I’m an old fart who grew up in Levis. I chuckle when I see what Levis says about breaking them in and washing them. Here’s a couple of tips from a Boomer...The best looking jeans have a natural fade that only gets better with time. Time is essential. Make sure that your 501s are the rigid shrink-to-fit. Buy a size larger. I wear a 34” waist so I buy 35” STF. Sure, you can put them on and sit in a hot bath-seriously though-do you think generations of guys actually did that? Rather, machine wash in COLD water then drip dry-generally takes two days unless it’s summer. The machine wash naturally shrinks the denim. Wear for at least 9 months, preferably a year, then machine wash in COLD water and drip dry. What you’ll notice is the your Levis will form to your body and there will be great fade marks making them unique. Avoid pre-shrunk or machine faded. Jeans that are naturally worn in, faded, and well-loved communicate confidence and a slightly bad-boy persona. Enjoy!
I used to buy mine at Miller's Outpost, and they always suggested I get three inches bigger in length and one inch wider at the waist. It always worked for me, and I did dry them in a machine!
I wore mine while in the tub. They turned into the most form fitting comfortable jeans I own. I’ve read the bath tub technique I just said on the Levi’s site. Also the technique of not letting them fully dry, after doing what you did, then putting them on while damp. Then wearing till they are dry
One day I was like 20 walking around Chicago in just a dress shirt and a blazer and it was like 10° out and I'm like I'm gonna find a pea coat. And I saw one and it didn't really fit right so I kept taking the bus places and I found an Express jacket with the tags on labeled $282 and paid $30 for it. It was my mission, and it worked
Levi’s “Shrink to fit” will shrink 1 inch in waist and 2 to 3 inches in the length. choose size on this formula. soak for an hour in the washing machine with hot water. then turn on the washer and finish the cycle. drip dry. Now you can machine wash and dry as needed.
You really can't go wrong with a Straight fit. Especially one that is basically custom fit. I prefer to wear the jeans when they are slightly damp and let them shrink on me, you really won't get knee bags and the fit becomes superb. Gustin and Brave star jeans are solid for the price.
Dude! I was literally thinking about doing a 501STF video for the past few weeks! Kind of disappointed that they didn’t shrink on the leg because a lot of reviews online said they would get a natural taper. I actually own a pair of 501T which come already with a taper down the leg. Still i love the way the 501 fits up top with the button fly and high rise
@@TheIronSnail yeah im gonna want mine pretty slim too - wonder if its still worth buying them over other cuts. just got a sick deal on a pari of selvedge 502 (regular taper) selvedge jeans from the outlet for $15 and I actually think they're similar to the 501T but with a zip fly - check em out!

At 3:11 "I didn't listen to Levi's at all." I have been wearing Levi's 501s shrink-to-fit jeans since the late 1960s and have a large US made vintage collection. One persistent problem has always been buyers who just don't believe they have to buy 501 STF jeans 1-2 inches greater in the waist and 3-4 inches in the length. So they get home wash their jeans and they are way too small to wear, like in this video, and they then return them creating waste and a hassle for the store, Levi's, and the customer those jeans were made for. They are like people who are told not to look at the eclipse but don't believe it and do so, or drunk drivers. They are informed what is the right thing to do but they know better.
Growing up it seemed the fad was 501s and guys wanted them snug, especially in the seat, to contour and show off your body. School dress code didn't allow jeans but once home and weekend hanging out meant get out your Levis
I'm normally a 34 waist and for me to get Unsanforized jeans (14oz Cone Mills) to fit me comfortably I had to buy 38's ... I literally lost 4 sizes during the first soak!!! In Sanforized jeans I buy a 35 and they work out great. So my point for everyone is... be aware that unsanforized can shrink up to 4 sizes! They're a bit of a gamble, but pretty damn awesome if you can get it right. I'd say for your first pair of unsanforized jeans, look for a bargain in the event you mess up it won't feel so dramatic (like a $100+ pair you'll never get to wear) ... in my case I have friends smaller than me.
After soaking your jeans, you should have dried them in a clothes dryer set on high temperature. That will provide maximum shrinkage the first time. I make custom-made jeans, and I preshrink the fabric before making the pants.
That is absolutely the right thing to do, if you bought the proper size STF jeans. Unfortunately, Mr. Snail bought too small a size and they shrunk too much to be comfortably worn. If he dries them on high he won't even be able to get them on.
