    timpan player is so ruff and savige and that sound really great in some moments. His guts disarmed Haitink.

    I love how the editors of this score unnecessarily split up all of the woodwind parts to inflate the score, as if this piece wasn't already monumental, massive or impressive enough by itself.

    • @ShaunakDesaiPiano
      @ShaunakDesaiPiano ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it’s because Beethoven assigned two players for each wind part, so there were two first flautists, two second flautists, two first oboists and so on.

      @@ShaunakDesaiPiano I did't know about that, and it's an interesting idea, but even if that was the case, it was common practice in the 20th century (when this edition was made) to double wind parts anyway, no matter if intended or not, since the string sections used when playing Beethoven were often absolutely massive. Karajan is a good example for this.

      The woodwinds often have completely separate lines for much of the first movement, so I think it could have been done to make the score look clearer.

      The thing about composers is, they try to make music that fits the style of the tempo. If its an Adagio, then they will use the notes that make it sound like it is a slow tempo piece. You can't play a rondo slowly because it was meant to be played fast.

    49:22, 57:44 - in the first flute part, it’s the motif of the second theme of the movement, played backwards.

      The metronome marks for Beethoven's op 125 are regularly ignored, and the Adagio is no exception. Most conductors take it twice as slowly as the MM, sadly. However, when the Ninth was being prepared for its first performance in England, Beethoven wrote to the conductor that the entire performance should not exceed forty-five minutes. Even if all repeats in the Scherzo were omitted, this would still be an insanely fast rendition, amounting to rushed and gabbled playing and singing with no repose whatsoever. So it's a toss-up.
