Investing in indoor grow lights, and equipment is necessary in certain climates if you want to grow your own food all year round. It's an expense I'm sure will pay back in savings later down the line.

I have seen some blanche to use in salads, others use them in soups, stir fries etc. That's why I'll be growing sweet potatoes indoors- for the greens.
I did not have much success with my sweet potatoes. I first put them in a large pot in the garden and move them in my greenhouse in September, they are about the same size as yours . I am now thinking of putting them in the garage under my grow lights. It needs 1 to 2 more months of growth. We had a lot of cloudy days since the beginning of August, that didn't help. You are an inspiration. You are as passionate at gardening as I am.

I'm actually quite surprised that you can't grow them in BC in in Eastern Ontario and this was our second year of growing them outside in black 10 gallon pots on the south side of our garden. Not a huge production but we got a good 10-15 smaller sweet potatoes from 1 slip.
Have you calculated how much on the energy bills it took through the fall months and for what yield ? I’ve just grown slips out of curiosity and the state of the economy here in the UK but now I’m stumped because it’s the wrong time of year. Energy bills here have gone up 50% last quarter and another 80% now. It’s going to be historically bad this winter. These growing tents and heat pads will cost more than the store purchased potato’s as long as we have suppliers.
I've never tried growing sweet potatoes. I have purchased sweet potatoes from the store. This time of the year, they are about $1.29 to $1.49/pound depending on the type. I've never had a sweet potato sprout; but, have had them go bad. Still, I love to eat them and would try growing them if I had the space.

Cool. You can grow them in some parts of Canada, I’m in Toronto Ontario and grew a outdoor big crop 2022. They also grow huge amounts in fields in southern ON. However, most of the rest of the country you’d need plastic, a greenhouse, cheers🎉

It all depends on how hot our summer is as well as the length of summer. I just cut up the small ones and roast them. I have a greenhouse I start the slips in too so can extend the season
Yup, that's the way to do it. Same with all the warm weather stuff.... Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, eggplants, watermelons, etc etc... Hardly any of that stuff gets direct seeded.. The summer just isn't long enough. Cheers!
Charles Dowding grew his outside in zone 8b which is approximately the same as ours here in Sw BC and they seemed ok it was his last video. But perhaps it has also a lot to do with the slips. Good video though thank you as always stay safe and stay gardening 🇨🇦🥬🌶☮️🥕🍆✌️

Hi Amber, I have a 400sq ft greenhouse.. It's all about wanting to dedicate the space though. A low tunnel could definitely give that extra boost if temperatures though, you're right!! I'm in Victoria, BC.... So zone 9

Those vines will fill your little tent in no time. Not sure how pruning the vines would change tuber production, might even help. I'm already rooting some vines from my summer harvest to grow this winter, and expect to have vines to root and plant out in the spring. Also be very vigilant for aphids . They love sweet potato vines and seem to be able to appear out of nowhere. Leaves and flowers are very tasty for soups, salads, or burgers.

Hello, I have purchased light bulbs that have 5000K and 4000 lumins. What I'm wondering is how far apart in a row can I place them for my seedlings/plants can get proper coverage. Appreciate any help you can give, thanks.
So Im new to growing sweet potatoes. I picked up a couple seeds from the Home Depot to give it a try. The instructions said to cut them in half and immerse each piece halfway in water to start the slips. I see that it has a top and bottom. So is this a failure? For the bottom end anyway? Thanks
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I had started the slips early inside, yes, but they weren't much bigger than maybe 6 inches long? I grew them in a 2x3 raised bed, vining up some concrete mesh. Last year I grew them in recycling bins up the concrete mesh but planted late. They still grew but were pretty small. If I can find the time, I'm going to build a small enclosure around the 4 bins and mesh with some vapour barrier. They bins are sitting on some pallets atm, so the plan is to pack some straw in and around the bases and mulch the top of the bins... might get me a few extra weeks of growth. Havent had a ton of time to put into the garden or the experiments as I started it when my daughter was a few months old and she's 3.5 now.. thought I could do more than I seem to have time and energy for this past year, heh.

I was going to grow some just for the beautiful leaves, I love vines of all kinds. My pots won't be 10 gallons though, so if I do get any potatoes they'll just be wee ones and that's o.k. Thanks again for some great ideas Jeff. Can't wait to see what happens!
Years ago my ex mother-in-law grew them as decorative houseplants. I just thought of it tonight, so thought I'd google to learn how to do it. The really are pretty. 🌿🌿
No days to harvest yet because I haven't harvested them yet. Still growing....vines are huge, almost too big for indoors. Using 300W for 16 hours, so 4800W per day. Costing 48 cents a day to run this, which is $14 a month! Likely a 6 month harvest (which is normal for sweet potatoes) so we're looking at needing over $80 of sweet potatoes to just break even on electricity. Organic sweet potatoes and yams are roughly $5/lb, so if I can get to 20lbs, I'll be happy. 10lbs per pot. Fingers crossed. I think if this were done in a greenhouse, augmented with night time heat and possibly supplemental light, its a viable crop.

@@ninja5672 definitely.... If you could use solar and latent heat as much as possible, you could keep costs down. Fortunately my LED light is also doubling as my heat source, so I'm not adding cost there.

I know man....same. Sort of. I think we have a long enough season if I can get the slips big enough...but there's no way the soil is going to stay above 70F for long enough to get any sort of crop...we need like another 6 weeks of summer for that....minimum! :(

Heavy mix your soil with flour and hay and green leafs and sticks , and test in a Pot and tell me your results on the experiment... moist only the mulch and not the soil ... i'm sure you will increase the soil temperature this way...

