YOOOOOOOO Technodad grows carnivorous plants!!!! As a *hardcore* plant nerd, this makes me so happy. Additionally, here's a suggestion. Sarracenia, the American pitcher plants, are actually quite cold hardy (and heat hardy depending on the species) and can be grown outside! And, they're crazy hardy to other stuff too. A particularly great cultivar I've grown is called "Yellow jacket," this thing is _indestructible._ I literally have it in a rock outside with some vermiculite and moss, nothing more. It has some S. flava in it which adds drought hardiness, its short enough to not be bothered by windstorms, its taken freak freezes and heatwaves, long summer days and endless winter clouds, and just keeps on growing and doing its thing. It has literally handled weather extremes that have killed _ROSEMARY_ of all things. Sarracenia are also notable among carnivorous plants for actually being able to tolerate a tiny bit of nutrients in the soil so I've never struggled with that. And, true to its name, it is an absolute BEAST at taking out yellow jackets in particular! Would definitely recommend trying these out. There are quite a few cool species out there, I'm partial to the shorter ones like S. rosea, S. psittacina, and various short crosses but there's a vast selection. Additionally, for California, a carnivorous plant that might do fantastic outdoors is Drosophyllum lusitanicum, it comes from a very similar climate in Portugal and Spain, and curiously for a carnivorous plant actually enjoys some dry spells. It also has dew drops for taking out flies, though unfortunately it doesn't do the cool curling around the prey thing (exclusive to sundews, and most noticeable in D. capensis and D. regia, which as an aside would be another great one to try indoors especially if you're going all out with lights and distilled water). It'll still be great for taking out flies though, and should be as low maintenance as it gets for California. I've never had too much of an issue with the water, but then again my area has some truly stunningly good tapwater so I've been able to get away with it no problem for quite a few exotic plants. Light hasn't been too much of an issue either weirdly, at least when I grew a D. capensis. It only ended up kicking the bucket when ironically it got an infestation of aphids and I had to kind of quarantine it away from my other plants. Plants are finicky in that research will only get you so far, and after a certain point you just have to run off of intuition and careful observation; sounds like you've got that bit down though, you're well on your way to a great green thumb! Plants are really quite therapeutic to grow and look after, and I can't recommend enough trying to branch out more and grow more things, especially with California with its great climate and large plant nerd communities. Also, fun fact about your "vegan" plants joke, there's actually a carnivorous plant, Nepenthes ampullaria, which has at least partially evolved to feed instead on falling leaves on the forest floor.
