I have a 32 curved Asus TUF curved monitor 1440p 165z 1 1800 deg curve radius and I just use iRacing.
I am really missing a lot of my surroundings. Road courses really suffer due to my inability to spot my corners.
I hope this will help me with that
I am buying a web cam and will try Beam.
Hello, witch version to go for if I play on DCS and also IL II on Steam?
@@mrj3217 Curved two ways? ;-)
I'm about to get into sim racing and would like to just use one monitor, even if likely I'll be getting the king of all monitors. If for a small price I get more immersion and good access to the mirrors...seems a no-brainer.
I was never really happy with TrackIR and recently paid megabucks for a Tobii which I tried and returned for a refund as I just could not get it to work satisfactorily.
So I bought a webcam and used it with AITrack and Open Track. It wasn't at all bad but it seemed to drift and I was always having to hit the re-center button.
After watching this video I immediately bought the Beam Eyetracker. Wow! I am seriously impressed! Easy setup and works out of the box.
Best eye/head tracker by far IMO.
The very same experience I am having with the AITrack and Open Track. I get jittery and glitches when I want to look forward and it takes a lot of flight-time-killing moments to do all the twerking and adjustments. Looking forward to trying this out.
Always wanted a head tracker but the prices were stupid expensive. This looks perfect. Thank you.
OpenTrack with a old PS3 move camera works perfect. Has been working for some time. I had the old camera on a shelf for years so not cost.
I bought the standalone version today. Have already tried with MSFS. Can't wait to try it with American Truck Sim!!!
Many thanks for the heads up on Beam. I have tried many systems over the years from DIY to paid products but nothing worked as well and was so simple to calibrate as Beam Eye Tracker, which I purchased via your link 🙂
Don’t forget the security features provide by Tobii. I use it with password management software too.
I'm glad you shared this. I wanted a Tobii, but the sensor mounting would be a problem for me. I have a TrackIR, but I dont like the software, and I dont like having to wear something extra.
Hi. Unable to see 'Eyeware beam' in the Open Track input option... Downloaded the Beam Eye Tracker demo, that's working ok. Do you have to have a game open(i.e. msfs 2020 etc for it to work). I have the latest version of open track and followed the instructions. May be missing something?
I agree, and I own Tobii 5. I have it mounted on my curved monitor, and move it to my 50inch tv, so it works for me. The mounting only at the bottom of the monitor is a limitation, but I like the ease of transfer with the magnetic mounts. If this had been around before I bought my Tobii I would have definitely given it a go.
I just used your link to purchase Beam, when using DCS do I rest all my tobi tracker setting in game or leave them as is and use open Track which i just downloaded ?
Great video, this really helps a lot with these simulations. May I ask, what type of web cam are you using? Thank do much. Great channel Overkill!
I have Track IR, but was not using it for, you know...reasons. I did what you suggested, bought the software, and really like it for my application (sim racing). Thank you for the introduction!
Hi OverKillSimulations, is there any chance that you share your Opentrack config file? I simply do not manage to configure all those axis in a way that I get a good feeling...
One question about Open Track; I have used it before, but it does not like to pause, toggle on/off, or recenter unless you bring it to the front of everything, in some games they do not allow that. Is there a way to toggle everything with Open Track minimized, or do you leave Open Track alone and just use the in-game settings to toggle head tracking and recenter the view? Thank you.
I only use OpenTrack with MSFS - I can toggle it on & off, centre it etc. using key binds set in it with it minimized.
Thank you, I am missing something simple.
@@richavery66
TrackIR wins hands down what come to tracking performance, speed and smoothness. Tried this one and switched back to my trusty old TIR
I’m glad this is out there cause the price of head/eye tracking is absolutely ridiculous, 100 plus to get something that works out the box or you had to rig up some ad hock version of track ir I’m going this route so I don’t have to wear a hat or mount crap on my headphones lol.
I might try it, thanks for sharing.
I bought the windows version, it works with MSFS (Steam version) so there is no need to buy the Steam version of Beam Eye Tracker if you have non-Steam games you want to play. I made a short demo of it in Star Citizen. Thank you.
Man, I had trackIR 5 in the past but got tired of the wires so I stopped using it. I didn't want to purchase Tobi becuase it's too much money for a casual simmer to be spending. This is the solution! Thank for brining this to my attention!
