Honestly with so many people showing interest in this kind of setup it'd be perfect for Valve to jump right back into the Steam Machine but without the issues of multiple different brands like they had before, maybe even just partnering with a mini PC company to make one even if manufacturing it themselves is an issue.
I absolutely agree. Kinda weird that they're not doing this yet, TBH. I'm surprised that they haven't released a steam machine with Deck hardware (just without the built-in controller/screen). Maybe they're cooking something up we don't know about 🤔
@@TechDweeb We saw an odd little box next to a TV in one of their videos, so they could very well be making one. Also, we know their new VR headset, the "Deckard," will use Steam Deck-like hardware, have a VR specific version of Steam OS, and be a standalone/PCVR headset. So on top of the headset being compatible with most PCs, chances are we could see a new Steam Machine purpose built as a console replacement that just so happens to also interface with the headset.
Love how the steam machines failure didnt stop Valve from making the Steam Deck. Its great that we have come so far technologically to watch TechDweebs video on our handhelds
This is the main thing I think a lot of handheld PC companies are not realizing, that the software is as or maybe more important than the hardware. Valve knows the value of convenience and ease and having the SteamOS instead of trying to use windows on a screen size it was not intended for, it makes all the difference.
For playing beefier games, I have a steam deck that I put a 1tb drive in and I was able to play Starfield, and Street Fighter 6 on it just fine. It was on potato settings but it was serviceable for what I needed it for which was sitting on the couch or on the bed to hang out with my wife.
I did something very similar except with a mini PC that uses a very low power embedded Ryzen APU and HoloISO. It is a very under powered processor but I am constantly impressed by what it can do.
The return of the Steam Machine! When they first came out, they just were not ready getting Windows games natively running on Linux. Steam really should have just kept the hardware production to themselves because you had major PC companies producing Steam Machines that the average non-PC gamer saw as consoles but sold for up to $1,000 plus. Reminds me back in the day of seeing a NeoGeo on the shelf for $600 and if you wanted two player, the separate arcade controller was right next to it for $150. In the day of $100-$200 main stream consoles, $600 was insane. Not a lot today but imagine young gamers making the minimum wage of around $4-$5 an hour.
I was using mini pc with windows for a while now. The only problem is using xpader and antimicro to map keyboard to controller, which involves extra steps before starting a pc game that does not support gamepad natively. But this looks really good I guess. I actually might try this one

This is 100% my plan for my new PC. However, keep in mind that ChimeraOS doesn't support dual boot from the same drive. You'll need a second one. Also, there are always some games that just don't run under Linux / with Proton. Windows as a backup is never wrong, but I'm not going to use it as main OS anymore.
Kye-meera. :-P Great video. I'm personally holding out until the official SteamOS release for PC, which I think Valve are probably trying to get as tight as possible for mass adoption. I'm pretty sure the Deck was just the opening move of the plan, with SteamOS for PC being the real intention for the software. I think the Shenzhen mini-PC makers are waiting for the official release too, but it will open the floodgates. As a Linux user of 23 years, I can't believe our OS is starting to be seen as the easy option. Shedding a wee tear. 🙂

First of all, great video. The one thing I don't like is the requirement to download the image from the installer, instead of having it already downloaded to install offline. Spidey senses are tingling and all that. I don't use SteamOS as I don't like the requirement of my OS to use an online account. Also because I trust SteamOS/Valve even less than Microsoft on system backwards compatibility. Every few years they easily stop allowing installing the steam client on older OSes, even if you have a ton of games which might even require those OSes to run properly. What I do like about steamOS is that by them having some success, Linux gets more attention by game developers, so having something like Ubuntu might be a good solution one day if you are a "Windows gamer". Also I stopped buying games from Steam, for the most part, and only buy games from GOG for all the drm-free and offline installers goodness. Happy Sunday!
You could make an image backup of your nvme (25 to 50 Gb i assume) with a free imager software to an external harddisk or something instead of buying a new one. Experienced users might als setup a dual boot system, just as an additional information if of interest.
I believe Nvidia support is only for the desktop version though, the handheld/console version still requires AMD. It's because of Gamescope, Nvidia just doesn't work on it yet, or it's still very early/buggy, but it's being worked on. Nvidia only recently even started working on Wayland, which Gamescope is a Wayland compositor, so it'll get there eventually. Side note: there's also NobaraOS, built off of Fedora by GloriousEggroll (the guy that does all the GE forks for Proton and Wine, he's also a Red Hat engineer) and somewhat recently there's been a "Steam Deck" version which also makes it console-like for handhelds and otherwise. I haven't been able to determine yet if this version works with Nvidia, though. The desktop version definitely does.

