Ruffed Grouse Hunting in NEW Areas! (What to Look For)

- Our favorite month of the year has arrived, October! It's still early in the Ruffed Grouse and Woodcock season, which can make getting shots on birds tough. The Brittany's and I head out to explore some new areas, and I talk a little bit about what I'm looking for when hunting a new area. We we're able to find some birds, and capitalize on a couple really good shooting opportunities!

Thanks for the support and following along!
man i love these videos! Keep them coming! Our season in NC starts October 14th and im itching!
Safe travels and best of luck this season!
thanks for the good info, and great footage, great pups
Appreciate that 👍🏻
Really appreciate you talking about the cover you look for when going out. I struggle to keep up with the grouse’s transitions as the season progresses. Great video and great dog work. Those pups are just awesome. I’ll be back up for a weekend hunt this coming weekend and full week later in October and can’t wait. Btw, nice shot on that tree bird and letting it fly. I usually end up missing those freebies, LOL! Thanks again!
Thank you! Safe travels and best of luck!
its Uplander season! hell ya brother!
Cheers! 👍🏻
Thanks for another great video. It's tough getting good footage of birds. Can't wait to get out soon
Getting a shot at a ruff is hard enough, getting it on camera is doubling down and can be challenging in its own way for sure!
Nice video ..... I've got A year and A half yr old french Brittany that goes crazy birdy when out in the woods, its what she's bred for 🐶
Thank you 👍🏻 good luck to you and your pup this Fall!
Great dog work. And I'm also seeing way more pointed birds up in the trees this year. They like to keep us guessing.
Thank you, they certainly do keep us guessing! Good luck 👍🏻
@UplanderLifestyle Thanks & same to you. Looking forward to the leaves coming down soon here in NE MN. Then I go back to find the birds we didn't get to shoot at so far. The sound of your safety going back on was all too familiar so far this season. Thanks for the entertainment while I'm home with the kids today.
nice video !!! keep them coming !!! Fox is a nice looking pup 👍
It's been years since I've grouse hunted in West Virginia . Birds got scarce there . Always wanted to hunt farther north for them .
Fox says, “Drop one down!” 😆
“Birds up here”
Great video Cliff really enjoyed the hunt and dog work. Fox looked like a deer leaping through them ferns lol. I found some grouse in the ferns early season and the ferns were so wet on top I was soaked walking around in them but the grouse were dry cause of the canopy there was probably 6. I think it depends on how hungry they are in the morning whether they stay in the trees. You'd be surprised how dry it is under there and they just walk around feeding on what they want. How far out do you let your dogs hunt in the grouse woods? Good luck on your next hunt and be safe.
I agree, it depends on how hungry they are, they will risk it for the biscuit! That morning though, I did not mention we had 2 hours of rain before the sun came up, and the woods were pretty wet, more than just what the morning dew usually produces. I do think that played a part in it and the woods were wetter than normal, even down to the forest floor, and it was keeping the birds off the ground IMO. Both birds crops were full of aspen leaves and buds from that morning, so they were finding plenty of food up in the canopy without having to drop down to the forest floor for food, which is what I think they were doing to avoid getting wet. I’ll let my dogs range as far as they want, as long as they are working with me to the front. For the most part, they work within 150 yards of me. They shorten up in thicker cover and start to range out in thinner cover.
Amazing information. Subscribed!
Another banger! Love your videos and the explanation of the why! Quick question…. What pants do you usually wear? Trying to find decent light weight pants that are waterproof. Thank!
I wear a pair of Sitka work pants. They’re super light weight and nice to wear this early part of season. They’re not waterproof, and I’ve yet to ever find a pair of ‘waterproof’ pants that don’t get wet, unless they’re Goretex. My counter to this is I usually don’t go out until the woods are mostly dry, the birds don’t move around much or come down from roost if the woods are wet - whether it’s from rain or the morning dew.
I can't wait till pheasant season opens here. First year with an EB of my own.
Good times ahead! Best of luck 👍🏻
@@UplanderLifestyle he’s a trinity dog so I’m probably going to be the one who let’s us down.
That’s tough cover to get clear shots
At last a new one,,,,,,,My Brittney iching to see what happens,,,,,,,
Thanks for following along, best of luck out there!
Great video! What are you wearing for ear protection? Thinking about trying something out.
Great vid! 👍
Thank you!
got my first bird if the season here in northern Maine a few days back. its been a tough go so far birds have been very spooky and its been to thick to connect a shot but the seasons still young!
I can relate to that! Shooting opportunities will only get better over the next few weeks - best of luck!
Really enjoy your videos. If you don't mind me asking, what camera do you use to capture your hunts?
Thank you, Go pro 10
Great video! What breeder did you get your britts from?
Do you train your dogs? Great videos
Thank you! Yes I do.
First of all, THANK YOU for putting these out. I really enjoyed them last year as well.
I'm heading up to hunt the Atlanta, MI area this week.....leaving right after work on Thursday. I have a friend riding up with me (we both have Brittany's). To top it off, Jimmy Gretzinger from Michigan Out of Doors TV (PBS) and his wife will be filming us on Friday and Saturday. Stoked.
if you where a hunter you would not need to watch a loser do it !!!!
I appreciate that! Best of luck and safe travels this coming week, that should be a lot of fun! Look forward to watching the episode when it airs.
Love your videos and that hat is awesome! Where do i get one or 3
Thank you! They are available on uplanderlifestyle.com

