Yet Annie handled the situation the best among them, she knew they aren't fighting demons. And the worse one was Reiner who was brainwashed to the skin. If you think so - Annie's father probably harsher to her, than family Reiner had. Of course, they all were savage, but some handled the pressure better. Annie told Reiner that if they do this, many of his friends will die - to which Reiner said they're no friends to him. Bertholdt was just neutral, he probably understands Annie but simply has no voice, no will for speaking up. If you think so, Reiner wasn't a good person - never. He is incapable for compassion for his formal enemy who proved they're innocent - and continued his mission, nonetheless. Annie just fell under pression of Reiner. While Reiner followed his mission mindlessly. Reiner evil. Annie not.
She has the same problem with Reiner, but instead of developing DID (dissociative identity disorder) like Reiner did, she endured the trauma cause basically she has more mental strength than Reiner. In the core, she's the type that cold on the outside but warm on the inside.
Even with that Riener is a way better character who went through all the guilt developing so in the end he could live a happy life which actually feels more earned

of coz she is, a normal kind and conflicted person just like everyone of us. she might be trained into a cruel war machine at first, but the moment her father confessed to her, she learnt their are values worth to defend in the world afterall she was as sympathetic as the trio, even trying to leave the war behind, except reiner second personality took over and forced them to carry on. while fighting for her own cause, she didnt hesitate to clear any obstacles in front of her, except the 104th gang which were also her beloved ones. That wasnt a big flaw to me, that just war. like what sasha father said, no wrong doing for the soldiers, they just driven by the defected regime and ideology. and actually u see how she really treasured lives inside the wall in OAD, even she blamed reiner for growing too much bond with the ppl inside the wall, she herself fell into it.
Annie always knew she was piss of shit but she is my favourite character because he she knows what she is and did actually have a heart,those deaths definitely affected her.
The way I see the warriors, is that they all have this metaphorical gun pointed, not only at their own heads, but also their families too. And they are being forced to commit atrocities against their wills. Like what is the alternative. Most of Eldia wouldn't listen and the small amount that would. What were they ever going to do against Marley. Granted, they also have titans, but the odds were very much against them. That is why I have always felt for them, the moment their true mission/ characters were revealed. And it makes a lot more scenes way sadder too :(
I love seeing an analysis of a character, especially one such as Annie. She seems 1 dimensional at first and having almost no emotions until you look deeper. It shows a real appreciation for the series when going through the effort of figuring out why a character acts a certain way and how they change. It's why I can't understand how people can just claim Hange and Armin were dulled down in season 4 for no reason when clearly there were many reasons why if they would just take the time to look and think. Fantastic display of Annie as a character 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Hange was dulled a lot, jailing Eren was a mistake. It wasn't just whoops-I-spill-milk type of mistake - it was evil mistake which was one of the things which led to the situation they all ended up with. If they cooperated better with Eren instead of jailing him, they might have probably come up with a better plan, for example overtake entire Marley government and place Onyankopon to rule in Marley. If Erwin was still alive and didn't left Hange as a leader, he wouldn't let this happen, in fact he did save Eren from jailing when he was alive, even when it was much less obvious who Eren was, an ally or enemy. Hange had an easier situation than Erwin - and she handled it very poorly. Instead of jailing Eren, they fell into inner conflicts again while their entire race was under threat of being wiped out. Therefore, Hange was one of the reasons where Eren had to choose genocide of 80% outside world to save his people. Armin was nothing like Hange - he did nothing wrong. To me, Hange is just a person who heroically fought the demon while being one of those who responsible for this demon to appear. I don't have compassion for Hange, because I don't have compassion for innately stupid people.
Annie i think is similar to Jean. She's compassionate, he just want to be comfortable, and happy with the person she care about. But the sad thing is, she is in the marley side. And because of conditions, she can't do the right thing or her dad will be killed. What's interesting is her thing with Armin and how she always call him "kind person". I think it's because she's jealous that she can't become a kind person due to her circumstances.