Is that the MiniPC you talked me in to buying yesterday because it was on sale? It's awesome you're doing this video, because the first thing I plan on doing with it is putting Linux on it, and the flash sale is over. I bought it with 15 minutes to spare.
@@TechDweeb It's not too shabby, got Nobara up and running after I turned off the USB boot security. In fact, I'm typing on it now. I do have one question for you about your experience. I have two computers in this room, a full sized tower and this miniPC. The full sized tower is using a USB Wifi dongle, and the miniPC is using it's built in WiFi. Does the miniPC's built in WiFi suck for you? Because I have full bandwidth with the tower and it's dongle, but the miniPC is only getting 1/3 of it's signal. And it's a mini-dongle on the tower, not one with an antenna. Just wondering if it's a problem with mine.

Otherwise one would end up with necessity to use ethernet or wifi dongle to get stuff done. Also I'm not sure if xnone is included with Chimera, some xbox controller dongles might not work without it.

We hook up our Steam Deck to the TV from time to time, but I have been looking for a more permanent solution. I will certainly be missing the form factor of a mini-PC, but I might do a dual boot on my gaming laptop. Since the release of the Steam Deck, my laptop just doesn't get the usage and due to the age, selling it isn't much of an option. On to more important questions, what do you argue with your cat about? I have an ongoing argument with our younger cat about why I am such a jerk and don't allow him to knock over everything on my desk.
Hermione is always giving me a hard time about my life choices. Judging me for not being more successful, reminding me that I'm a failure, that I'm not handsome enough, that my muscles are too small... It's hard living with someone who knows my innermost insecurities and constantly berates me for them. Oh and yes, before you ask, she is definitely real and alive.
I really like this. Since I've seen some of these videos of yours i kinda want something like this now. Connected to my home tv easy to use classic emulator games or steam game's it's definitely something else than just a steam deck. Don't get me wrong i also would like to hold that and play but having multiple choices is great
Nice vid! I wasn't aware of this for some reason. Question (for anyone really) are you at all concerned with the initial Windows set up not allowing a pre-scan of the installed drive for any hidden virus? Not saying any one particular reseller is suspect but I think we all know it has happened in the recent past and all this stuff is coming from China after all... I realize you removed the original drive, after letting (hopefully Windows only) do it's thing just curious. Subscribed! Will be going through all the videos I have missed, keep up the good work!
EmuDeck is also a yes. Plugins though, not sure what you mean exactly, but if you're talking about Decky Loader and it's plugins... maybe, but probably not? Not 100% sure, but on their wiki there's a FAQ "Does Decky Loader work on Windows, Mac, or other operating systems?" "No, Decky Loader is only intended for use with the installation of SteamOS provided on Steam Deck." and the more relevant part: "HoloISO and other SteamOS third-party distributions are not officially supported and may not work with Decky Loader. We have no plans to support other operating systems."
@@8BitCerberus I appreciate you! Thank you for checking in on that! My brain is so set on, "well, let's test it and find out!" that I forget that there's generally already paperwork on the subject(s). But yeah, thanks again!
It's fun an very entertaining but people have to keep in mind that it doesn't make much sense to buy a 300 eur minipc to run PC games, for 300eur you can buy a second hand or build a cheap PC with dedicated graphics and run the games at a higher resolution and quality. But I yeah... it's entertaining and if you have 300eur left over it's cool
How does this compare to simply using the windows 11 install? Are the only advantages that it works with the controller or are there any other benefits?
No windows annoyances to deal with is one of the main reasons. And the fact that everything is all integrated together so it is designed to work purely with a controller on every level of the operating system. Steam big picture mode is fine on Windows but on a Windows machine you will always need to have a keyboard in mouse plugged in. This is designed to work purely with a controller. So it's way more convenient for a handheld or for a console that stays plugged into a TV.
This is tempting me to buy one of these mini pcs so much. Curious, when you were looking at your list of games under "Installed" there was a date under each. How do you get that to show up?
You can organize them by 'date added to library'. I have over 2000 games so this is how I like to view them when looking at my big list, so I can see what I've added recently to make sure I play the new stuff.
How is ChimeraOS with modding? Like if I wanted a console pc but I want to play a souls overhaul like convergence or archthrones how feasible would that be?
I have no idea. As far as I know most games are running through a proton compatibility layer, so in theory the same stuff you'd do on Windows would work here, but I can't say for sure because I've never tried.
Valve should make a new non portable console like steam deck, same os and same but more powerful hardware profile and have an attachment or low profile built in dock on it Higher cpu, more and faster ram, bigger storage and it would compliment the steam deck user by sharing installed games on the console or have a direct stream from console to deck Valve could sell it for around the same price point as the deck but save on screen and complicated micro build and put the savings into better hardware But ... tbh,my deck is already all i need,i already have a dock,i have 3.5 tb on my deck and it runs near everything i would want
9:00 Dude, you play STAR WARS: Squadrons? I thought that game was dead. I picked it up for less than a buck on one of those key sites when they were having a sale, but have not really gotten to do much multiplayer because the servers are often bereft of players.
Can Chimera OS stream from a network PC that has Steam on Windows? I recently grabbed a Beelink SER5 Max on a flash sale. Currently on Win11 with a second 1TB SSD and 32GB of DDR4. It's a little beast.

