The biggest mistake Toney made was disrespecting his current club following his Betting ban. The interviews he undertook had an adverse reaction to his brand prior to that he was simply known as good traditional striker that came up from the lower league. After the interviews, he came across arrogant, entitled and a character perceived difficult to manage by potential suitora. Additionally, further scrutiny of his numbers and style of played revealed his qualities were overvalued, especially the lack of open play goals and interplay attributes, incredibly important to top 6 team.

Probably because Toney’s scored 0 open play goals in his last 16 games since his betting ban and there’s a risk he gets a long ban again.
Averages 5 open play goals a season in the PL.
Elite clubs wouldn’t want to change the way they play just to chuck long balls, long throws up to old school Toney.
My surprise is the way the English media talk about Toney hasn’t brainwashed Man City into buying him.
Toney is a bang average old school English striker that belongs at long throw Brentford.
Toney is the type of striker that would have suited Wimbledon of the 1990’s.

I remember when The Athletic and other media space kept propagating the narrative that Arsenal wanted Ivan Toney. I never bought that idea. Clearly, a lot of the "interest" in Ivan Toney is Agent generated. Lots of these reporters, like any field, should not be taken seriously. They engage in access journalism, you get access and you play nice with your "source". I like financial journalists and those who report the story instead of trying to be part of the story. Finance is objective, you fudge numbers and it can be spotted.
Needless to say, Ivan Toney like Osimehn overplayed their hands. got new agents who promised them too much and cant seem to deliver. Using journalists to push false narratives of interest has always been a thing. This case is no different. Unfortunate, Toney deserves a move for his final payday it has just been mismanaged. When everything is speculation, the transfer is a media narrative.
Media have this obsession to try to prove their worth. They tell you Arsenal need a traditional 9 despite teams winning without a traditional 9. As long as Arsenal dont sign tha player, theyll use it as justification to keep using that line as a reason for them not winning certain matches or a title. Modern football says, get goals from more than one person. Having the fortunes of your club be solely on one player is a thing of the past. That is too expensive of a way to play.

He's on £20k/week, he's barely a millionaire, but that also means he has less leverage than most in negotiating a bigger salary. PL clubs are hoping they can get a very good striker that's in his prime, on the cheap, while Toney is trying to set his family up for generations. If there was a top 6 club willing to pay him £150k/week+ (which isn't outrageous given some of the salaries that other players are on like Antony, Timo Werner, Joelinton, Danny Ings, Eddie Nketiah, etc) he'd probably stay in the Prem, but because he's on £20k/week and because of the gambling issue they're probably lowballing him with offers under £100k/week, and if Saudi are coming with £250k/week+ then it's a no brainer for someone who has never made a lot in football.
People can talk about the move ruining his chances of playing for England but he's already done that, something he couldn't have imagined happening 3 years ago, and there's no guarantee he'd be selected in 2026 for the WC, but what is guaranteed is that his family will need money, and a £13m+/year Saudi contract, tax free? That's life changing for Toney and his family and he'll most likely only get the opportunity once.

Toney ‘made it’ late in his career. Why? Probably because of his unwavering self-belief. However, there is a fine balance and it doesn’t take much to veer into an arrogant egomaniac. That might work for Toney when he can get away with it being the big fish in the small Brentford pond, but it IS a red flag to the bigger clubs.
But making it late also means he’s now playing catch up. Whereas most Prem kids are millionaires by 21, Toney was a relative peasant. So he feels like he’s missed out and is entitled to go and chase that bag. His focus on monetary gain will also turn a lot of the big clubs off.
He’ll end up in the camel league. It’s a pretty obvious solution: Brentford take an inflated fee, and Toney earns the money he thinks he’s missed out on. He won’t care about playing for England, because being an unused sub is worth less than retiring with £10m in the bank.
We need to be clear - there are zero concerns with his ability. He IS one of the top forwards in the Prem. This is as they say ‘just business’ and him looking after his retirement. Do I blame him? Not really. He’ll retire knowing that he made it AND with a serious wedge in his pocket.

Liam talking about Martinelli scoring the goals Arsenal need was just hilarious.
Has he even watched Arsenal play the last 12 moths?
When did Martinelli show last season that you can rely on him scoring goals?
And we have so far seen the exact same Martinelli in pre season and the first Premier League game as the Martinelli we saw last season.
Martinelli has had one single good season for Arsenal and to rely on him to suddenly become the player he was then is in reality to gift the Premier League win to City.
For everybody apart from maybe Liam, is it extremely obvious that Arsenal need to sign a proper goal scorer.
Either a striker or a left winger and maybe a left winger to replace Martinelli is the best option.
It makes perfect sense for Arsenal to sign a player like Toney, but it is VERY obvious that all top clubs are not interested in singing Toney at all.
It might be because of his gambling and it might be because of reasons we don't know about, but the reality is that there are multiple top clubs that need a striker like Toney in their team.
Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool for sure need one and it would be nice for United to have one now as well, but still no one are willing to touch him with a ten foot long pole.

toney would be an absolutely brilliant fit football-wise for us at arsenal: he works hard defensively, he's far better as a creator than generally given credit for, and he's a smart player.
problem is his age vs price and POSSIBLY whether he'd fit in personality-wise.

i disagree. the notion that toney is just a physically more robust peter crouch is wrong. if anything, havertz-as-striker is a not terrible comp to me, which makes him an excellent fit (football-wise). he's also not a terrible creator (witness the assist to mbuemo in their dismantling of united some time ago) on top of it.
that said, i'm not sure if he's a fit in terms of personality and that's a big deal to the eduteta so it might well be a moot point.

There are just too many red flags there to justify spending a lot of money on him. Especially now with all these limits on spending. Also if I'm Toney, go to Saudi League and get that money. You play this season without a long term deal, you are one bad challenge away from potentially losing millions especially at that age.

The clamour for big clubs to sign Toney was only from English media and naive fans in my opinion. His style doesn't suit any one of the big clubs. He's a big target man with decent hold-up play and a great penalty taker. He doesn't really run in behind, he's not a massive pressing machine, he's not great at taking players on or something else. For a player that was going to cost something like 50mil quid it makes absolutely no sense. He's had a couple of good seasons and suddenly he's valued at that insane price, it makes no sense. He's effectively a younger English version of Joselu who only cost Madrid 1.5mil. Arteta loves multifunctional players and forwards that are a lot more mobile and rounded than Toney, for 50mil it was never ever going to happen.

He had one decent goalscoring season in the prem, but I refuse to believe he is the answer to a number 9 at a top club but he's not worth any more than 20 million, he's basically a Danny Ings. Also, do you know how many times Toney has "saved" Brentford with a goal contribution when they needed it to break the deadlock late on in a game? 0. NONE AT ALL. He's not some magical answer at number 9 for Arsenal, in fact I would argue that Havertz will have a better season than Toney, as will Jesus. Toney is just not that good, end of story. I'm also so glad Arsenal didn't sign him and still haven't, he seems like a problem player: gambling, can't stay off social media, conduct issues, etc... anything but the model professional that leads by example, which is what Arteta wants in his players.