Always wait a year before letting raw denim get soaked. That way they will get a great natural wear pattern. I like the 501 slightly wider but straight leg. Original denim from back in the 1800’s was always raw selvedge and really only came in one length which is why up until the sixties jeans always had super high cuffs so the would be the right length. Personally I like vintage work clothing retro style so I never wash and always buy a 36 length even though I’m a 30 inseam so I can put in big cuffs. They’re some great methods to sanitize and deodorize naturally with out getting them wet. So yeah I guess why I’m saying is raw denim is great and has a lot of cool looks you can get with them. And if you like retro workwear and greaser look also raw is the way to go! Yeah and if you drop 100 bux on a pair they shouldn’t wear out nearly as fast as modern denim so really you are getting three pairs worth of wear time out of one pair. I usually spend around the 250 price range from a company that custom fits and makes my jeans. I’ll get a pair in grayish blue and a pair super dark blue both with gold stitching reinforced and hand riveted. So yeah I spend 450 dollars on two pairs but they last 6-7 years and are custom fit. Which is way cheaper than buying a pair of regular denim Levi’s at 80 bux a pop and only get a year max wear time before wholes and seem tears start. Anyway cool video and just wanted to add my opinion on why it’s more economic in the long run to spend more. Cheers and keep rockin the denim!!!!
gotta actually sit and soak in the tub, avoid the painful waist stretching period. so long as you don't stretch the knees out too much you should be alright.

Hi. I've tried Gap selvedge in straight and standard fit. Good selvedge jeans for the price. Have had Unbranded 301 as well as other Japanese and US selvedge jeans. Currently working on a pair of 501 stf and will wear them to do yard work and see how they fade when I do wash them. The 501 is good to experiment with with attempt to take a pair to get tailored and try different waist sizes for fun.
How are they holding up? Im into my second pair, 1st pair lasted almost a year with really cool fades (I washed them very little, about 5 to 6 times). I just got a black pair also 501 stf.
Hi, may I ask? So I got the 501 STF. Soaked, air dried, got the size right(+1/+2), everything is cool and fun, sits on me exactly as expected. So my question is now what's the actual difference between my sized up STF and a normal dark 501 (non STF), in which case it all seems to be just done for me beforehand? I can see the point if you use the bath tub wear method or "no wash ever", but for a more casual wash scenario, is not it is the same?
501's that aren't STF go through the sandforization which causes a lot of the character of the denim to be lost through different treatments like singeing where as STF jeans haven't went through this process and also a bit of tradition as well as the ability to customise how you want the jeans to fit.
I shrunk mine wrong then lol did like war water and just air dried outside while wearing them. I also wore then for six months before I did it. Turned out ok tho

Marvin Marker - it all depends on what fit you want . If you want them hipster tight buy your size . If you want them for work or to ride a motorcycle your gonna need space so I buy one size up on the waist . This guys first mistake was he washed them. I love raw denim so I don’t wash mine for a while but I have many more so I don’t keep using the same one over and over maybe only three times a week or twice a week. So it all depends what you want man .
Marvin Marker - my suggestion is buy your size, remember all 501’s fit loose around the ankles. And don’t wash them for as long as you can so they can get pretty cool fades . Once you wash them (the way this dude is doing in this video) they will shrink a lot the first time.
Please Mike, I need your help. What's the difference between a 72334. - 0178 and a 72334. - 0134 type 3 jackets? And why can't I find any new -0178? Thanks
When 501's were first exported to the UK, they were not very popular, because all UK jeans had a zip fly. Levi's replaced the buttons with a zip and called them 502. They remained the standard UK Levi's until the 70's when all the new styles were introduced and they virtually disappeared. It was only when the big 501 revival happened the we then saw the 501's, for the first time in about 30 years. Are the 502 jeans that you mentioned zip fly 501's. or has the style number been reused.?
So they are the 501, jeans originally introduced for the UK market with a zip and given the code 502. The full code was 502-0217-XX Are yours new, or vintage jeans from the 1960's
Yes they will shrink after they get wet. Soak them in the tub when they are almost dry wear them until they dry completely. Then wear the hell out them and do NOT wash them until a year later. I'm serious this is how you'll get your favorite jeans.
@@surungmalau8821 Yes, but I'm not saying to wear them when you know you will get dirty or sweaty. I thought the same thing, how the jeans will smell but if you use Lysol on the jeans they will have no odor. If you wash them they will not look right.
@@TheIronSnail you should do a review on the 1947 501, some TH-camr bought it but never update the progress. I just got my 1954 501, rigid selvedge is way better for shaping those whiskers, honeycomb and etc. Also, if you are interested, on Japanese Levi’s site, they have 14oz 501, modern cutting, fit like the nowadays normal 501. However, the fabric is selvedge denim and the detail process is the same as vintage 501s.
Soaking them on their own? Wierd, but ok. I thought the best technique was to take a hot bath or shower with them on and wear them till they're mostly dry.
@@TheIronSnail hey man, thanks for the reply. Hmm now I'm wondering how I should size if I got a pair. My non-stf 501s are both size 28 and 29. Hell Bent thanks for you reply. I want them to be a casual pair I’ll be wearing with boots. Snug around the waist, comfortable all around.