I have the Logitech you have along with BET and Opentrack . If I bind a pause to a yoke button to allow me to manipulate a button or control I can highlight the control but am unable to rotate the knob or press a button with the tracker paused. If I unpause it I then have that ability to manipulate the control. Any idea on what the issue may be or what setting? i have opentrack set to MSFS and natural head movement. Thanks in advance
it works great. Thank you.
I have been using the stand-alone version of this software for a few weeks now - that version doesn't require Steam. I use it with the integrated webcam on my gaming laptop; it's accurate and works very well. (I can't compare it to the Tobii Eye Tracker, as I could never justify the cost of that product.)
I have experience with TrackIR, Tobii, Open Track, and Beam. I think a big thing for me that gives Tobii the edge for me is its ability to work while dark. I found that Beam works really well when its light in your room, but any sort of glare or if the lights are off it really struggles. I'd say if you play games with the lights on go for this, but if you turn those light off often like I do, it'll be a horrible experience.
Thanks Mike. Bought sight unseen.
What I would love is Big Screen Beyond and no need for lighthouses or controllers as I am a flight sim guy. Thanks for the vid much appreciated.
Thanks for this, I purchased for $27 with discount code applied. Webcam will be here in the am,
I have a standalone version of Beam Eye Tracker and it works great.
I'll give it a try. I use AItrack with Opentrack with good results, but it does wig out on occasion. Like the eye track aspect
I installed the non-steam version. Seems to be working...still playing with it...and haven't tried it in a game yet...just getting comfortable with the operation first. We'll see.
Thanks for the video.
I have one of the cheapest cameras from Logitech, the C270.
A 43" 4K monitor is at a distance of 1 meter / 39.3".
It works perfectly, and in my opinion better and more configurable than TrackIr, mainly due to the particularity that with Beam Eye, when you lose your objective, the image remains stable, as you said in the video, with TrackIr everything flashes and we lose immersion .
Furthermore, the option of being able to try it first to see if it is worth buying is also incredible.
I already bought it, as I need Steam for MSFS it's not a problem for me not to be separated.
My best regards.
All good, I got to get one. Slainte 👍
Geez! Good one! Thanks boatloads! Should ask the dev for a promo code for us 😁
There is a free demo on steam according to their website.
Yes there is! And I'm working on a promo code
Great video. I did not realize you were sitting in Comanche before making my own video. Did not mean to copy what you are doing, just love the plane.
Do not ever worry about that my friend! We're all free to fly what we like. Just a cool coincidence and yes it's a great aircraft!
I saw your video as well! Great work!
@@OverkillSimulations Thanks. Just sent someone here for more info on settings.
I have been using Track IR5 for 10 years or so. I cannot fly without it, but I have always hated to have extra cable hanging from my phones, so I decided to give this a try. Honestly I am quite disapointed. Tracking kinda works but it seems to need a heck of smoothing, thus the the lag is horrible. I am used to TIR's instant reaction to head movement. It's so good. If I try to adjust smoothness, it produces instant jitter. No matter if I do it in OpenTrack or in Beam. I switched back to TrackIr, 30 euros less in my pocket.
If you hate the cable, the RJSimtech ultralight is a solid investment.
What is the link for Open Track. Yea. I got a Logitech 45 inch curved screen. Had three 24 inch monitors but a pain in the butt to keep aligned. Thanks Man!
wow i can use my webcam? omg i thought I needed to buy a specific hardware, thanks a lot for the info I'm definitely gonna try it out. also they wrote on the site if you buy directly "steam client not required" even though I have steam installed I never use it
Hey Mike, great vid! One question though, can the camera be mounted above or below the monitor?
Should have watched the video all the way through...Good to know it can be placed anywhere.
You have come a long way from porting over FX planes to MS. I am coming to Vegas in June. Hope to see you there.
thanks Bought mine a couple of days ago. It's really good. Haven't even set it up properly and it works really nice I bought the stream version but might buy this stand alone as well it still be cheaper than track ir thanks again for posting the video ,make it so ....... number one😂
I see this more as the death of trackIR… they have been sleeping at the wheel for way to long
They have stagnated unfortunately. They still sell the same sensor base that was designed to sit on top of big CRT monitors but it is unsuited for sitting atop of a modern flat panel display. Mine always falls off back the back or loses its position if I bump my desk.
that’s nothing compared to the disaster that is the track clip pro bondoogle who falls appart if you sneeze…
My main con against TrkIR is that silly limitation around 60-120 fps, if you want t o have a stutterfree experience. Other than that, my experience with it has been solid for 5 or 6 yers now I believe ...
