Just back from a small walked up syndicate shoot myself, mixed bag today, but the best of it was out with my new cocker, goes without saying faults to be worked on haha. Didn’t think it could get any better until I got to watch your new video Nick, all the best from southern Scotland for the remaining season Nick.
Nice to have a good retriever for those cripples and runners. Cock pheasants tend to only fly when they have to and the sight of a strong flushing dog is an encouragement to leave in a hurry. I always found the hens to lay flat and hold much longer, almost to the point that you might step on them. Your video stirs up many memories of long days hunting over my Springers. Exhilarating to say the least.
It’s sad to see the old intro gone, I can thank my younger days of enthusiasm to that theme song and pheasants shouting lol however I’m excited for the new chapter? Great to see you back out again Nick.
Funny how our older dogs start doing weird stuff, Ted running in to you when you make a shot, could be worse, Archie picks up a rabbit on a retrieve and looks for the nearest water to immerse it in before in his own good time brings it to me🙄🙄🤣🤣. Good video, thanks Howie
No Idea what was going on with Ted, to be honest I haven’t done very much with him after his illness and concentrating on Twig. I am sure I can get this sorted with a few refresher session. Cockers …are they very fully trained 🤔
Yes I am sure you will get Ted sorted, you are a far better trainer than me, I bet after Teds illness you are just so glad to have him still out working and on the couch at home @@Pettycordgundogs
Tell us about the second dog, looks like a black Springer or a mix. I trained my dog myself, to hunt in range, quarter and cover their ground well and steady to shot. Both were excellent retrievers. Your dog looks full under control, hunts well and retrieves well. Every thing you want in a hunting dog. How old is he and did you ever trial him? A real joy to watch.👍🇨🇦👨🦳
He is a blue roan cocker spaniel, 4 years old and no I don't trial any of my dogs, its something I'm just not interested in. That said I do try and get them to a high standard of training....cheers Nick
Yep sorry about the camera angle, it got knocked as I got out of the truck and I didn’t realise until I started editing, it will be sorted before the next video. We have an open and closed season which runs from September to end of January…it does vary by species. Hope this helps cheers Nick
Sorry but some of your shooting gives the sport a bad name. At around 9mins 20 seconds you swing through the line. That is frowned upon with a closed gun here.
Thanks for your comment….first of all there wasn’t a “line” I was in the field by myself the other Guns were in the small copse to my right. The chap that you see in the very top of the video walked out after I had shot the bird. Safety is of utmost importance and we have been doing this for a long time and we take the utmost care to make sure we know where everyone is. You are quite right swinging through a line with a closed gun is not acceptable. I hope this clarifies things. All the best Nick
@Pettycordgundogs thanks for getting back to me Nick. It looked like the guy was standing to your left with his dog sitting at his feet as you swung through but as you say it wasn't the case. I've had a gun swinging through me and its not nice. Needless to say he was never back on our syndicate. Fieldsports are under enough pressure without shooting accidents adding to the bad press. Hope you've had a good season. Kindest regards. Simon.
Great film - I really enjoy seeing how you are working the dogs
Great stuff !
Getting better each season.👍

What gun is that nick?
Great hunting dog there
camera was angled bit low. Question is season regulated by a game councilor other authority body, and open closed season for certain game birds?
