take 19 hours from South America (my location) to African continent, and the Turbine Legend would take 9 hours, such feat would probably only be achievable with a small electric airplane powered by a large array of solar panels, and you'd also have to make stops on multiple islands on the way to recharge, there's also no guarantee that you'd be able to land safely on such islands. edit: the Turbine Legend would take 9 hours and 53 mins so practically 10 hours

Thank you! I get an overview of the airspaces before the flight and know where I want to fly in general. At the flight I can see the airspaces on my OpenVario glide computer with XCSoar. This software also outputs warnings if you are close to an airspace.

Gday John, from Adelaide. There is no instrument that can predict a thermal. The vario that you can hear tells you if the glider is rising or falling and the rate of that. The long lower tones indicate the glider is falling or in sinking air. You can use the vario to centre in a thermal so that you climb more effectively. To predict where a thermal might be requires you to be observant to what is outside the glider. Small puffy clouds that are growing indicate air rising under them (carrying moisture to the height it condenses) so you tend to fly towards them. Some clouds form into "streets" which have more or less constant lift over large distances. Otherwise you can also look for other gliders circling as they tend to only circle in thermals. Mulitiple gliders will often "gaggle" in one thermal so these can be easy to spot but hard to fly precisely due to having to avoid collisions. On clear blue days with no cloud (low moisture) you can feel turbulence which can indicate a nearby thermal, You usually turn towards the wing that lifts in the turbulence, then try to find the centre of the thermal listening to the vario.
Hi Stefan, Ich wohne quasi im Schwarzwald und frage mich in meiner Region, wie man dort bei einer nötigen Außenlandung (bspw. wegen fehlender Thermik oder Seilriss bei Windenstart) vorgeht wenn die Region quasi vollständig durch Wald bedeckt ist. Das ist in diesen Gegenden durchaus ein Risiko, oder?
Man muss immer eine Landemöglichkeit in Reichweite haben. Moderne Segelflugzeuge haben eine beträchtliche Gleitzahl, die ASG29 z.B. 50:1. Bei idealen Bedingungen könnte man also mit 1000 m Höhe 50 km weit gleiten. Das Navigationssystem zeigt auch die Ankunftshöhe für erreichbare Landemöglichkeiten an.
Man geht aber immer von einer etwas schlechteren Gleitzahl als optimales Gleiten aus. Dann ist der Trick, eine Landewiese im Blick zu haben und früh genug die Landeentscheidung treffen und sofort zum Landefeld fliegen.
Sometimes the air itself is sinking, also when you're flying faster you lose efficiency. There is a specific speed to fly between thermals depending on the glider and the thermal, if you fly too slow you’re to slow if you fly to fast you lose to much altitude and need to climb longer, so it’s better to fly faster sometimes
In Germany it is a requirement for trainings and competition flights. At this flight it would not have been mandatory but I always fly with a parachute. I don't know of anyone in Germany flying without ;)

Throughout the video I was like if he opens the window a little it'll be refreshing. Haha. Idk how but I was so engrossed that the hard turns made me disoriented and pukish and I felt he should open a window. Otherwise I loved your video and subbed immediately. Its not everyday we get front row seats at thousands of feet above ground.
Yes it is perfectly possible to fly at night using ridge or wave lift, some sailplanes are night certified in some countries...(but very rare)...not everywhere is EASA controlled.....
Possible hmmmmm maybe, legal no, at least not in Germany. It is at least not safe because you are flying based on visual clues in a glider. Gliders do not have the necessary instruments to fly at night.
Please also show: Who helped you pushing your glider from the runway? How did you sleep/ shower etc? Did you talk to locals ? Will you ever show your pee bottle? ;-)
I had a leg bag incident a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't bad at first but then I banked for a tight thermal. Now I keep the bag out of my pants and my zipper down so I can make sure everything is flowing properly. People don't talk about it enough. Anyway getting pee all over yourself isn't the end of the world. It was my first flight beyond gliding distance of the airport so I was happy and wet.

Da hast du aber keine Anzeige für das E-Vario, oder? Nur das normale und den Sound aus dem OV?
In XCSoar gibt es eine große Infobox mit der E-Vario Anzeige. Aber ganz ehrlich, ich schaue lieber auf die Stauscheibe

Well, if you have a powered one, you could theoretical fly at night- but that is illegal. Gliders are not certificited for NVFR

There are doubleseater gliders available. Nearly every club has one and in most clubs you can get a flight.
