I read on another site that you can eat the greens if you don't want to make more potato slips. Funny recipe though: tomatoes, onions and slips ??? Seeking more information.
Its my first time growing sweet potatoes and know this will sound stupid to most people, but is that just a regular sweet potato you can pick up in the produce dept?
Not a stupid question at all! Short answer is yes, try to grab organic if you can. The best bet is to go to a whole foods, sprouts, local organic place or farmers market. Most of those places will have better quality.
I planted a few sweet potatoes, and tons of slips on vines..now thst its sept..I'm goingvto put in buckets and sprout the slips..try to grow inside once it gets too cold.. how long before potatos??
Thanks! Yeah, they do good, your prop should vary depending on variations in species, rain and what not. It's better to use a 25gal pot, but 5gal pots are more relatable to people.
You want as long as possible, a lot of the times if you can get to 120 days plus that's the best. I ended up pulling them around 85 to 90 days last year, and the results were basically a lot of roots but no potatoes. Maybe you could say the roots were starting to get fatter, but I definitely did not get enough time.
I'm getting ready to start sweet potatoes and regular potatoes in 5 gal buckets, grow bags, and bins. I've never had a garden before this year.. Tried to grow veggies in containers, here in 100+ daily heat in Ca. What a disaster! Hoping fall and winter will do better. I'm not giving up. :) PS: I also love that you keep right to the point and don't drag out the video with unnecessary info. You go straight for the gold! I subscribed today! Thank you. 🪴
Thanks! I am glad I earned your subscription! I used to live in Santee, so can relate a bit. You could try using shade cloth to reduce the heat in the summer. The good news is there is a good chance that you could grow right through the winter!
it was too hot when you tried gardening. sheer cloth over the containers would give garden shade but keep the heat. sheer fabric will provide some light but keep the hottest heat in check.

It should work in Florida! The only thing idk about is if it will work all year round. If you don't have anything dip past freezing, you may be able to grow all year!