Hello, witch version to go for if I play on DCS and also IL II on Steam?
BBTW... Unlike most people I use 4 projectors for a full immersion view with 320" wrap-around screen. So Tobi is a pain... in this situation. Most people wouldn't even notice the difference but most simpit people do!!! This beam deal is really cool and easy to use!!!!
I bought a Razer Kiyo Pro for $ 50 and Beam Eye tracker …. Thanks for this video brother ❤❤❤❤
Bought it after watching your video. It works but I desperately need to fine tune it. It's all over the place.
my dumb question. is this only usable with vr? seems if I turn my head I take my eyes off the monitor
Weirdly, I can't open the EyeTracker settings for further adjustments... OpenTrack seems to work fine however... I dunno?
Thank you for sharing this piece of amazing software. The eye tracking in this software is a winner. I would try out the steam demo on my pc and take it from there. As you mentioned, the price of the Tobi eye tracker is prohibitive. The Tobi Eye Track has been in out of my purchase cart for a long time as the price just made it difficult to pull the trigger
if you just use the webcam tracking that works in opentrak, and you arent using the eye tracking anyway, why do you need this?
Do you really need 60fps webcam for this? I tried it with phone cam running at 30fps and it was okay
Does it work in a dark room given that a monitor can illuminate your face somewhat but webcams normally go super high iso with latency in low light
I tested that just tonight and didn't have any issues.. but..I was in the sim during a day flight.. I could see it being an issue if the sim was also dark
Thx Mike,
I bought this Beam eye tracking software this evening after watching this review, and it's much easier to use and smoother than Steams View Tracker, face tracking software. Seems to be working with MSFS2020 out of the box and DCS with a few slight mapping changes.
Note:
Steams View Tracker version of Open Tracker (v1.4) does not work with Beam, so you will need the lastest version. So you will have to have Two versions of OpenTracker installed on you PC, should yiu want to use either Face Tracker or Beam eye Tracker on occasions.
Wow I have gone from "casual TrackIR or Face recognition user using Steams View Tracker running under Open Tracker too a constant " Beam head and eye" tracking user using Open Tracker.
It's a real game changer in both MSFS2020 and DCS AH64D Apache.
I just bought it after watching this video couple days ago. lol. I have had Track IR 5 for a while, and I love it, but what has been bothering me about Track IR the entire time is having to wear the headset. for the tracker. Boy, it can get heavy.
Anyway, back to this Beam Eye Tracker, setup took me a good couple of hours, mainly because I got really dizzy while tunning Opentrack axis. Boy, that was a pain. lol Other than that, I am loving it so far.
With a narrow sim screen, when you move your head a lot, how are you even seeing the screen still?
So the new beam eye tracker runs on steam, not me having to run msfs and dcs world on steam version, right?
How close do you have to be to the screen or rather how far away is the limit that you can be away from the webcam? In other words can I hook this up and put the webcam on my big screen TV mounted on the wall and sit for example 10 ft away and it would do the head tracking I know the Toby you have to be very close to your computer monitor
I haven't tested THAT far but my video today I was probably 4 feet from the camera
I have always wanted an eye tracker but one aspect of a tracker was that looking right or left caused me to look away from my 49" monitor when I look right or left.
Your thoughts?
Mahalo from Kona from an old retired pilot!
The monitor in the video is also a 49 if that helps :)
And if that is an issue with this still you can adjust the curves in open track creating more camera movement for less head movements
Can you have the Steam version of this and a Steam game running at the same time? example I have both ATS and MSFS 2020 in Steam. Also, can I have a webcam video and use Beam Eye Tracker at the same time.
Fantastic news, thanks...!!!!!!!
The thing is... Beam eye tracker uses your pc to process the video from your webcam as headtracking, Tobii (the 5c onwards) processes it inside the tracker and only sends out the trackinbg data to your pc.
I aint no comp wizzard but with most software not being multithreaded you got several cores looking at the ceiling doing nothing that can take on the task… maybe ?
AND
We are not exactly talking aboot nukular weapon calculamation here…
Is there an ability to move your head and pause or freeze the current position with a key bind like you can do with track IR?
Yep! You can see it in action in my most recent video
@@OverkillSimulations sweet! If that’s the case I’ll use your link to pick it up….i look forward to meeting you in Vegas too
Can it be used with X-Camera? X-Cam has an input for TrackIR
Tobii does seem to work for people on top of a monitor, against instructions.