Thank you!
Just found your podcast on Spotify. Do you have any plans on continuing that in the future?
I’ve wanted to, just haven’t found the time for it. Maybe one of these days… thanks for following along!
We missed your hunting my friend where are you long time no see
Got a little bit later start to our season this year, but we’re back! More videos to come, thanks 👍🏻
I have a question... being from southern Ohio I have never hunted grouse or woodcock but both my dad and grandpa have. (Mainly grandpa) what do you look for when you are looking for woodcock? What time of day do you hunt? I know the terrain is different here but we don't have hardly any grouse numbers but some say there are a few in the hills. I just want to get out in the woods and try something different!
I would be looking for thick, brushy areas close to water. Woodcock feed on worms in the soil, so they need soil that has moisture in it for them to be able to probe for worms with their bills. Good luck!
I have a ten week old female Brittany Spaniel. In your experience when is the earliest reasonable time to take her out on an actual hunt.
Any additional advise would be appreciated! Thanks
normally when they are sitting there perfect and fly I whiff hahaha
Excellent video! Love the chat about the cover..
Thank you!
Below or above the bridge?
Where do you get the information on how old the cuts are?
Look up Scout and Hunt maps on TH-cam and you'll see what they offer. There maps give you a ton of information cut sizes, year cut different timber around the cuts. You can find a ton of land to hunt and info. Good luck

What state are you hunting in?
Great video, really informative. Now only if you could teach me to shoot better.........
What r those stakes your using as tie outs they look nice and heavy
They are Lion country stake outs
What breeder would you recommend for a Brittany?
I don't know but I've seen a few dog hunters this year, most of them had brittany's but they were mostly flushing, completely out of control and untrained, one guy had 3-4 of them running around barking up a storm.... lol...
Is this in Canada?
No, Great Lakes region, US.
@@UplanderLifestyle ahh okay thanks man
Ni por todo el oro del mundo saldria a cazar con usted. Pegarle a un arbol sin siquiera poner en blanco al ave. Es de terror usted para cazar. Cuidate perrito por favor.
YEAH VIEWERS GROUSE ARE REALLY SMART !!!!! LOL.....
I’m sure they have a higher IQ than you.
@@UplanderLifestyle go back to your office work !!!!!myou can only fool these idiots on youtube !!!! and your wife !!!!!
I don't need to hide/fool anything from viewers, or my wife for that matter... what you see is what you get. I've never claimed to be the best or have the best dogs, just a guy that enjoys his dogs and what he does... and I show it all here. You probably don't even train dogs for a living, so enjoy your day job, have a good one boomer. Maybe one day you'll be able to comment with a full sentence.
@@UplanderLifestyle YOUR A HOLE , GO BACK TO YOUR OFFICE JOB , AND I WILL TRAIN THE BEST DOGS EVER !!!! MAKE YOUR HOME MOVIES FOR YOUR FAMILY . AND STOP TRYING TO PRETEND YOUR NOT DOING THIS ON A EGO TRIP !!!!!! BORING WATCHING A GUY SHOOTING AT SPACE . THE VIEWERS CANT SEE ANYTHING IN THE GROUSE WOODS , SO PLEASE STOP IT , .....
Great vid. That looks like some tough terrain to hunt. I'm here in the AZ desert where Gambels quail season opens next week. It's totally different habitat. Cactus and washes. Gambels are runners. Then they flush out of range. I'm planning to get up to Utah to ruffie country next season. Thanks for posting this, so fun and great info.
