Great video, I have loved Rastan since its launch in '86! One fun technical note... The smoothly animated swinging vines seen in the game were achieved with a particle effect. They even show it off by making the separate pixel particles different colors. And it was actually a reused effect that they created for Jungle King/Hunt several years earlier!
Rastan was the first arcade machine I put my quarter into at Captain Video in 1987. The soundtrack hooked me in immediately when I heard it blaring louder than any other cabinet at the time.
Crazy Story, The first time I played this amazing atmospheric game I also met Frank Stallone in Astoria Queens NYC, Yes Sly's brother in the same Deli that had the cabinet I was playing Rastan in 1987 and he came in the deli where I played it, my mom started talking to him because she instantly recognized him, and he had a music school on Steinway street, I met him and told him he was a great singer in that street scene in Rocky and he was a nice guy. I went back into playing Rastan and the music it stuck with me. Years later I bought a rastan cabinet from a warehouse in Coney Island for 300, I had it for four years until I sold it and later bought a slim Galaga arcade cabinet being I had moved and needed something slimmer, I regret that decision. Anyway this game's music is burned into me, This is when Taito hit the ball out of the park and from that point had a slew of games with awesome music and audio, and wow what a bassy cabinet when you put a coin in and hear that Damm slam, great years for Taito
That soundtrack, dude. Also, it was my all time favorite arcade game outside of the original four-player ninja turtle arcade game. Every summer in the 1980s, my family went to the Keys to hunt lobster. We stayed on a campground island called Sunshine Key, and there was an arcade there, and this was the game I played the most. I remember that arcade perfectly, and where it was. I'll always have a soft spot for Rastan.
Ah one of my all time favorites! A shining example of how to squeeze every ounce of goodness from the limited resources available to arcade systems. Even today I'm still amazed at the sound and what they were able to do with it. I have the tunes downloaded and listen to them now and then when I want a pick me up. The animations and colors were all top notch and hold up for arcade games even today. This was one of the games I worked at mastering as a kid and eventually could one-life the game. I was able to do this with several other games (Black Tiger, Akari Warriors, Spy Hunter, Discs of Tron, etc etc).....yup, spent tons of time in arcades. Great video! Thanks for making it :)

Thank you for saying Taito correctly! Many people don’t know the proper way. My local 7-11 on Lincoln Ave in Chicago was a test site for video and pinball. They had Rastan there which I believe was the Japanese version or test. The bats never came out if you stalled anywhere. This is one of my favorite arcade games with the whole package! Thank you for doing a more in depth vid on this classic. Keep up the great work as always! Maybe see ya at a future MGC.

Rastan 1 is cool. I always wanted the port for the SMSystem, but never found it in stores back then. A tough arcade game. I remember reading about the rope vine in the C64 version being a game breaking glitch. The sequel was a step down but the 3rd one was good. Great coverage of all the Rastan games' history, Patman, thanks!
The fact that the Apple IIgs had the best home port was unheard of. It was in class of its own on that system. What John Brooks pulled off, with no sprite or scrolling hardware at all, was amazing.

There is as bug in Rastan where if you jump right on a rope and there is a wall immediately to the right of the rope you will jump up and then grab the rope again ascending much faster (does not work the other way around) Also when you are airborne you do more damage to enemies then when you are on the ground. If you jump toward the annoying first boss and strike it in the air it dies in three hits that was my strategy for dealing with it back in the day. EDIT: I vaguely recall that most enemies take more damage when struck in the head area as well so it's possible it dies that fast due to stacking airborne damage with increased damage from the head hitzone.
Quarter muncher indeed. I wish I was better at this game back in the day because it was so cool. Music and sound effects are indeed top notch and the thing I always thought were the best features of it. Thanks again for another video of a great game.
I love this game. I still play it at a local arcade on retro arcades with multiple games on each of them. The rope jumps in round 2 over the fire are ridiculously hard but otherwise great game.
Rastan is one of my all time favourite arcade games as for the cool graphics, excellent tight gameplay and that amazing soundtrack. Have you done a video on the R-TYPE game series as that is my all time favourite arcade shoot-em up! Thank you for all your amazing in-depth videos, a real joy to view.
You don't jump higher with a longer button push and there are 7 songs. Opening song (not in the US version) Main theme, castle, boss fight, level clear, final boss fight and the ending theme.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I only do 2.5D remakes. Every young kid game developer uses pixels these days, I could rom-hack the original instead of using a modern engine, if I wanted just that. I got tired of pixels in the 90's! 😁

Excellent info, thanks
played it back in the 80's when i was a teen, now 50 and still a favourite, though i find it hard to get to 4th stage now days.
Quarter muncher indeed. I wish I was better at this game back in the day because it was so cool. Music and sound effects are indeed top notch and the thing I always thought were the best features of it. Thanks again for another video of a great game.
I know I spent a lot of quarters on this game. Thank you very much
I loved the box art for Rastan. It was so evocative of the time.
Very cool, it really was
The Rastan theme that lives in my head is the Martin Galway version.
Thanks, I appreciate that. I have not done a video on the R type games yet
You don't jump higher with a longer button push and there are 7 songs. Opening song (not in the US version) Main theme, castle, boss fight, level clear, final boss fight and the ending theme.
Epic video as always!
Rastan was a very memorable and interesting game. It is one of my top favorite arcade games of all time, and on my list of homage re-makes.
A 2D remake would be pretty cool to see
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I only do 2.5D remakes. Every young kid game developer uses pixels these days, I could rom-hack the original instead of using a modern engine, if I wanted just that. I got tired of pixels in the 90's! 😁