I watched a video a while back with someone explaining this and I remember the pink octopus 🐙 and all you needed was a camera. I used it for 6 months and it worked great and it was free……
As of March 2024 ...the Tobii 5 goes for $448. on Amazon Canada. I run triples screens @ 43 inches each & sit 40 inches away from the center, so I literally have 180 degrees of view. I use View Tracker from Steam ...WHEN I do use tracking which is not often. How does this one compare? I notice it too uses "opentrack" software ...& do you think head tracking is beneficial when using big triples?
I agree with you I tried Tobi Eye Tracker with my MSFS 2020 & XP 12 simpit and it is 1. to Expensive for the little that it does and 2. a PAIN in the A$$ to use. I use a trackir 5 much better deal for the price less hazel, great for switching back and forth.
With my set up it is perfect.
I found Tobii too expensive and TrackIR is very difficult to buy in the UK. You can only easily get cheap Chinese knock-offs. So in the end I went for the infrared DelanClip that works with OpenTrack software. It mostly works very well, but it is annoying having a chunky 3D printed device velcroed to my headphones and I find that when I lean forward too far it stops working because of the angle between the modified webcam mounted on the top of my screen and the device on my head. I'm not sure I really need eye tracking, so I might try out the AITrack option, but I hear these webcam solutions are lower resolution than TrackIR5, so I'm not sure if they're as good?
there's another similar free software AITRACK that works in similar way with OpenTrack, what's the difference ?
This program includes eye and head tracking, whereas AITrack offers only head tracking.
You mention not liking running software ie beam eye tracker and that steam has to run.. then you start open track as well to run the software.. so that’s now 3 pieces of software to get head & eye tracking. If the developer had included open track and beam as one application so it was all the same ui and only one interface might have been worth a purchase.
Thanks for the info on Eye Trackers, but I use a VR headset so have no need for this technology. My VR works very well for me. Nice to know Eye Tracking software exists.
I did try for a little bit Track IR many years ago and was interesting to use. So I am familiar with the technology.
Anyway, Take care.
eye trackers are fun. I own them all. But in the end I use VR always when I can. I do like the price of this since most already have a webcam.
Absolutely the best eye tracker I have used and I have Track IR, Tobii and View tracker. Bought the Stand Alone with 10 % off or £21.69 all in it's BRILLIANT!
Awesome news for a 77" Screen owner who had to put his Tobi 5 back in its box
77"!!! Holy crap!
58" here and finally a solution for us! thanks for the share !
Great video. But does it "zoom in" like Track ir does if you are bending forwards?
Ok yes I tested it. But you cant turn complete around like with Track ir. So personal I prefear track ir.
Yes you can. You have to increase the range of turn in OpenTrack :)
@@OverkillSimulations thank you very much. I will try that 🙂
I am very interested in a stand-alone version of this software, as I don't use STEAM... Hoping they release it soon. Thanks for the video 👍🏼
It's been available for a while. Purchase the software from the developer's website and you'll have a stand-alone version which doesn't require Steam.
@@richavery66 thanks for the heads up… I just downloaded the software. Easy to setup … just needs a little fine tuning and getting used to. 😊👍🏻
Thank You so much if this work as you say, then you have saved me so much money. I run ATS and have been wanting an eye tracker for years, but the cost has held me back and I can't take using the mouse to look Left or Right any more. I will look into this more do you have a web cam that you might suggest. Once Again Thinks John B.
You can use it's steam version with the Microsoft Store MSFS ?
yeah works fine as long as you have it running in the background it works really well!
Does anybody know how this is working with backlight? I have really a lot of problems having backlight with trackIR.
I had it working today with the sun blasting in behind me from a nearby window and was flawless
@@OverkillSimulations Great thank so much.
In 2019 I bought Tobii 4C, it was aweful, never got it working... it eventually stopped working completely and a friend of mine that used one for a few years, it died, atleast my friend had it working but still...
2 years ago I got my first Track IR 5 and I love it to bits, never have problems with it, what I love about it is I know it will unless I step on the thing last for 15 years, would not trust a Tobii 5 to last 5 years tbh.
I downloaded Spudknockers Track IR profile and never looked back, its perfect, feels natural, works in all my games, DCS and MSFS and all the driving games I play like ATS and ETS, BeamNG and more...
