That was a super fun flying video. Watching you grow into a better pilot , you allow us to see your gaffes and your more frequent triumphs. You have developed “ air sense “ a term I just read about. In my opinion your not some supernatural natural pilot , what you do is proper prior planning prevents piss poor performance. Just like Military training , you have an extensive pre flight. Followed by in your case a video addition to a normal de brief. You are hard on yourself at times , something I relate too in spades. It’s such a thrill watching you. Grandpa would be so proud
As an instructor myself, I love Martin’s teaching method. Also helps that Steve is a great student lol. Favorite quote so far on this video: “speed is life” I’d love to hear when Apex is ready to go because I definitely could use more float experience
I agree with you about Martin's methods. His trial by fire approach to a natural is very similar to how I go about teaching my own students. The only difference is I teach from the right seat of a car, not a plane - although I would prefer the latter.
There is something about your videos that brings me to a calm place, I am not and probably will never will be a pilot but I really enjoy your measured, thoughtful, considerate presentation. Thanks.
Martin hit the nail straight on the head calling you a "professional student". It really hit me how well that description fits and what a compliment it is, love it. =)
Great to see a proper Flight Chops video again! The training, warbird and aerobatic videos are the best. TH-cam is full of avaiation videos/vlogs these days but none come close to yours when you produce them like this!!
See the chops smash the like button...another great video sir. Dehaviland Beaver on floats.....ohhh the sounds of a radial...heck even the starter on that thing sounds cool.
Hey Steve, It looks like your having a good time in that float plane. I remember back in 1966, a friend asked me to come with him to Ft. Lauderdale, to put some time on Overhauled engines on an Apache. It was nice, because we went from airport to airport, and he let me fly, he was also and Instructor. One day we flew to the Bahama's, and the next, we drove to Miami and took some float lessons on a Piper Cub on floats. He and I wound out with a couple hours each. When we got back home, a bunch of us bought a Republic SeaBee, and I was the only one with water time. I found it easy to fly the sea plane, and ended up with over 250 hours water time, without ever getting my rating. I've posted a couple other times when you were learning to fly a Stearman. I had one for twenty years, and have over a couple thousand hrs in it. I really miss it, but age has caught up to me and my dream is over. My wish, when a youngster during WW2, was to fly an airplane, but it took a while when the situation arrived for ground-school in the winter of 1964. After ground school I went down and took my written test,(without any flight time) and passed it somehow. First soloed in a little over 8 hours, on June 9tth, my first lesson on June first. Many experiences and adventures, and many different airplanes, and hours I can't even account for. It only lasted for twenty years, but oh the fun I had! Good luck and God Bless.
Long-time viewer, first-time commenter 😂 I’ve been so excited for this series-floats are my dream! Can’t wait for the Beaver checkout. Thanks for all the incredible, authentic, and educational content and helping us pass the time during this wild times.
FlightChops I’m looking to start my flight training at CZBA when it’s safe and I’m able to do so. Getting the notification that you-and all the other amazing aviation TH-camrs-have uploaded something new really motivates me to keep saving and studying! Cheers to you and the family. Hope you’re staying safe, sane, and happy.
I love the idea of float flying, there isn't much opportunity for it here in the UK so when I saw the trailer for a series on float flying some time ago I was excited. Great to see it finally appearing on your channel, even if it isn't in circumstances you really want. Looking forward to this series 💗
Every time I see a video of seaplane flying back where I grew up, I get the itch to go for my floatplane rating. Great episode and looking forward to more!
Just (water) landed on this channel today and I can't say enough how much I enjoy it-great content, great editing, that feeling of watching people doing what they love and know all about. Mad props!!!
Been watching your videos for a few years, but this is my favorite one. I lived in Big Lake, AK the first few years of my life, and my dad owned an aeronca champ there, so seeing the town in this video was a nice surprise! Thanks for all you do for aviation.
First thing I've watched today that doesn't involve politics. Thanks. People keep telling me to do this but there isn't much for training where I live. I would love to fly the Beaver though. Nice flying!
Thanks! And yeah - I've got a ton of raw footage to edit from the world before the current mess - and I am looking forward to sharing it for a positive distraction while we get things back to normal.
Love the video! I had unsubscribed because all your videos had turned into things I could never do. Well I'm back and loving this. Just got my PPL last year and floats is on my list for someday!
Greetings from Johannesburg, I stumbed upon your channel yesterday and spent the next 4 hours watching your various videos, Fantastic, Thank you for the way you explain everything so that a non pilot can understand and follow.I have sent your channel details to all the chaps in my flightsim club.
I would love to fly on a seaplane. I took a trip to Australia last fall, and took a boat ride out to Whitsunday Island. When we docked, I saw a seaplane and was completely enamored! First thing I did when I got off the boat was head straight over to the airplane to take a look.
This was a treat! I get goosebumps every time I watch the professional come out. I loved when you picked the skinniest lake ever and thought how are you going to land there. Very impressive! Thank you Steve! I can imagine you must have been so excited to release footage like this on which you sit for a long time. Also, when you said "you don't need to see another take-off"; well... We never get enough! I got seriously excited when you got baptized by fire :-D That was a thrill!
Nice video Steve, mixing aviation and landscapes is always a win. Martin is one of those humans you would want to meet once in your life, looks like a very cool guy. Nice piloting btw! Greetings
Awesome! Glad you made it to Alaska. I live in Palmer which is pretty close to Big Lake. Flying to the glacier this Sunday with a couple of friends and off to Talkeetna.
Wow that’s so cool, as a person living in New Zealand and around the ocean and lakes I’m used to being on a boat, but float flying seams like such a different experience and opportunity when it comes to the aviation world. Thanks flight cops for another great video.👍👍
As a CFI I loved watching how he did the ROE briefing. Perhaps you can explain in further detail his style of briefing a training flight either textually or in a video? As always, amazing content!
I did my float rating last summer, probably around the same time you did yours, and got my SES issued. Watching this video is definitely helping keep my skills in the air craft sharp so hopefully I can return to it some time soon! I look forward to the next parts of the series!
How awesome you've found a DeHavilland to train in! I love everything DeHavilland. They are iconic airplanes. I am excited to watch the rest of this series!
Congrats Steve !! Your new earned water wings. Nicely done !! Looking forward to the followups on this. You are keeping my Dreams alive. Water birds out of Kenmore Air from Kenmore WA. fly over daily. Some day we will meet. ~ your neighbor
Freaking finally! As a seaplane nut I've been waiting for this for so long! Awesome Content! I guess I'll have to head up to Alaska and pay those guys a visit at some point.
Great video Steve! It's so funny, my "Alaska float plane rating" video (filmed about 3 years ago) is about 85% finished in the edit. It was an epic adventure for sure.
I love it. I wish you could have done more training in Lakeland fla. the sea plane base is awesome. I used to go there at lunch and watch and help if I could.
I lived on a sailboat for a short period. Docking was the hardest part, even with the engine, but I think docking a floatplane is harder. A boat engine has reverse, lots more inertia to fight wind, and no wings to whack... Nice work Man
Awesome video! This was a super exciting and inspiring video! Great job with the editing as well, can tell it must have been a massive project!!! Thank you for sharing :-D
Thanks for posting this Steve. I've been waiting for this one for a long time. I feel the pain with the editing. I've got a my own float flying video that I've been slowly editing for a year now. It's a long tedious process.
Spent almost a year working in Alaska, where I read of a (disturbing) number of small plane crashes. Granted, there were wildfires to worry about, but, now I see why there were so many! Soo many things to take into account that a pilot wouldn't have to worry about in the lower 48.
Good job! I like that PA-12. That one is painted almost exactly like mine (but mine isn't red or as pretty) and you flew right over my former cabin on Big Lake just south of the VOR.
Great job, Steve!! This rating is near the very top of my aviation to-do list and I would love to do it in Alaska! Looking forward to seeing your additional videos from this trip!
I got my float ticket in a hand propped Cub in Florida. Spent a lot of time lake hoppin and going for those $100 hamburgers all year round. Tried fishing but the mess was too much Great way to enjoy flying on the cheap where there is plenty of water
Awesome! I want to go up to AK for a float rating so bad. Maybe next Summer. Apex Aviation sounds like exactly who I would want to use. I don't want to do the 4 hour 2 day Cub course, I want to actually learn something and have some fun while up there doing it properly