You're so welcome Jaqueline! I'm glad you're out there gardening! Also, if there is a frost that hits, they'll die that night. You may be able to prolong them if you can bring them in and set by the window. I'm going to start taking the vines and making slips (clip some, put them in water, wait), and start a whole new set of buckets that I'll bring inside. This way i'll have some food that finishes about December just in time for Christmas!
@@hillbilly-homestead WOW! Didn't have a clue about making some slips from my vines....Going to do all your suggestions! I again really appreciate all your help. I from now on will always try to grow what I eat 🥗🌿🌱🍃
Yep! Every node of every vine has the ability to become it's own slip. That's why I spend the extra $$ in this video to buy the fancy Japanese sweet potatoes! I knew I was going to be able to clone them and make more and more from them.
LOA at work! I’ve been affirming for maybe a week now that I’m a multimillionaire and as I go about my day caring for chickens, foraging food & gardening, I am “living my best multimillionaire life!” This morning you appear on my cell. Love it! Congrats to you. Btw, I’ve been growing potatoes in large barrels this way for several years with great satisfaction- easy peasy!
Hey! Fantastic question. Sweet potatoes are definitely a tropical plant so they tolerate absolutely 0 cold weather that would produce a freeze. If you can control your temperatures above freezing inside of a greenhouse then it'd be definitely possible. I actually was doing exactly what you were thinking in the fall, I brought my sweet potatoes inside but unfortunately I left a window open for the greenhouse and cold air got to it and killed off the sweet potatoes immediately. So I can't give you direct experience answer but I know there are tons of people who successfully grow all the time so long as they can control the temperature inside. I believe it's something like 120 to 150 sunlight days of warmth that will go from slip to actual harvesting. The follow-up video to this 1 you see I only gave mine like 90 days so I had extensive root systems but did not really have the time for new sweet potatoes to grow. Seems like you can control your temperature, time in the soil is better maximized.
Great idea! Unfortunately for me here all the ones we get from Asian stores locally have never sprouted any in the last 3 years i've tried. They must be irradiating them or something so the potato itself dies off.
I planted several large whole sweet potatoes in a barrel a couple years ago.. Now it is a huge bush of vines and leaves Is it too late too snip off slips to propagate?
You're welcome! I hope I can earn your subscription and bring you more content! As for the pool, my father grew up very poor in the 1930's. When he had a family of his own he built a house with a pool so us kids would enjoy what he didn't get too. That has since passed to me to take care of.
thanks for sharing this great video............I've been doing this for the past year and am generating tons of vines I've been harvesting to add to dishes all the time. They seem to overwinter fine down here in Zone 8b. Sweet potatoes down here can serve as a survival crop.
I'm zone 6. bought some sweet potatoes at safeway. I wanted them on hand. they had to be fairly old as they produced vines very quick. but it's gonna be cold here in a few weeks so I'll probably need a bucket grow.
C Maggie, you'll have to let me know how they turn out! Hopefully you can grow them inside by the window or something! Today a friend and I were just discussing using 9 buckets, Planting 3 at a time, after some growth, going to try to grow 3 more after 1 month, then another 3 after than. 1 Month later, the first 3 buckets should have yeilded 15-30 sweet potatos to last a month. Then replant. Not sure if it'll work, but then we'd always have one set of 3 buckets coming into harvest.
Loved this, especially the concise and professional way you presented the topic. I got here by way of Haxman's growing towers video, and am curious if it's possible to grow these in something similar. I live in a city in a desert, so growing space is at a premium.
I am not sure about that specific product as I have no direct experience with it. HOWEVER, I know usually the growing tower kind of systems usually are tough for root vegetables to grow. I know some soil based towers you can get carrots and radishes, but aquaponics/aeroponics style systems often produces really small roots. (which is the parts we want to eat). I know there are tons of patio gardeners using these container pots with success. I helped my friend setup his garden as he has limited space. amzn.to/3qTKfNP. For watering you can try these globes. Since you're in a desert environment, they get water directly to the roots where it's needed, w/o drying out. Its also easy to see if/when you need to rewater. amzn.to/3LslbqL
Thanks Albert! I actually weare the hat because it's the most efficient hat for the outdoors! Side effect is it looks cool. Here's the hat I have: amzn.to/3wp857C
You will get 5-10 depending on weather conditions. If you get 5 they'll be larger usually. My other channel is Hillbilly Millionaire. It's all about finance and business!
how many potatoes do you typically get from one sprout, which was planted in the 5 gal. bucket? How long does it take until you can harvest the potatoes?
Let me know how it turns out! Is the weather all weird there this year too? We just had a frost come through and wipe out anything that was planted already.
If you really want to be cheap, go to a Whole Food Organic store somewhere. My local store will give me seed potatoes. Once they start to develop eyes, they don't sell them, they're garbage. I tried to buy them from the store as "seed" potatoes, but they wouldn't let me do that. They had rather encourage an organic grower.
Yes you can! you can take the soil, shake it lose and reuse it, and add some more in for what was lost in the growing process. Depending on how large and conditions, you should get 5-10 potatoes per bucket. It's one of the reasons I only plant 1 slip in there, instead of multiple plants that compete for the space. If you stagger the 5gal buckets by 1 month, you can always have a bucket or two almost ready.
I definitely use leaves to mulch lots of things. A lot of the time people will just use whatever they have around. I'm sure someone a lot more science will be able to tell you directly, but it's likely better to have a mulch of leaves as a ground cover then leave it bear even if your leaves aren't the most ideal mulch.
Howdy! I do not sell slips, and when they're outside I only water if I know there's several weeks of drought conditions. Otherwise I try to just let nature takes its course. It's nice because when it rains too much they won't get overwatered because the water can drain out the bottom.
The sweet potatoes are great! Being that you're in London and have access to tons of foreign markets, you make be able to find TONS of potatoes that aren't available here. You could grow like 20 different kinds and see what works/tastes best for your climate! FYI, sweet potatoes are tropical only plants, so the first frost WILL kill them. Keep an eye if you're planning on growing through winter.
It's made from think slivers of bamboo. I did not make this one myself, I just bought it from amazon. The rice hats are for sure the most effecient garden/outdoor hats to use. amzn.to/3LOMgos
can i leave the heavy buckets with soil behind as i go collect the hay or does this effect the sweet potato plant negatively/ do sweet potato plant need joy rides to produce?
@@hillbilly-homestead XD mate better set them dogs up with a sleigh and get them dragging those sweet potatoes around for the joy rides of their lives XD omg you will never believe what the comfrey tell me off camera XD
@@hillbilly-homestead Really?! Wow, well then your property is pretty well organized and you are an efficient person. 👍 I'm a first time watcher, do you share which country you do permaculture in? I thought I saw an American flag.
I plan on a Philippines retirement. I have bananas and mangos and coconut growing in my lease now. I wanted to grow every sort of sweet potato I can find with my bananas. I figure a bamboo trellis between bananas would make for better use of the land. I understand that it is 120 to 140 days to harvest for these and peanuts. I’m concerned with food security also. I can grow the yams better then I can rice and corn
Absolutely! Sweet potatoes are also largely typhoon resistant. I know its some of the only crops that can be grown on islands consistently. You may be southern enough that you can grow all year round. If you don't get a frost, you cant just keep growing and growing and growing. About 1month before you harvest, i'd cut a section and put it water so it can start forming roots.
There is a follow up video where this specific bucket year I got zero. That was mainly becase I planted too late in the season. There are other youtube channels that have had success where they are getting 5-10 smaller sweet potatoes, kinda skinny and long. A 5gal bucket is NOT the ideal way to grow sweet potatoes, if you get get a wider container they'll appreciate it alot more.
I saw this video and it was so informative and interesting. Thank you so much for sharing this information. You are a real educator. I just subscribed. 🧡
You mentioned your garage for winter. Do these plants not need sunlight in the winter? I have a walk out basement and I'm wondering if that is an option. Living in Northeast georgia, is it possible they could survive outside through the winter?
You may be able to use a south facing window if you have one. If folks bring it into a Garage, they may be able to supplement with indoor grow lights as well. These are Tropical only plants, so the first frost with 100% kill them off. As long as you keep brining them in anytime you think it'll dip, I think you'll be in good shape. If you had a small hoophouse or Martha Tent you may be able to keep them in there as well.

