Hi guys, I just replaced my SMG pump motor DIY with very few special tools. Was a challenging job for sure but my car went from SMG pump not priming, stuck in nuetral and no way to turn on the engine to now running and shifting gears just like before. I used DIS and INPA to diagnose and used inpa to run the bleed. This was only my 4th DIY on any car so I'm happy to share any tips (where I bought the pump, how I knew it was the pump, where I got dis and inpa, how to remove the pump from the car, etc.).
Nice job ! I just modified my smg sistem too! My problem was that my pump wasn't turning on ! Im 80% sure its my smg pressure sensor going bad , so what i did i installed a 12v source directly to my smg pump that its operating when i need it ! Problem was solved after $20 dollars of parts and two hours of my labor ! Stiller ship was charging $4500 for a new smg sistem !
jessie morales hello when you say your pump does nt turning on . You mean dosen' t work at all ... because i think i have loss of pressure on mine and the cog light came quikly
Eis Zeit Das Hauptproblem war das die Getriebelampe immer wieder anging wenn es drausen warm/heiss war.Besonders in der Stadt bei Start/Stop an Ampeln. Zuerst kam die Getriebelampe dann die Motorchecklampe und hat mir immer den Gang rausgehauen.
For the hydraulic lines, are the fittings ProBrake’s F2 type 461? And do I need to specify the tube OD and ID? If so, if you would please let me know what they are. I’m gathering parts and making mounting bracket to relocate the pump to like yours and welcome any suggestion or advice that you might have. Many thanks, senord

+Carlos Najera actually i havn't found a source for the pressure sensor. are you sure yours is damaged? actually i have tested 10 pressure sensors from 10 pumps and all were fine.
Hi my smg just gone with the Hot summer. I got a used one and working wellish... so I decided to do the same as you. just a question the fluid box. it seam hard to find. so I will look for a brakes fluid box of a motor bike....I think it should work. thank for the vidio good job

Hi dear I got the internal SMG seal I replace the pump, accumulator and I bought the FKM viton O-Ring kit. I changed all O-rings except Pressure relief valve because I couldn’t find same one on the kit that I purchased. I reassembled the HCU and put it back. I bleed the hydraulic system and take the car for a ride. Every thing looks fine. I scan for error and find p1715 Hydraulic pressure loos in system. So I take the HCU off again and try to find where could cause the pressure loose. But nothing to mark so I need to ask you if you know the tightening torque specs for the following parts 1-Pressure relief valve 2-Temperature sensor 3-Pressure sensor This may help me I couldn’t find the answer on the internet

Awesome information here! I got everything I need to do it, including the specs for the hydraulic lines (1.8m long, 6.3mm OD, 3.2mm ID, type 469 and type 716 fittings in an M12x1 sizing). But I can't seem to find a tank similar to the one you used. I could use the CSL style tank, but those cost $120 or so plus $40 for the bracket and I don't want to spend that much for a simple tank. Do you have any info on where you purchased the tank you used? Thanks!
Hello, after relocation of the system I tried to bleed the system with inpa tool. Whole adaptation goes well but when I changing the gears system do a very noisy things, same type of the noise as the eletric motor but much louder. Inpa write the error number 59. Do you know how can I solve it please?

The car is sold since 6 years to a friend. It worked well all the time. This year the new owner decided to convert it to a manual to save weight on track
yeah i just measure the lines i have and they are 4.4 mm outside dia so that's 3/16 inches do you think that's going to be a problem because the original lines are 1/4 ? like high pressure in the system?
I make the convertion and know the software to bled the air give me a failure in selenoid # 5. can you give an idea to solve the problem the car shift to 1 or R but never moves with closed door!
I am not sure what did u do with the tank. did you put divider inside? is it plastic or metal? can I reuse the smg tank instead? hard to find something for 200 ml tank
This tank is to replace the oem one. I put perforated plates inside to reduse the movement of the fluid inside when you drive through corners. Its a metal tank. You cant reuse the oem tank because its one piece with the intake manifold, and its important that the tank is on a higher level then the hydro unit.
Bmw Mazing I have same car so could you tell me what the smg csl software does please as not got clue when it comes to cars. I know about when these engines get hot it keeps running pump. Seen some M3 owners put resistor in the circuit to help the problem. I have never had this problem as live in Uk and does not get hot like America where thisproblem keeps occuring if nothing done. Anyway be grateful for answer. DAVID
Hi David, the CSL Software makes the car reving when you downshift, and the gearchanges are more sporty but smoother. I recommend it to every smg driver, feels like a complete different car. But it doesnt solve the problems with the heat. Problem is, the hydraulicfluid gets to thin on hot temps. Oil and pump are 20 degrees cooler after relocation

How much did it cost you to replace the smg 1 and install the smg 2? It looks like you did this at home or a friends garage? Also how does the smg 2 feel compared to the smg 1. I've rode in a m6 that has a smg 2 but never drove one but from the passengers experience it's a pretty smooth ride.
Dragonwar it looks like you got a lot of wrong informations. I only relocated the Pump of my M3 E46. All M3 E46 SMG are SMG 2. M3 E36 have SMG1. The M5 E60 und M6 E63 have the SMG 3. All newer models have DKG (doubleclutch). and yes i did this at home in my Garage.
I knew about the others but wow my friend told me that the e46 had a smg 1 thanks for telling me. My friend has the M6 v10 a really rare car since theres only a few of the m6 that are v10. But anyways what you did here in this video did it help a lot with the e46 smg 2 problems I hear about? I'm saving and searching for the right e46.

