    Only few people get that efficiency is better than higher charging speeds in every regard. Lower cost, better for the environment, less time at slower charger for same distance, less charging infrastructure needed…
    Efficiency is king in EV territory.

    Bjorn, induction motor is by definition asynchronous. Today you have learned that there is a third type of motor called EESM which only BMW and Renault/Nissan use. But it will be used by more EVs in the future. Siemens, Mahle, Continental now offer or are developing EESM motors.

    • @oskarzgoa8428
      @oskarzgoa8428 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, I found it also. EESM like Renault Zoe. It has no permanent magnet, but 3p AC stator and DC powered coiled rotor. It has very good efficiency, and didn't need rare earth metals such as neodymium for magnets. Only disadvantage is that rotor needs slip rings on the shaft which will theoretically tear down in time. We will see

    Although the weather was warm, the results were pretty impressive. It’s not as good range as in some more expensive cars, but you cannot get everything, do you.

    Got to test drive a Premier preproduction model today. The test drive was in a closed course but still very impressed with the way the car handles. There is no one pedal driving but the estep works well. The car interior is beautiful. The marketing guy drove it on city streets and freeway (california bay area). The ride was quiet and smooth over the potholes. I was very impressed with the car. We have a tesla model 3 SR+ but will seriously consider buying this when it gets here in November.

    Did a test drive of the 63kwh version today and we fell in love. After 18 months of looking and being unsure, disagreeing over choices etc., my husband and I are finally in agreement that this will likely be the car we buy. Of course, it isn't all smooth sailing, we both love the car but disagree on whether it is smarter to buy the 63kwh or 87kwh. Hoping you are testing this fully in Norway in the next couple of days to give us some more information, Bjorn, and help solve the first world dilemma we are in!!

    It's an externally exited synchronous motor. It lacks the punch of a pmsm but it can be controlled via software anf therefore be more efficient on motorways and you don't need rare earth magnets.

    Could be one of the most efficient cars in it's class which is I guess the crossover class of ID4, Ioniq5, Mustang Mach-e, Skoda Enyaq and Model Y. KIA EV6 is a bit lower so I wouldn't take it in. KIA EV6 is more ID3 class (KIA EV6 height 1,55m, ID 3 height 1,57m). Well done so far Nissan. Good first impression.

    • @fraserreddick8828
      @fraserreddick8828 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The EV6 is not in the ID3 class - it is a much bigger car and very comparable to the others listed even if slightly lower (I would call several of them raised hatchbacks rather than crossovers but they all fill the same niche). The efficiency of the Ariya is not looking promising - the smaller battery is of course a lot lighter so will be more efficient, but WLTP figures for the larger battery are poor and drag coefficient is 0.3 which is huge so it will struggle at highway speeds (which is where range is important). The top model is rated at 285 miles which compared to the EV6 (for example) is not great as the EV6 is 300, faster and has a 10kwh smaller battery! Charging time is very poor as well. UK ranges quoted, will vary in other countries. Shame as I like a lot of things about it.

    • @Macmonkey1000
      @Macmonkey1000 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bjornnyland Externally excited synchronous motor according to an article from a few months ago, maybe Nissan reps aren't very technical or the article was wrong. Renault uses them on zoe so its possible they're going the same route with the Ariya.
      The rotor gets a magnetic field via slip rings and brushes, which is a slight disadvantage but it avoids rare earth magnet supply issues and is more efficient than an induction type.

      @altoclef6688 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From your latter comment I suppose you are in the US. If you were in Europe (most countries anyway) it would be a no-brainer to trade your Leaf in since you only get one-phase AC charging and CHAdeMO fast charging. Since you usually find three-phase supply with lower amps per phase in Europe both of these means "slow charging". Additionally, CHAdeMO means "few chargers and no expansion of the network".
      In the US I suppose you have one phase supplies with high amps so you can make use of the full capacity of the OBC, I have no idea of the current or future status of CHAdeMO, so things may look better for the Leaf there.