Thanks so much for this feedback Mike. I really appreciate that you’ve been along for the ride!
I too loved the training methods Martin brought to the table!
Martin is awesome .. and i always thought altitude was life? My father flew the P-5 Marlin big difference though
Red Six either way works because you get more energy both ways (kinetic vs potential) and either can be traded for the other
I’m a simple man, I see a FlightChops notification and I click! Float planes are awesome!
Boom! Notification squad represented - I appreciate that - lots more of this coming so keep that goofy bell clicked or whatever it takes :P
Oh I’ll be there! I just got my licence so the next phase of learning is about to start!
Flight chops videos with a "contact" or "clear prop" are the best.
That’s a great instructor! He really puts you at ease while keeping you on your toes. Beautiful and enjoyable video FlightChops!
The Flight Instructor is great, nice, calm, relaxed.
Loved the more real-time style editing of this video.
Glad you liked it!
Good job bud!! Love the production quality! Great job on the edit!!!!!!
Thanks Mikey! I’ve been slammed with this edit, but I’m gonna do watch your golden DC-3 video tonight :)
Great job Steve, and great video!
My first ever takeoff was in my Dad’s PA12 on floats from the back seat, 30 yrs before I got my pilot’s license. This takes me back.
In my opinion, this is one of your best video till today.
Thank you for brightening my day during this goddamn quarantine.
Cheers from Italy.
Everytime I think the subject of the video will be of less interest to me, you always prove me wrong! The quality of your editing is just amazing!
Wow, thanks man - that's the best kinda feedback :)

Being grounded right now is rough. Thanks for the upload. Living vicariously through videos is keeping me going!
Glad to help - I'm in the same spot - watching and editing this footage that I shot a while back is cheering me up, so I am happy to share!