oh but do you think the automatic will be better than previous use? I don't know how to dive manual or use pedal shifters which I will try to learn before getting the car.

hast du den abs block auch nach oben links gelegt ? oder war der schon da ? , bei mir is die box oben komplett leer und der abs block auch unter dem luftsammler neben dem hydroaggregat (wos schön warm wird -.-)
okay,danke für die antwort, das dsc läuft doch über die bremse oder ? ,dachte das is der abs block , bin grade am überlegen ob ich im zuge des pumpenmotorwechsels die ganze scheisse nach oben lege ,aber da ich keine rennstrecke fahre ist der aufwand wohl eher unnötig und ich werd den einfachen weg wählen und das mit dem flexrohr nach vorne zur bremsbelüftung umsetzen , und nebenbei auch mal die gangarretierung mit den federn und dem reparaturkit von bmw in angriff nehmen , und hoffen das ich jemanden finde der den mist wieder per inpa oder insta entlüften kann
fourtysevenak genau, ist für abs und esp. Ein schlauch zur kühlung wird nix bringen. Hatte den versuch auch gemacht vor dem umplatzieren. Mit einem neuen Pumpenmotor hast du schon mol eine grosse fehlerquelle behoben.
hmmn,okay,danke für den tip , dann kann ich mir das sparen :) ich denke bei mir ist es zusätzlich zu dem alten pumpenmotor auch die gangarretierung, das er den gang immer erst suchen muss zieht den druckspeicher auch leer und die pumpe läuft öfter als sie muss,weil die hydraulik unnötig vor und zurück fährt um den gang einzulegen
fourtysevenak ja die Druckfeder vom Arretierbolzen und der Gangerkennungssensor sind ebenfalls bekannte probleme. Ich hatte immer nur probleme in der Stadt bei stop and go wenn sich die hitze gestaut hat. Über Land gabs nie probleme

Thanks for the instant reply. ...my capacitor in the smg pump motor popped! So i got new motor from ebay. Installed it...and car runs fine...so i thought. About 20 mins driving the light comes on again. But does NOT drop in to N. Read codes and i get 56!!! So do u think that the pump is fine. U think that the heat is the problem???
yes, the biggest problem is the heat, what was the temperature of the hydraulic fluid when the error comes on? the original pentosin fluid for smg has a really bad viscosity on high temperatures.

I dont know the torque of this parts. But they dont need to be very high tightened.

still no overheating, driven on the nürburgring and no problems.

the standard size is 1/4 but i have 3/16 so i don't know if the 3/16 it's going to be a problem because its smaller in diameter
i had a very small inner diameter on my hydrauliclines. so i think they were 3/16

I run 3 times the program,it is interrupted and in failures is selenoid 5 , I try !
What do you think if I take out 1 X 1 of the selenoids ?

but you can also use a brakefluid tank or something like that.

How many times do you bleed the system? Needs a lot of bleeding and teach in after reloction, there is a lot air in the system for some cycles.

You can try. But you have to know. These are 2 pairs of 2 differnt solenoids.

Hi I got I problem here for smg gearbox He slip at 2 to shift 3 and at Meter F☸️N and then free after changing the oil

Ayie Zamri there is maximum 0.6l in the system. for a correct bleed you need a bmw software. it needs some time to get all the air out of the system.

hast du den abs block auch nach oben links gelegt ? oder war der schon da ? , bei mir is die box oben komplett leer und der abs block auch unter dem luftsammler neben dem hydroaggregat (wos schön warm wird -.-)
fourtysevenak hi. Beim VorFacelift sitz das DSC im Batteriekasten. Ich glaub ab Okt. 2002 ist das DSC nicht mehr im Batteriekasten
okay,danke für die antwort, das dsc läuft doch über die bremse oder ? ,dachte das is der abs block , bin grade am überlegen ob ich im zuge des pumpenmotorwechsels die ganze scheisse nach oben lege ,aber da ich keine rennstrecke fahre ist der aufwand wohl eher unnötig und ich werd den einfachen weg wählen und das mit dem flexrohr nach vorne zur bremsbelüftung umsetzen , und nebenbei auch mal die gangarretierung mit den federn und dem reparaturkit von bmw in angriff nehmen , und hoffen das ich jemanden finde der den mist wieder per inpa oder insta entlüften kann

Ein schlauch zur kühlung wird nix bringen. Hatte den versuch auch gemacht vor dem umplatzieren.
Mit einem neuen Pumpenmotor hast du schon mol eine grosse fehlerquelle behoben.
hmmn,okay,danke für den tip , dann kann ich mir das sparen :) ich denke bei mir ist es zusätzlich zu dem alten pumpenmotor auch die gangarretierung, das er den gang immer erst suchen muss zieht den druckspeicher auch leer und die pumpe läuft öfter als sie muss,weil die hydraulik unnötig vor und zurück fährt um den gang einzulegen
fourtysevenak ja die Druckfeder vom Arretierbolzen und der Gangerkennungssensor sind ebenfalls bekannte probleme.
Ich hatte immer nur probleme in der Stadt bei stop and go wenn sich die hitze gestaut hat. Über Land gabs nie probleme

...my capacitor in the smg pump motor popped!
So i got new motor from ebay.
Installed it...and car runs fine...so i thought.
About 20 mins driving the light comes on again. But does NOT drop in to N. Read codes and i get 56!!!
So do u think that the pump is fine.

yes, the biggest problem is the heat, what was the temperature of the hydraulic fluid when the error comes on? the original pentosin fluid for smg has a really bad viscosity on high temperatures.
