    Excellent lecture. I’ve found some other Philosophy lectures that I’ve been listening to through a couple o years and this one adds perfectly to what I’ve learned. A philosophy teacher said in a podcast: “Philosophy is the tool you have to detect imbecility”. I wish everyone had it in their toolbox.

    There is the claim that critical thinking cannot be taught. What's your opinion on that? And do you view critical thinking as an Art, or Science?

    • @allandidonato
      @allandidonato  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think critical thinking can be taught, at least the elements necessary for developing the skills. Some of it is common sense, but common sense often leads us to fall into some big traps. It's useful for being able to see the traps ahead of us and avoid them. Logic was one of the best courses I ever took, and it really made a difference in my own thinking. And I think that logic is both an art and a science - at least in the classical understanding of science as knowledge and art as a way of production.

    • @1995yuda
      @1995yuda 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@allandidonato Thank you for these 3(one's on a second video) very thoughtful responses to my questions! I really appreciate it. Are you familiar with Dr. Sean McFate? The reason I asked if critical thinking is an art vs a science is because of his video on the subject here on TH-cam called "what is strategic thought?". I wonder what you think of it, if you're familiar. I am so happy I've bumped into your channel.

    • @1995yuda
      @1995yuda 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Theseustoo Astyages Considering that all sciences sprung from Philosophy, and that all Philosophers were Mystics until Plato, it is indeed clear how the Sciences and the Arts are inter-linked.
      I, too, wait for the day when we return to our natural greatness, to the so called "Participatory Age", instead of our "Observable" one. Where participation mystique is present again in our daily lives. To be exact, my vision goes even before the first Philosophers, but that's a conversation for another day...

    • @1995yuda
      @1995yuda 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Theseustoo Astyages Mysticism deals with alterations of consciousness that give people meaning and a sense of belonging to the world as well as helps them deal with the fear of death. I don't see any reason to escape such things and I don't believe that's what we've been doing at all. A good day to you, too.

    • @NormanDadzie
      @NormanDadzie 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Really?

    • @allandidonato
      @allandidonato  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      An opinion is just a belief, and a belief can be about factual things, like that the earth revolves around the sun, etc. or about non-factual things, like the yumminess of vanilla ice cream. So an opinion isn't the opposite of a fact.

    What, then, is the distinction between Epistemology and Critical thinking? Is there one?

    • @allandidonato
      @allandidonato  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There is a distinction in that critical thinking is an analysis of how we think, giving attention to the unconscious influences as well as the conscious techniques we can use to do it well. Epistemology as a philosophy utilizes critical and logical thinking, but it is foremost about the nature of belief, knowledge, etc. What is knowledge, how does it differ from belief, when are we justified in saying we "know" x, etc.?