Hey ...well this is the content we all need right now. Superb video - took me back to pre lockdown for a blissful 19:39! 👏

Great video Steve, really enjoyed this one, and can't wait for more FloatChops'!

Last words: Access to that amazing and beautiful beaver. Spoken like a true gentleman.
Oh flying floatplanes in Alaskan skies - my idea of heaven!
First thing I've watched today that doesn't involve politics. Thanks. People keep telling me to do this but there isn't much for training where I live. I would love to fly the Beaver though. Nice flying!

@@FlightChops the distraction is appreciated. It's some high quality escapism for me, so thank you so much for doing it.
Absolutely incredible. Another fantastic video. What a beautiful place to fly.
Dude, you are living the dream. Please keep it coming, awesome!
Excellent video, love a PA-12 on floats. Sweet airplane.
Fascinating stuff. I'm only a gamer but really enjoy all your adventures in learning
totally awesome

If I didn't want my float rating before, I certainly want to get it now.

Wish I could like this video twice! Great stuff! Can’t wait for my chance to visit Apex!

cant wait to see part 2 and the beaver !
The Beaver is gonna be part 4 :P.
There's a fair bit of training between now and then :P
One of my dreams to get my float plane rating. Was hoping to get it for my 40th birthday. Well it will have to wait a bit. Thanks for the video.
I love the training too, nice to here from this instructor that your "a natural pilot", I caught that. Must make you feel proud.

My first visit to the channel, and its about seaplanes! Heck yes! What man doesnt like flying and boating?

Delightful video Steve. Well done, and your instructor was fun too. Awesome.
Glad you enjoyed it - sorry the podcast got cancelled the other week - we can try again some time
Great video Steve! It's so funny, my "Alaska float plane rating" video (filmed about 3 years ago) is about 85% finished in the edit. It was an epic adventure for sure.
Thing i like about your videos is your attitude and the lack of BS dramatics.
Awesome video, we did an Alaska cruise last September. It was cool to see Alaska from the air. Keep up the great work.
Yay! I'm loving this series and it hasn't become a series yet!
What a great episode! Thank you Steve!
I love it. I wish you could have done more training in Lakeland fla. the sea plane base is awesome. I used to go there at lunch and watch and help if I could.

Going for my ASES in about a week in north florida, this series came just in time
Awesome video! This was a super exciting and inspiring video! Great job with the editing as well, can tell it must have been a massive project!!! Thank you for sharing :-D
Never desired to get my floatplane cert but wow! If I could pass my medical I would consider this in a heartbeat!
FlightChops is Alfa Numeric #1
Thank you Flight Chops! Very entertaining and informative!
Great video. Martin, you are an awesome instructor.

Awesome. Instructor had to be former mil. Look at that board! Always great content Steve.
"Access to that amazingly beautiful Beaver!" ... demonetized!
A wet beaver is a happy beaver!
Holy Cow! Steve we need a couple desktop backgrounds made from some of these amazing shots. Specifically 0:49.
Been really looking forward for this video for so long man. Thanks for posting, great video as alaways
Good job! I like that PA-12. That one is painted almost exactly like mine (but mine isn't red or as pretty) and you flew right over my former cabin on Big Lake just south of the VOR.
Can't wait for the beaver! Love the sound of that thing
So freakin cool. I can’t wait to see the Beaver!
So great! Man this looks like a lot of fun. Great job FlightChops!
What a beautiful area! Living on a lake is probably cheaper than living on a runway. Note to self! :)
Thanks for sharing, Steve - this was great! 👍🍻
Steve, this one was definitely worth the wait, can't wait to see you get into that Beaver.
Perfect instruction !
Adapting to his student, no need to follow a syllabus!
Nice job i started on a lake buckaneer its a bit different than dule flotes but beautiful job
Great job, Steve!! This rating is near the very top of my aviation to-do list and I would love to do it in Alaska! Looking forward to seeing your additional videos from this trip!

Best one yet
That's something else?! 👍🏻 Didn't know there's so much extra to water flying, like taxiing, etc. Interesting stuff, well done! 👌🏻