Marvin Marker - my suggestion is buy your size, remember all 501’s fit loose around the ankles.
And don’t wash them for as long as you can so they can get pretty cool fades .
Once you wash them (the way this dude is doing in this video) they will shrink a lot the first time.
What size were those 501’s shrink to fit jeans
29 x 30!
lmao Levis that make you throw up to bend down that sounds fun X_X
The slimy feeling is probably from all the starch
Yes el jean Levis Strauss 501original,my frends
Please Mike, I need your help. What's the difference between a 72334. - 0178 and a 72334. - 0134 type 3 jackets? And why can't I find any new -0178? Thanks
These are all different versions of the type 3! Best to look them all up and see! (Sadly right now I’m too busy with work to do it!)
I prefer 505..feel good..
Those jeans are some gangster shit here in LA
Have you tried a 502 yet? They’re pretty comfortable and nice fitting
Are the 502 jeans that you mentioned zip fly 501's. or has the style number been reused.?
wilsjane no they are strictly a 502 model with zip fly, my favorite jeans
So they are the 501, jeans originally introduced for the UK market with a zip and given the code 502. The full code was 502-0217-XX
Are yours new, or vintage jeans from the 1960's
Yup I won’t be washing mine thanks!
So if I buy the levis 501 shrink to fit will they get tighter after washing?
Yes they will shrink after they get wet. Soak them in the tub when they are almost dry wear them until they dry completely. Then wear the hell out them and do NOT wash them until a year later. I'm serious this is how you'll get your favorite jeans.
@@mr.cocksure2579 oh my...a year?🤔
@@surungmalau8821 Yes, but I'm not saying to wear them when you know you will get dirty or sweaty. I thought the same thing, how the jeans will smell but if you use Lysol on the jeans they will have no odor. If you wash them they will not look right.
Absolutely stunning posterior.
GENZ quite fine if I do say so myself!
i wishd id had some day lewis jeans
Do have to STF the gap 1969 jeans?
You do not!
They don’t shrink when you dry them indoors?
They still shrink!
@@TheIronSnail how much though a lot or less
@@la_void9750 the same
@@ValFinale thanks
woah not tbr or anything but I wonder how small his legs are. I'm a w29 l32 and my are a little filling when I put mine one🤔
Ray Remington 1795 apparently I have tiny legs! My gf is always commenting how it’s a miracle i can stand
You should really try LVC 1947 or 1954 501.
Wearing a pair of 1947’s now!
Oh that sounds pretty sweet! And i am doing a review soon!
How tall are you and what size you wear since you said pants always long on you
5’9” and I to 30 x 32 with a double cuff! No cuff I’d do 29.5
11:07 LOL
Do you keep that patch on back?
Yup!
Blue Jean - David Bowie
I used to use these back in my cholo days, serio.
what watch is that? rolex dj? 36mm?
Oh yes!
@@TheIronSnail very nice!! its looks nice on your wrist
Ty!!
Why do you cuff your jeans?
H&M have raw selvedge denim jeans for like 50 dollars online only. Seems like a good deal
how many oz is the levis jeans
12!
My knob shrank and it’s also now blue so I’m thinking of suing you 😢
Soaking them on their own? Wierd, but ok.
I thought the best technique was to take a hot bath or shower with them on and wear them till they're mostly dry.
Good job Man
Michael Farrell thanks man!
How did you size on your stf?
These are two small! I went down one size for these but really you should size up 2 to get a proper STF fit!
@@TheIronSnail hey man, thanks for the reply. Hmm now I'm wondering how I should size if I got a pair. My non-stf 501s are both size 28 and 29. Both fit great but if I wanted the fit of my size 29 ones think I should get a size 30 if I were to get regular stf? Or stick with a 29? think it would be the same deal if I were to get lvc 1947 stf?
You gotta wear them in the tub. Get out and wear them til they are dry.
you looks like james dean softly
Levi's 501s for 30 dollars where dude?
Jc penny today 35 + tax
Black Friday through Christmas Macy’s and Levi’s stores $37 that’s with tax!
Why didn't you just buy Levi's just like the 501's but tapered at the bottom?..lol..they make em
Cool video
There are made in Mexico and made in Egypt Levis 501 STFs. Make sure you get made in Mexico. I have both and can say the made in Egypts are junk.
Oh interesting!
:evis are for wimps who never knew hard work - exact opposite of what they used to be. Last pair I had lasted a couple weeks
You must run them through hell!
this is my problem, when shrunk they fit my waist, even need a belt, but they're too tight in my crotch like in this video
Classic 501 issue!
@@TheIronSnail found a solution, Lee’s are higher quality and fit better. Not joking check out Lee, you might have to size down 1-2.
I would have purchased these two or three inches larger in the waist than you did.
2 FN commercials,
TH-cam sucks.