She crushes a grasshopper to psychologically prepare herself by imagining that people are ants. Annie says that no one's life had value, not even her own. But everything changes when her father hugs her before leaving and asks her to return alive. Annie experiences emotions of love and affection for the first time. Could she really be just a daughter and not a weapon? She wants to experience it again and again because it feels good. It is a miracle that she managed to retain all the beginnings of a sensitive person in herself, and did not completely turn into a soulless killing machine. Her father's words awaken the little girl in her who wants love and care more than anything. This little girl saves Connie, cries after killing Marco, apologizes to Mina's corpse. Before the 57th expedition, Annie kills this little girl within herself and repeatedly convinces herself of the need to kill all people in order to return to her father, in order to again experience a feeling of love and affection. However, with Armin, these beliefs fall apart as Armin also made it clear to her that she is a person and not a weapon. None of the 104 said that to Annie, not even Eren, although he trained a lot with her. She lets him live, although she clearly intends to kill Jean. Leaving Armin and co. Annie again becomes a deadly weapon whose goal is to return to her father. Now she is a soulless monster who does not hesitate to kill. The yo-yo scene is a way to dehumanize the female titan, to show her reaching the apogee of her dark side. Oh yes. I would like to add that although Armin sees Annie's murders, he still refuses to see her as a monster. This is evidenced by the titan's rather cute face in ep 18. “I would do it again” is again taken out of context. Wow Annie is a monster if she wants to kill again. Although it is similar, Rainer’s mother constantly praises her son, telling him that he can do more, that he is doing great. Annie's father is the opposite - you do everything badly, do it better. The difference is obvious.
Scenes like this are why I can't take aot manga readers seriously. They say Annie never shows any remorse when you have scenes in the text/show that display or imply that she's conflicted about the things she does to the paradisians and has grown to care about them just like Reiner and Bertholt. Her response is just different. And still, manga readers blindly hate her and use her as an excuse to say the ending is bad, regardless of what's actually in the story. I'm not saying it's bad to dislike the ending but Annie is honestly a dumb reason to hate it
SPOILERS Eren wants to save his friends and that includes Annie ("If you want to save Mikasa, Armin and everyone, fulfill your mission"). They will not die from the curse nor will they be eaten by the next Titan shifter ("I want them to live long, happy lives"). And if Annie dies, Armin loses Eren and Annie, so things are better the way they are.

If they hadn’t done Annie dirty and actually kept her around longer, we might’ve gotten a deeper glimpse into what she thought about everything. I'm with you on that. For the most part, she is a really well done character and I can see why she does what she does, even if obviously do not justify it. But that part kinda sucked and looking back, feels oddly out of character even though this was done before her whole character was properly developed.
Y'all saying that's out of character and forgetting how she crushed a grasshopper to pieces, kicked her father's leg until he could never recover and kicked Reiner's face to pulp. She's kind but of course not totally perfect. Almost all is a little crazy due to the environment they grew up in.

Well sure Annie is conflicted, but so is Reiner. One moment he wants Marco dead, next thing you know it he's asking the same guys who he asks for help in this why Marco was being eaten like it wasn't his fault and then proceeds to kill that titan lol.
And that's why I love him so much. He's forced/ tells himself he needs to do these horrible things. But he can never fully commit. Deep down, there is a good side to him that tells him this is wrong. It gets so bad that he even contemplates suicide multiple times, but is always reminded that theirs are people who still rely on him. So instead of giving up, he does his best to make amends and to try and be a better person. He's seriously one of the best written characters that I've seen in fiction.
Annie didn't want to be friends of the people she was sent to kill. It makes sense and it's not hypocritical. But she got attached to them, so much so that she risked her life to save Connie and Jean back in Trost, also spared Armin and Jean's life as the Female Titan and was completely devasted when Reiner forced her to betray Marco. A guit that torments both of them ever since. We can also see her apologizing to the corpses of the fallen cadets in Trost, as well as her pain when she has to fight Eren. She considers Hitch a friend and writes her a sweet letter that aknowledges how important she was during her crystalization. She cries after killing Levi's squad and losing Eren (due to what she had to and also because that would make her take longer to go back to her father and finally experience family love). In the last season, she says she's tired of fighting, she doesn't want to, even with Eren, the one causing the rumbling. But she ends up fighting to save the world. Even when Annie attacks the soldiers, it's more like a threat to the others: don't come close otherwise I'll spin you in the air. She kills the best ones in a cold way because they could truly be a threat to her life, they could kill her. But the regular soldiers... she's not trying to kill as many of them. It's not that hard to grasp, she conditioned herself to coldness, but her heart is not hard to melt
If Annie's father stayed a piece of shit as when she was growing up, she could easily betray Marley for her friends. Her sole goal of reuniting with her father is what drives he killing she had done as a Female Titan. So all in all, Annie is a better human being than Reiner or Bertholdt.
You are absolutely right, people who claim the opposite are too superficial in their judgments. There are a lot of clues to Aruani in the Female Titan arc, but people don't want to notice them.

