The rest of the car community needs to know the correct way to do coilovers height adjustment. Seen so many just adjusting the bottom bracket losing the actual bumpstop function. Hats off to phil for shedding some light into this
Absolutely loved this. Proper balance of nerdy stuff and keeping it interesting. I've got an E46 so keen to replace my current set at some point. Added to the Christmas list to treat myself!
I've got a e46 m3 daily. I wish I went for the softer spring rate in the monopro. When your having a blast they are fine. When you come to order from driftworks, ping them a email to ask what they would recommend
In need of a coilover renew.. my hsd's are really old and crusty now so will be looking out for an e46 non M true set, had the cs2's on a few Sylvia's back in the day too
Love an informative video, On the point of suspension not being drift car specific, id be interested to see how fast some drift cars would be with grip alignments
I have a perfectly good working set of dual techs that have been on my e46 330ci for 7 years! I feel i couldn't justify buying a new set, although I'd love to just get these checked over and freshened back up by your self's is there anything you could do?
Quick question ive a e46 m3 with offset top mounts adding caster, i also have some z4m caster lower control arm bushings that i want to fit, is there any noticeable negative affects of to much caster? Love the content btw always learn something from you guys
A lot of generic coil over kits seem to come with spring lengths that are too short for the damper stroke and coil bind can hit in compression before bump stops. I’ve chased this before pulling the springs off to understand the damper and bump stops. There is a ton to consider in setting up correctly. You have a corner weighted car with different ride height at each corner: do you not need to ensure the ARB drop links are free to rotate when the car is static on flat ground and not when at droop to ensure the ARB is not preloaded at static ride height?
Correct, it wasn't mentioned in the video, but all the settings that were transferred from the MonoPro kit had the anti roll bar drop links removed during corner weight and alignment & adjustments made with the wheels on the ground.
@@driftworks Good good. So many little details to suspension which I’m just starting to appreciate. Too hard to cram all detail and caveats into an entertaining and short vid.
What load does the offsets on the mounts take or tested to . Same as oem I guess . Secondly does it cause any bend/ flex in the shock under load just my thoughts no hardship I want to learn. So many questions. Keep up the good work 💙💪
I’m looking to go to true rear coilovers on the compact for track use. Can I get these to fit? As it’s got the rear compact offset rear lower bracket I’m guessing I can?
These will warp or straight rip out your rear strut towers without reinforcements or at least a strut bar (and maybe with them if you’re in a rusty place). I have personally seen this with my own eyes at a local drift track with a different brand but same design, zero hate to what is probably a great product!
I thought the same . That metal there isn’t designed for the whole weight of the car. I don’t think even plates would be enough, the arch would distort
*Hi Phil, just wondered if I could persuade you to part with the old kit you just removed please? Am out of hospital now and managed to secure an E36 318is saloon. A rare beast indeed. Really like the look of the E36 nowadays although I'll always miss my E30 M3. At least I have the Petrolicious video to remind me of better times. Anyway, love the videos as ever and always good to see you and Jay working together. Cheers, Mark*
We have 1 pair of E30 black camber top mounts in stock and could swap them onto the CS2's. When completing the checkout. Just mention in the comments that you would like E30 Black front top mounts, as agreed on TH-cam.
I gotta say , I don’t think the top shock mount of the body would be strong enough to support the whole weight of the car? I mean it’s only usually supporting the damper, the spring perch takes the weight of the car on a significant part of the chassis. I would only fit these if a cage was tied into the top mount otherwise the inner arch will distort to hell.
What's the chances of DW developing a HSD / CS2 kit for the Porsche 996 AWD platform?, good quality, sensibly priced coilover kits are very thin on the ground for these cars.
Hi Phil can you give me any specs on this kit and the hsd kit as you are using them on the e30. I have a Ford Sierra with extremely similar set up to your e30 and was hoping I could get open and closed lengths etc. I want an inverted type kit and want to use this kit as I am using e34 bmw rear hubs and plan on using e36 front hubs, pretty much a carbon copy of your e30, any specs would be greatly appreciated as if I can use the kit I will purchase it. I may need the hsd kit as the top mount on rear of Sierra is a lot different and I’d struggle with having the adjuster there
Easy there Jay, we're all brothers here. And I use both- not by choice, but out of necessity ( measuring units). It's ok to be different. By the way- wasn't the metric system started in France? I think the French might have a few names for you, too. 😂😂😂
FYI there is no benefit to putting the spring on the rear damper, all that will ever do is add friction in the damper (basically reducing small input sensitivity and "plushness" and adding harshness in their place) due to the sideload from the spring and move the spring load path into places that are not designed to take the extra spring loads. Seperating springs from dampers is only ever a good thing from a damper performance perspective. You are now expecting the rear damper lower bolt (single shear IIRC) to deal with the spring loads on top of the damping and bump stop loads which would be my own major concern, primarily from a reliability perspective but also installation stiffness wise (i.e. the bolt will act even more like a spring that is undamped than it usually does = not great). Noting that E36's are also pretty well known for cracking strut tops does suggest this is a very retrograde step also... Secondly, it would be good to see dyno plots from both the HSD's and these dampers as you can pretty much guarantee they are both digressive in bump (maybe not in rebound) just as pretty much every OEM damper fitted as standard on pretty much all cars made in the last 20 years or so are. Its a good thing sure, but its really nothing special. I do love your video's as you do explain that you are not experts who love to muck around with cars, but just occasionally you do trot out some info that is really not great and this is one of those cases where the "upgrade" will only ever be retrograde in reality. P.S. I also once bought HSD Monopro's from you for my e46 wagon and they were OK. You really do have to tighten the locknuts on the ARB droplink attachment though or you lose tyres pretty quickly in the middle of corners...

