I live in Iowa, we just had our first mild frost. My patch is SO completely out of control. I did not thin and prune this past spring. I have way too many shoots and so many that are 4-5 ft tall, still have foliage on so I can not even tell what is what inside the jungle. Can I do any just shortening (taking off a ft or 2) or just leave it all alone until Spring. You are right that the urge to prune is out of control as we still have nice weather so I want to be outside but looking at that hideous mess makes me crazy. I think I started with 4 plants 3 or so year ago.
My father has 4 rows of raspberries, two on one edge and 2 in middle. There was a path between the two rows do you could easilynoick all the berries. The rows ran the le gth of the garden, about 30 feet. Mom made raspberry jam and raspberry sauce. I still make the sauce today. I love it. So easy to make. Mother canned her, I just eat mine as I don't have that many berries.
My baby raspberry patch is my favorite part of my garden. Since I'm in Sooke and same zone as you, I have just simply used all of your raspberry videos to teach me what I need to know. Seriously loving the vids and knowledge. Can't wait for your Spring pruning and amendment video!!
I have to get out and clean up my berry patch. We got a few inches of snow this week, so I better hurry up! I'm trying the back to Eden system with my berries and trees, relying mostly on deep wood chips. We'll see how it goes!
I personally don't do much in the winter other than prune them and maybe mulch. But in early to mid spring I fertilize them when they have started to shoot out a ton of leaves and shoots with a mixture I make that contains about a cup of Alfalfa meal or powder, a cup of ground rabbit manure, half a cup or a bit less of epsom salt, and a quarter of a cup rock dust.
I've always had horrible luck with my Raspberries...now I know why! I was doing everything wrong. I followed this advise to a T last year & my crop rebounded nicely....this year, the canes are much stronger & much healthier than last year. Just finished "putting them to bed" yesterday following this method again...looking forward to 3" berries in June!! Other than grass clippings in the spring what other spring amendments are needed? Thanks again!
Just watched your pepper overwintering video. I watched a bunch before and my peppers are already inside doing great but what can I say, I love pepper videos!!!😂🌶 I decided to scroll through the rest of your videos and although I cannot watch them all right now, I am subscribing to you so I can in the near future!!!👍🌶😊
Should I shorten my stalks? They all bend over. They never grew straight upward. Now it is getting colder and one is totally brown leaves and all. The rest are still healthy and green. That is what made me look this up. It is the first time growing raspberries, and blackberries.
First year raspberry bush here.. it’s growing like crazy and super green and lush. None are dead looking yet but we only had one branch that produced berries so far. How would you prune? We do get cold winters and It’s already fall here
A lot of bought nutrition there... Don’t you do household composting? Maybe that’s more common in Sweden, where I live. I have also heard that raspberrys like some wood ash that can drain down with the melting snow in spring. What do you think about that?
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms awesome! I'm going to use my homemade compost like you and then spread chopped brown leaves over top. Can't afford the alfalfa, etc right now.
@@laurabee44 That would work perfect Laura. In the spring, mulch with some green grass clippings and you'll likely have a maintenance-free patch for 2021!!! :-)
Enjoyed the video And raspberries do you prepare blackberries and blueberries the same way please I have all three this is my first year with them Sandra from UK
Is it a good idea to grow alfalfa or red clover cover crop seeds in a plot with raspberries? Then chop and drop them in early fall or next spring? My first average frost is September 11-20.
I have wild rasberry in one corner of my land and it's not my favorite fruit but I noticed I have less and less fruits so this fall I cut it all and will see if I have something next summer. Right now it's too late to do something else I already have snow on my land
@@IsabelleIsabelle01 I've growing raspberries for 20 years now. My brother did the same to his patch a few years ago up in Minnesota and his came back but took a year to start producing.
Thanks for the info! If I wanted to take cuttings from my existing patch to transplant to a new area, when should I do that? And should I cut from primacane or floricanes?
You can dig up spare Raspberry canes (and split them) or ground suckers that run away from main plant. Until you grow them for one growing season, you won't know well or heavy they will fruit. (**Wild ones, or maybe old ones in a New Home setting.) Best to ask a friend for some good ones... 💪 Best to do this in the end of Autumn* (Fall.) Cut all the stems to about 6 Inches High and water then mulch well. If you want Summer Fruit trim all stems to about 8 Inches, just above those lower few sprouting buds. If you want Autumn Fruit, cut back right to the ground after fruiting* (if transplanted in Spring, you will get summer fruit initially, until you get into an Autumn Pruning Regime sorted each year.) Some garden nursery centres have Raspberries that can be either a Summer or Autumn variety ! Check labels.... We grow most or all of UK's raspberries, right here in Scotland ! 👍
Hi I am curious. I had a client with a wonderful large and ancient raspberry patch. This year they were hit with rust in the spring really bad. Do you recommend cutting them all to the base, removing any fallen raspberry leaves (to eliminate rust spores)? Usually I prune like you advised in this video but I've never seen such a bad case of rust on them before. Thanks, I love your videos!
Clean up all the sporing debris. Prune and clear out a stem here and there. Rust is because of to much moisture and warmth (at the wrong time.) By cleaning out and cutting back stems*, will allow light and air to circulate freely amongst the raspberry canes. * Clean out a few stems here and there, if you make a mistake, you will still get some fruit. If you cut it all back, it's game over, and fruit will be amazing in the second year !?! 😉
You will get fruit in the second year. Last year's green stems become next year woody (fruiting) stems ! If you do half this year, half next year (any errors will mean you still will get some fruit ! 👍) * Half, say every other stem in the row, or every other crown stem in the ground.

Most people cut and plant them at the end of summer, which gives them enough time to produce fruit the following season. :-)

Yes, if you can manage that, it'd be great for the soil!

Is banana tea or compost made with banana peels good to mix in the soil of raspberry cane?

Straw, leaves, or sometimes even green grass when I want to add a little nutrients back in.