i think annie was the only one who didnt care about the mission and if her father were not a factor, she could have easily lived as a wall eldian and never go back to marley. Bertholdt is a sheep and reiner also realised that the wall eldians are just regular people, which was shown in s4, yet he still had his dumb marleyan pawn and loyalty mentality that basically got annie captured, them being mentally fucked forever( having to kill their wall eldian comrades and killing large amounts if people), marcel sacrificed (though it was gonna be reiner if not marcel (which might have ended up better actually), and bertholdt eaten. Reiner really caused a lot of the shit that happens eh?

Well sure Annie is conflicted, but so is Reiner. One moment he wants Marco dead, next thing you know it he's asking the same guys who he asks for help in this why Marco was being eaten like it wasn't his fault and then proceeds to kill that titan lol.
And that's why I love him so much. He's forced/ tells himself he needs to do these horrible things. But he can never fully commit. Deep down, there is a good side to him that tells him this is wrong. It gets so bad that he even contemplates suicide multiple times, but is always reminded that theirs are people who still rely on him. So instead of giving up, he does his best to make amends and to try and be a better person.
He's seriously one of the best written characters that I've seen in fiction.

Annie didn't want to be friends of the people she was sent to kill. It makes sense and it's not hypocritical. But she got attached to them, so much so that she risked her life to save Connie and Jean back in Trost, also spared Armin and Jean's life as the Female Titan and was completely devasted when Reiner forced her to betray Marco. A guit that torments both of them ever since. We can also see her apologizing to the corpses of the fallen cadets in Trost, as well as her pain when she has to fight Eren. She considers Hitch a friend and writes her a sweet letter that aknowledges how important she was during her crystalization. She cries after killing Levi's squad and losing Eren (due to what she had to and also because that would make her take longer to go back to her father and finally experience family love). In the last season, she says she's tired of fighting, she doesn't want to, even with Eren, the one causing the rumbling. But she ends up fighting to save the world. Even when Annie attacks the soldiers, it's more like a threat to the others: don't come close otherwise I'll spin you in the air. She kills the best ones in a cold way because they could truly be a threat to her life, they could kill her. But the regular soldiers... she's not trying to kill as many of them. It's not that hard to grasp, she conditioned herself to coldness, but her heart is not hard to melt
If Annie's father stayed a piece of shit as when she was growing up, she could easily betray Marley for her friends. Her sole goal of reuniting with her father is what drives he killing she had done as a Female Titan. So all in all, Annie is a better human being than Reiner or Bertholdt.
Great summary, this is why I love Annie as a character.

i think annie was the only one who didnt care about the mission and if her father were not a factor, she could have easily lived as a wall eldian and never go back to marley. Bertholdt is a sheep and reiner also realised that the wall eldians are just regular people, which was shown in s4, yet he still had his dumb marleyan pawn and loyalty mentality that basically got annie captured, them being mentally fucked forever( having to kill their wall eldian comrades and killing large amounts if people), marcel sacrificed (though it was gonna be reiner if not marcel (which might have ended up better actually), and bertholdt eaten. Reiner really caused a lot of the shit that happens eh?
