    This is a great topic. I used to trade solos with a guy, whose playing I admired at the time. When he'd solo, I'd keep the chords really straight, no surprises, so that he'd have a predictable canvas to "paint over" with solos. When it came my turn to solo, this guy would play every freakin' esoteric chord that he could, often changing the major, minor and dominant flavors of the chords, so that I had no canvas, that was predictable. So, he'd throw me curve balls, when it was my turn to solo. Only later, after I'd studied a bit more, did I realize that this guy, was either ignorant about providing a canvas, or just selfish and interested in making it difficult for me to solo. Your video, here, says so much about this subject. If you're comping, support the people who are soloing by making a predictable "canvas" for them to solo over. Thanks for addressing this subject.

    A "Great Artist", like "Jimmy Bruno", you immediately recognize him.
    Just a few notes are enough to identify it with reasonable certainty: from the style, from the performance and interpretation of each proposed piece, from the notes, from the arrangement, from the creativity, the rhythmic virtuosity and all the other elements that characterize it as a whole.
    Ultimately, alone, it is a freewheeling orchestra, which knows no boundaries or embankments.
    It is a "river in flood" that overwhelms everything and everyone, in a rhythmic tide of musical notes that arouse, in the listener, that natural and universal feeling of the soul called "emotion".
    But what a good !!
    It is a Grande, a milestone to be sculpted in the Firmament of the Great Artists of Jazz.
    My compliments, with ten and praise.

    Oh, how I wish I would have just started with that damn major scale instead of wandering in lick-land for 25 years. I learned what I used to think I knew backward, but you are straightening me out Jimmy! Thank you! I have a guitar student of my own. I give him quick lessons during breaks from regular classes at the school I teach at. I showed him the five fingerings and then showed/challenged him to make chords by stacking thirds from the diatonic notes. He said, "Oh my god, that is such a simple concept!" Duh! I wish I would have had the right teacher at the right time 25 years ago. It's never to late to start over!

      By the way, I put on those Jim Hall/Bill Evans albums you mentioned. Great stuff! So restrained. Wow.
      Meanwhile, I listen to B naturals all over Blue Bossa. What is that note anyway? The sharp 9 of the A flat 7? or is the natural 7 of C melodic minor? Does it matter? How do you think of it?

    jimmy everything you state makes perfect sense, separate practicing from playing the music! As joe pass once said "there are major chords, minor and dominant 7s. that's all I want to know." "as far as modes don't ask me"!

    • @JimmyBrunoJazz
      @JimmyBrunoJazz  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No such thing as a mode. What modal refers to in jazz is that it has a few chords that last 4 to 8 bars. That is NOT really modal music

    Not a theory from a guy who play like shit, overly complicated on analyzing notes, make it seems very difficult, always brag on his formal degree on jazz music because he want to sell his book!
    Just practice, listen, play, repeat, it will get you better!

  • @chrish3694

    Hi Jimmy, I was wondering how you approach minor 251's (Dm7b5-G7-Cm7). I have noticed that the b6 of the natural minor scale is rarely played (for example the Ab note over a C minor chord). Even though that note is part of the pitch collection for that chord. Is the b6 note usually avoided in jazz over a tonic minor chord? I love these videos, lot's of cool topics discussed. Thanks.

    • @JimmyBrunoJazz
      @JimmyBrunoJazz  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      IN Jazz there are no avoid notes. For that progression I use an Eb Pitch collection. If I want to address that G7 I'll end the phrase on the note "Nat"