Fantastic from design to full explanation of product to set up fitting adjustment best on the web fellas 👍🏻😉🇬🇧
Mad skill, Phil
Thank you for those details of how to adjust rear Monopro on E36 on 17s👏👏👏
Please do a kit for the f30 330d
What grease do you guys recommend to pre grease/protect the threads etc??
I notice the hsds had copper grease
We use all sorts. Copper slip is fine. silicon grease. I think the best was a protective bike chain lube.
Will you sell the offset top mounts ?
Looking forward to a 46m kit
Missed catching up with you guys at Goodwood, car looked great, was a great weekend…. 👍
Will you be making an F80 Version? These are sick. The tech that went into these really shows you guys know your stuff!
It one that I'm working on as I've already spent months developing the improvments in the MonoPro kit.
Sweet track weapon

Do you guys do some for mk6 Jetta GLI ?
We are going to start some product development on HSD MonoPro for VAG stuff later this year.

So what you're sayings is 'perfect for mounting the curb in your 323 with a welded diff', right?

Same as stock, and all forces are still opposing so no flex.

Yeah they work on the compact 👍🏻

It can happen, but this car was extensively tracked for many years on true rear coilovers before we owned it.
I just ordered CS2-BM40FC for my 1999 Z3 M roadster any good I couldn’t find any reviews
A true coilover in the rear wouldnt mean more stress on the turret than intended from manufacturer? Just asking, they look stunning
It would, reinforcement plates would be needed
I thought the same . That metal there isn’t designed for the whole weight of the car. I don’t think even plates would be enough, the arch would distort

H, it's in the shop here www.driftworks.com/hsd-monopro-coilovers-bmw-3-series-e36-all-models-92-99-track-pack-grade-b-used.html
I've got a Z4M e85 as they are e36 front e46 rear could we build a kit of these to fit?
Would the front be able to come with e30 top mounts or this kit is not fitting a e30 at all (with a 5 bolt hub from e36)

It's run true rear coilovers as a dedicated track car for years before we bought it. We will be doing the reinforcement though.
A suggestion, don’t use copper slip on aluminum, the copper is reactive and can cause galling. Lithium, Nickel or Aluminum grease is best 👍
Love a good chocolate digressive
Do you believe that non-detented damper adjustment, a la Koni, is just antiquated at this point?
I don't think there's any neeed to not have a detent. It's pretty easy to include in an adjuster.
@@driftworks I agree, was surprised that koni's didn't have any.
Do this set have tüv approval for road use in eu? And will they fit a e36 compact 323ti?
Customers have got thier cars through TUV with an information sheet we can provide showing spring rates and the application.
What's the chances of DW developing a HSD / CS2 kit for the Porsche 996 AWD platform?, good quality, sensibly priced coilover kits are very thin on the ground for these cars.
Unfortunately not likely. The work I have to put into the development needs to sell way more kits than we'd sell in 10 years to 996 owners.
Are you planning on releasing them for 350z at some point?
It might be one I look into later this year 👍
Will a version be available for the E92?
We may look into it if there's demand 👍
Lovely piece of kit although “reinforcement plates WILL be required” , these bad boys will soon push through a 25 year old strut mount.
The car has had true rear coilovers fitted for years and many trackdays. I will be doing it at some though.
Are the reinforcement plates a weld in item?
@@robertwilkinson7566yeah they are usually
@@robertwilkinson7566yeah it’s a good ideal to weld in a kit that will also turn into some sort of strut brace
What are the wheel specs?
So whens phil getting an e36?
I have an AE86 to try and keep up with this.
lovin this kit, thanks for the video
I use metric when aligning and doing general measurement on my cars, I’m in America.
Not a bot 🤖😂 ❤
The E36 has to be the quietest idling DW vehicle of 2024

Can i get your old HSD ?
They will be available in the clearance section of the website soon.
At about 6:36 in " we do do". 😂😂😂
where are these made?
Made for us by HSD in South Korea.
First to view 💪🏻
Wanna sell me those rear bottom brackets, so I don’t have to wait 2 months for a pair 🤷🏻♂️🧐😂