IF I had not been able to find a profile and gotten working I would probably have given up tbh, but it worked out so good, best thing I've bought in a long time!
All that said, this looks pretty good and I'm very happy its getting reasonable to get head trackiing finally.
For DCS for example, I cant recommend people to play DCS without headtracking of some sort so I'm glad this is a thing!
The death of tobii happened the moment they released the flawed product. Biggest hardware scam ever. POS
I found a pretty neat setup myself coming in hot at 0 USD.
I say: "a little bit more to the left baby" and then my wife jumps on the right mouse button and drags my FS2020 view right on target. I don't recommend this setup for DCS dogfights though since the system lags often. Sometimes by a few days even.
Lmao!!!! Could make one hell of an RWR though!!
@@OverkillSimulations she would suck as a RIO though. Night cream all over the place when I scream "mask on" in a 9g evassive turn hahaha
I feel like the delay is still too high compared to Track IR
You can adjust the responsiveness as well but yes that could still be the case
There is a completely free alternative to this, it's AITrack. It does the same things minus the eye tracking. And yes, it's not as pretty, but it's free so...
So it does the same thing but not the same thing..
Got it !!!
Meabe its just that for some people its not worth paying 30$ just for a eye tracking and additional latency ?
Got it? @@G_de_Coligny
Does it work if you wear glasses?
Yes!
@@OverkillSimulations Interesting. looks very promising thank you
@@OverkillSimulations sounds good to me I wear glasses
Given that the Neuralnet tracker that comes for free with Opentrack can do head tracking, I wonder if the eye tracking that this can do is worth the purchase price? I doubt it for me - I soon turned eye tracking off when I tried Tobii for a while.
Yup, Yup. Yup. Great video. I had the Tobii for a couple of days but returned it. Because I have an ultra wide curved monitor. It just did not work for me. Now this Beam may be what I am looking for. I have a web cam. And I got 30 bucks.
The monitor I tested with is 49" super ultra wide so you should be good my friend
You don’t seem to need steam for beam take a look at website
This may work better for me.
Tobii and OpenTrack was a game changer for me. I don’t like the Tobii software
Agreed on the tobii software!
could you send me the beam.ini config for opentrack
Well I tried Track Ir. It worked pretty good but I have to recenter alot. Tobii is a completee waste of time. I am glad that I bought it on amazon so I can get my money back. Eye beam does not work either. It doesn't work on x-plane 11 and on MSFS i have to calibrate the heck just to get it to move with my head. VR is the best weay to fly?drive in simulation with great head tracking and imersion.
I don't get the point, I use Opentrack with Freetrack (which is embedded into Opentack) and the webcam of my laptop.
It works flawlessly and nearly better than Tobii (i used to have one before) as it is more configurable than Tobii.
I just launch Opentrack, launch the sim and there it goes!
Why use another paid software?!
(For me, eye tracking is not a must, i used it with Tobii but i find the experience better without eyetracking)
Hello!!!! If I only need head tracking, will using only Open Track work?
Yes, it will. In the Input section, choose 'neuralnet tracker' and it will work without any other software required. (For the other 2 sections, you can use Output: 'freetrack 2.0 enhanced'; Filter: 'Accela'. Other options may also work - I've never tried them but I know the options I've listed worked for me.)
@@richavery66 perfect! I will try it! Thank you!
❤it should be working even with the Tobii5 hardware because Opentrack recognises Tobii eyetracker as well.
Thx 4 the vid. Shark.
What’s it like if you wear glasses
I tried mine today.. I'm near sighted so don't really use them when simming buuuuut it worked great :)
@@OverkillSimulations Thanks for the reply. Carry on Winging it
Should look at ai track overkill it does the same part from eye and free be good see video on thoughts
I shall do that for you my friend
For me better than tobi. Make your own mind up though
tobii has alot of issues. i would steer away from it. theres alot of issues and u become a their troubleshooter
I've never flow MSFS or DCS on a flat screen, nor would I ever consider it, but this looks really awesome. You can't beat the price for sure.
Holy Crap, Jean Luc Picard? LOL
Thank you for noticing..Number One...
The freeware mentions (If I recall correctly) that it's a beam tracker. So, that begs the question, is there an infrared beam, for it to track? (i.e. the open track software, to the extent it's a *beam* tracking* software.) Thank you....
Whoa, did it again! First! ;-)
Lucky day!! Lol
