  • On a windy October Sunday, my wife Dawn and I embarked on a scenic adventure to explore the captivating Boddin Point Lime Kilns and the fast-eroding coastline that supported the old lime kiln buildings. Nestled three miles south of Montrose, this rugged coastal gem promised a day of exploration and discovery. Here's a recount of our memorable walk.
We started our journey from Arbroath leaving the main road before Montrose and then following minor roads that led us back down towards the coast. The anticipation of reaching Boddin Point, a place known for its wild coastal beauty, was building within us as we drove through the charming countryside.
As we approached the hamlet of Boddin, we noted its quaint charm with a few farmsteads and a bothy, a testament to its rural character.
Parking was relatively easy, as we found a spot on the verge above the gated track leading down to the point itself. It was important not to block access to farm vehicles, and we made sure to be considerate of the local community.
Maps indicated the presence of a harbour, and a concrete slipway beckoned us toward the shore which is now very eroded. We spotted the skeletons of a few boats huddled on the neck of the point, their spines and ribs now open to the elements but proof of the maritime activities that had taken place around this point.
The most iconic feature of Boddin Point was the ancient limekiln that stood at its seaward end, a relic from the 1700s. Parts of it had succumbed to time and erosion, but the fact that it still stood was remarkable. We made our way up to the top of the kiln, where we were rewarded with breathtaking views.
Looking south along Lunan Bay and catching a glimpse of the Bell Rock Lighthouse in the distance was a memory we'd cherish forever.
On our return to Arbroath we stopped at Lunan Bay to just walk through the dunes and capture the colour of the water as it made its way onto this spectacular shoreline.