I read on another site that you can eat the greens if you don't want to make more potato slips. Funny recipe though: tomatoes, onions and slips ??? Seeking more information.
Yep you sure can! It's one of the few crops that you can eat the greens the entire summer then have the actual harvest you wanted!
Howdy Joan! Great job! They will start to turn brown and die off and turn yellow. Normally its like 90-120 days.
Thank you. Didn't know could grow in bucket. Like your hat and fur babies.
Thanks! Yeah, they do good, your prop should vary depending on variations in species, rain and what not. It's better to use a 25gal pot, but 5gal pots are more relatable to people.
yes regular potatoes can be grown the sane way. be sure you have drain holes in any bucket or you'll have a swamp bucket w rotten potatoes
how long it takes to expect to have sweet potatoes ready to eat from the time you plant them from that root cuttings?
You want as long as possible, a lot of the times if you can get to 120 days plus that's the best. I ended up pulling them around 85 to 90 days last year, and the results were basically a lot of roots but no potatoes. Maybe you could say the roots were starting to get fatter, but I definitely did not get enough time.
Love it love it love your energy you are a cool dude thank you for sharing your knowledge and God bless
Thanks for watching Rebecca!
This dude has a (inside) backyard... or inside pool/backyard..... nice...
Thanks!
Excellent and thank you from New Zealand. I too love what is cheap and grows and grows
It's the best! And a lot can be had for cheap or free!
PS: I also love that you keep right to the point and don't drag out the video with unnecessary info.

Thank you! I will definitely keep both of these ideas in mind for next summer. 🤗
I too grow sweet potatoes in addition to EVERYTHING else!!!! Literally... We're not cheap, just very frugal!!!! 😄

I enjoyed your video, I can't help to notice the beautiful place you have there, just wondered what you do for a living?
Howdy Donna! I was in IT, then went into manufacturing where I learned about "2 Second Lean". I then applied 2 Second Lean to my finances, and retired 15 months later. Got bored and started a company and am now working on retiring the company.
I actually have my other TH-cam Channel, Hillbilly Millionaire, and it's dedicated to helping people life hack their way to financial freedom.
Just curious - I'm almost in zone 10 in Florida and have zero garden sense. Do you know if this method can work down here?
It should work in Florida! The only thing idk about is if it will work all year round. If you don't have anything dip past freezing, you may be able to grow all year!
Had luck with slip growing from potato but cuttings never prospered so I just planted the potatoes.havent been home for few months to see results .ps like lamp shade hat well ventilated shade.
It's a super awesome hat for sure! The most efficient for any work outside. I take the cuttings, and put them back into the water to root again. I haven't had any issues yet unless I don't change the water and they start to rot.
Would sweet potatoes grow in a 2-gallon bucket? Just wondering if that's enough room for them. Great video, by the way. I'm inspired.
I have 5 Huge 🪣 Buckets with Sweet potatoes vines covering my whole Back porch. When exactly do I harvest them. This is my first time growing Sweet Potatoes.
The plant will start to die off. That's when you harvest! It's usually 90-120 days, but depends on your weather and zone.
@@hillbilly-homestead
Thanks for replying!
The vines are still Healthy & thriving. I think I planted them middle of June or so. I'm in Maryland Zone 7b. Can't wait for the vines to start dying off so I can see my Harvest 🍠
Thanks again👍🏾
You're so welcome Jaqueline! I'm glad you're out there gardening! Also, if there is a frost that hits, they'll die that night. You may be able to prolong them if you can bring them in and set by the window. I'm going to start taking the vines and making slips (clip some, put them in water, wait), and start a whole new set of buckets that I'll bring inside. This way i'll have some food that finishes about December just in time for Christmas!

WOW!

