  • hello this is a short video on how to prevent/ slow down the spread of gypsy moth caterpillars. just wrap duct tape around the tree once and then twist and go around 4-5 times over lapping about half an inch the smell of the tape will detour the caterpillars

@@aivisu8865 they are the larvae of the Gypsy Moth not June Bugs. It’s most likely that the June Bugs just flew into the tape and got stuck also. Plus they will not transform while stuck to tape they will just die

Good job on your tape there, its working better than my tape. I've seen them walking right across my tape. I'm using clear packing tape, sticky side out. I may have to swap over to duct tape like you are using. I pick them off the tree when I see them and drop them in a bucket of soapy water. They are an invasive species, so I have no problem disposing of them. A few corrections though, these are not tent caterpillars, and they don't make tents. They may or may not wrap themselves in a leaf, or crawl into the crook of a branch, where they turn into a cocoon of sorts, and emerge as a Gypsy Moth. They do not turn into a June Bug. Those are from the white grubs in your lawn. Good job on your video though.

thank you! and yes i realized that after i made the video my landscaping buddy was my source of info il have to reprimand him, i think it has alot to do with the smell of the tape, gorilla tape has a chemical smell more than regular tape. and yes very invasive i tired to spray them with saopy water and it dosnt seem to affect them.

Oh good grief!! Leave them alone and the birds, insects and other mammals will have a smorgasbord!!!! What the heck? Do you brilliant people not realize the caterpillars AND the moths they become are FOOD for other creatures...??? There are SQUIRRELS (which are always in trees) and many, many, many other mammals and insects that dine on these insects!!!

@@debcann7818 Well thats interesting, because the birds and the squirrels don't touch them. Our neighbourhood, and most of Southern Ontario's trees are being destroyed by the Gypsy Moth caterpillars. So I guess you know more than what the birds do, because apparently they're not smart enough to know about it.

@@debcann7818 - Large portions of the Manistee Nation Forest in Michigan look like it's still winter. In July. For miles and miles its just bare trees - how many animals depend upon that ecosystem? I doubt they'll feel better about it because there'll be more bugs they don't eat around. It seems like we can do with fewer of this, btw, invasive non-native bug that actually thrives in part because there is a lack of natural predators here

    Yep. they're gypsy
moths caterpillers which are not tent caterpillars and they don't turn into june bugs. June bugs mutate from slugs thar chew o your grass roots. Tent caterpillers stay in ugly looking nests that look like spider meshes and don't climb up and down your tree. But thanks for the video with the tape it does control gypsy moth caterpillers.

It’s not the smell of the tape lol they are sticking to it and their tiny brains don’t understand what’s happening and they freak out and go the other way

Ngl the caterpillars are super cute even if they are destructive. If only people didn’t introduce them to countries they don’t belong.