Yeah, if you time it right, it's definitely a doable crop up here!
Place round tomato cages "upside down" (so the smallest side is UP) over the plants, in the pot...easy trellis for them.

I'm doing mine next to my weed plants. Mine have been going for at least 85 days. Wish you would of said how long before harvest
Harvest time changes based on conditions (light, temperature, moisture, soil). Basically, harvest after flowering, when the foliage begins to fail.

Went super well. I didn't sell the slips directly, but I made larger starter plants for more $$. Sold out in 2 days.

Yes, only one end of the Sweet Potato sends out sprouts.

@@Gallasl666 one sweet potato head could produce a dozen slips (new plants)..... You need to sprout one head for near unlimited plants.

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I had started the slips early inside, yes, but they weren't much bigger than maybe 6 inches long? I grew them in a 2x3 raised bed, vining up some concrete mesh. Last year I grew them in recycling bins up the concrete mesh but planted late. They still grew but were pretty small. If I can find the time, I'm going to build a small enclosure around the 4 bins and mesh with some vapour barrier. They bins are sitting on some pallets atm, so the plan is to pack some straw in and around the bases and mulch the top of the bins... might get me a few extra weeks of growth. Havent had a ton of time to put into the garden or the experiments as I started it when my daughter was a few months old and she's 3.5 now.. thought I could do more than I seem to have time and energy for this past year, heh.
Thanks for the information! Fun to learn but to be honest its all to much and i just don't have the money or the room for indoor planting of this kind.
Agreed Johanna... That's mostly my reason for doing it. Is it worthwhile? Can the money be recouped? You never know until you try.
I was going to grow some just for the beautiful leaves, I love vines of all kinds. My pots won't be 10 gallons though, so if I do get any potatoes they'll just be wee ones and that's o.k. Thanks again for some great ideas Jeff. Can't wait to see what happens!

Years ago my ex mother-in-law grew them as decorative houseplants. I just thought of it tonight, so thought I'd google to learn how to do it. The really are pretty. 🌿🌿

Watt Hours used per day, and total days to harvest, vs weight in sweet potatoes?
No days to harvest yet because I haven't harvested them yet. Still growing....vines are huge, almost too big for indoors. Using 300W for 16 hours, so 4800W per day. Costing 48 cents a day to run this, which is $14 a month! Likely a 6 month harvest (which is normal for sweet potatoes) so we're looking at needing over $80 of sweet potatoes to just break even on electricity. Organic sweet potatoes and yams are roughly $5/lb, so if I can get to 20lbs, I'll be happy. 10lbs per pot. Fingers crossed. I think if this were done in a greenhouse, augmented with night time heat and possibly supplemental light, its a viable crop.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms nice! Thank you! I assumed you had harvested already. Perhaps if there were a cheaper way to keep them warm, like keeping in the warmest part of the house.
@@ninja5672 definitely.... If you could use solar and latent heat as much as possible, you could keep costs down. Fortunately my LED light is also doubling as my heat source, so I'm not adding cost there.

If you don't trellis the vines they will put down more roots as they spread across the ground and grow more sweet potatoes everywhere they root.
When do we get to see your onion update?! I hate to say it but I'm starting to think we won't see one? I really hope I'm wrong! Growing sweet potatoes your way looked great till I looked up the grow tent you're using. But yikes $580 is a lot of store bought sweet potatoes lol!
The grow tent I am using is the 4x2x70" one....its $127 US ($168 CDN)

That's where my number came from...not from the tent. Through your link the grow light is U.S. $399.99 ... $527.54 Canadian....unless I'm looking at the wrong one? That still buys a lot of sweet potatoes! PS...how about those onions lol?!

I know man....same. Sort of. I think we have a long enough season if I can get the slips big enough...but there's no way the soil is going to stay above 70F for long enough to get any sort of crop...we need like another 6 weeks of summer for that....minimum! :(
Thanks buddy. I think the real interesting part will be how much we can produce given the input costs of heat and light...That cost vs the $$/lb of organic sweet potatoes is what I'm most excited about!

Have you tried placing a plastic low tunnel over an outdoor raised garden bed to trap the sun's heat and raise the soil temperature?
Is there any way to do this without all the contraptions?

Very cool! How are you liking the sp3000s?! I’ve been frustrated looking into them as I don’t grow the crops that most people produce with them, so it’s hard to see how well they’d perform for my needs. I’d LOVE to know your thoughts coming from a, er, traditional home gardening viewpoint.
Would you, some time show how to grow low light, low warmth edible crops, low GDD`s (Growing Degrees Days) edible plants, No lights... I think the sun is going in that direction and I have a will to know how to do this in the Natural way. Thanks....

Definitely. Its all just heat, light, water, and nutrients. If you can provide that without a grow house, you're going to be just fine! :-)
I started sweet potatoes. They grew an abundance of leaves which made for great salads. But, they became utterly infested with white flies. So I had to pull them
White Flies.....! Ugghh..worse than aphids sometimes! Was that growing them indoors Dan?

100% correctomundo. That's the issue I have trying to grow these guys outside in the summer. Fingers crossed I can keep the temps up over winter!! :-)

Heavy mix your soil with flour and hay and green leafs and sticks , and test in a Pot and tell me your results on the experiment...
moist only the mulch and not the soil ... i'm sure you will increase the soil temperature this way...

Nope. We actually don't normally have true yams available to us to purchase. Sweet Potatoes come in many colors. Many.
Our orange ones are a lot sweeter then the yellow ones
White sweet potatoes in the stores are about 2.99-3.99 a pound, so a 3 pound sweet potato can be $12.00 so growing your own can save a lot of cash