Oh and yes, before you ask, she is definitely real and alive.
it don’t work for me! It stays on a black screen when I installed it
A "yeah man I wanna do it" with multiple sexual yeahs throughout the video I know there's a reason I come back every day 😂😂
I see you're a dweeb of refined tastes 🧐
I would like to know how I turn my pc into a retro gaming machine
You can play steam deck games on PC’s?
Yup!
ChimeraOS or HoloISO? Best option for HP mini G3 with AMd A10, horrible AMD drivers era
I really like this. Since I've seen some of these videos of yours i kinda want something like this now. Connected to my home tv easy to use classic emulator games or steam game's it's definitely something else than just a steam deck. Don't get me wrong i also would like to hold that and play but having multiple choices is great
It's pronounce Kimera not Chimera, a Frankenstein's monster of ancient mythological monsters to be sure.
Desktop Mode, EmuDeck and/or plug-ins work at all?
Desktop mode yes, haven't tested emudeck or other plugins etc. Definitely going to play around with this a lot more and see what it can do.
@@TechDweeb I'm looking forward to it! I was tempted to jump on this little machine after your post! Seems like fun!
Did you try Lutris or Heroic Games Launcher for the non steam games?
"I'm gonna shove my dongle into the usb a hole"
2024 is going to be a banner year.
I promise your faith in me will be well placed!
How would you compare performance of this compared to a Docked Steam Deck?
How well does Linux handle HDR?
TechDweeb: "-and it has two USB-A Holes"
Me: hah! It's funny cause he said "A-hole". XDD
I wonder if this would run warzone 3 + mw3 solid 60 on windows bro ? For cheapest decent one that can 🏆💚👊
Can you revisit this but with streaming it to your android on the go?
Would like to know how it handles Rocket League and CS, those are my main games, the other ones I know it will handle
Why not use SteamOs, instead?
Is the controller you are using from 8Bitdo?
It's fun an very entertaining but people have to keep in mind that it doesn't make much sense to buy a 300 eur minipc to run PC games, for 300eur you can buy a second hand or build a cheap PC with dedicated graphics and run the games at a higher resolution and quality. But I yeah... it's entertaining and if you have 300eur left over it's cool
Does this support an eGPU?
In theory yes but I don't have one to test so I can't say for sure.
Stop calling me that so mean! 🤣🤣🤣 03:20
@@TechDweeb I only have 1200 games (though my account does have the "20 years of service" badge)
Valve should make a new non portable console like steam deck, same os and same but more powerful hardware profile and have an attachment or low profile built in dock on it
Higher cpu, more and faster ram, bigger storage and it would compliment the steam deck user by sharing installed games on the console or have a direct stream from console to deck
Valve could sell it for around the same price point as the deck but save on screen and complicated micro build and put the savings into better hardware
But ... tbh,my deck is already all i need,i already have a dock,i have 3.5 tb on my deck and it runs near everything i would want
9:00 Dude, you play STAR WARS: Squadrons? I thought that game was dead. I picked it up for less than a buck on one of those key sites when they were having a sale, but have not really gotten to do much multiplayer because the servers are often bereft of players.
Just playin the single player. It came with one of my Humble bundles I think? Don't remember how it got there lol.
ah, I was hoping to find some hoomanz to team up with and/or duel... well, maybe there's still hope to revive this game...?@@TechDweeb
Can Chimera OS stream from a network PC that has Steam on Windows? I recently grabbed a Beelink SER5 Max on a flash sale. Currently on Win11 with a second 1TB SSD and 32GB of DDR4. It's a little beast.
With the GMKtec did you run into any thermal issues while using ChimeraOS. If so what did you do to fix it?
What is the name of your keyboard
Chimera OS borked itself for me having good results with Nobarra's steamdeck edition
How much emulation can it do?
Up to PS3. Not all PS3 though. Here's a video of me testing another Mini PC with the same chip: th-cam.com/video/dNgYst0PumM/w-d-xo.html