Least work as possible.Love it!
Yep! Works out pretty well!
Here in the PNW we have weeks of rain at a time, what are the temperatures do I need to grow sweet potatoes? Can I grow them in a greenhouse?
Just came across this video and was wondering if a trellis is needed to grow sweet potatoes when growing in a 5 gallon bucket?
I will let mine sprawl out because I have the space, but you can trellis them no problem. It may make it more difficult to move if you need to.
Even the matured leaves and the leave stems can be cooked and eaten ... a popular dish among Chinese in Malaysia and Singapore
They are very good to eat! I enjoy them! Like spiniach but not bitter.
I LLLLLUVE the leaves and stems. Tastes better spinach and more versatile
You taught me some things..thank you
You're welcome! Glad I can help out. How do you use them that you make them versatile? I was just talking salads.
Can you tell me the name of the miracle loose soil that you planted the sweet potato in.Thanks
It's just miracle grow compost. The big box stores all have some. You could also use potting soil if you like.
try using organic soil. also available at stores. not that expensive miracle grow has chemicals.
Great tip. Next time i'll see if we can use some that are at a sursery. But I'd really like to start making my own potting soil!
@@hillbilly-homestead DO you have a recipe for making your own potting soil?? I would love it!!

Thanks 👍I'm glad you enjoyed it!
This purple sweet potato is my favorite one , you can buy them at any Asian grocery market for about $2.59 to $2.99 a pound
Not at all! If they are sweet potatoes then NOPE! You're in great shape, you can snip some and try it.
@@hillbilly-homestead thank you I will snip some of these oldies and let you know how they do!👍

thanks for sharing this great video............I've been doing this for the past year and am generating tons of vines I've been harvesting to add to dishes all the time. They seem to overwinter fine down here in Zone 8b. Sweet potatoes down here can serve as a survival crop.
That's awesome! I'm glad to hear 8b they can make it all year.
I'm zone 6. bought some sweet potatoes at safeway.
Your a STAR - knowledgeable and entertaining!
Keep up with your great work, bro!
Thanks! I appreciate it! What else do you want me to try or cover?
Its also easy to see if/when you need to rewater. amzn.to/3LslbqL
omg dude you just made gardening fun for us in nz again your funny and talk through the process with energy thank you very much worth the sub

How many potatoes do you get from the one slip? And can you send me a link to your other channel please?? Thanks in advance
You should get 5-10 per 5gal bucket. Normally 90-120 days. When they're ready the top of the plant will start to die off.
I'm in sw Florida and we aren't having a lot of luck growing anything.. I am now doing sweet potatoes. I'm planting them everywhere..
Let me know how it turns out! Is the weather all weird there this year too? We just had a frost come through and wipe out anything that was planted already.
How do you know if that straw has been treated with an herbicide?
You would need to trust your source or supplier. I know mine wasn't because of the farmer it came from doesn't use them due to cost.
Subscribed. Keep at it. Good video.
Thanks so much! I', glad I can earn your subscription!
Very informative! Well done sir!
Thanks Becca! You rock!
Do you have to plant sweet potato in the Spring?
You do not have to wait. I planted mine in July or August. With the 5gal bucket you should be able to grow all year if you can move them inside.
Howdy David! That's a fantastic idea. I really like that they don't sell it and you can get them for free.
Why do you need to break off the leaves before planting?
I do it to prevent rot or something spreading to the plant from parts that are under the soil. But I'm not entirely sure it's needed.
Great video, how many potatoes will come out of the pot? And can one reuse the soil? Perhaps by adding fertilizer?
Yes you can! you can take the soil, shake it lose and reuse it, and add some more in for what was lost in the growing process. Depending on how large and conditions, you should get 5-10 potatoes per bucket. It's one of the reasons I only plant 1 slip in there, instead of multiple plants that compete for the space. If you stagger the 5gal buckets by 1 month, you can always have a bucket or two almost ready.
I use leaves to mulch baking potatoes, can leaves be used on sweet potatoes too?
I definitely use leaves to mulch lots of things. A lot of the time people will just use whatever they have around. I'm sure someone a lot more science will be able to tell you directly, but it's likely better to have a mulch of leaves as a ground cover then leave it bear even if your leaves aren't the most ideal mulch.
how often to water when these are growing in a field? do you sell slips?
Howdy! I do not sell slips, and when they're outside I only water if I know there's several weeks of drought conditions. Otherwise I try to just let nature takes its course. It's nice because when it rains too much they won't get overwatered because the water can drain out the bottom.
"I'm going to do everything I can so I do the least work possible" instantly my new favorite channel.
Why do more work when less work is achievable? I'd for sure be down to do more work now if it means little to no work in the future!

How do you make that hat? From rice stalks or bamboo?
It's made from think slivers of bamboo. I did not make this one myself, I just bought it from amazon. The rice hats are for sure the most effecient garden/outdoor hats to use. amzn.to/3LOMgos

You give me too much credit! I just made it up as I went along!
@@hillbilly-homestead Really?! Wow, well then your property is pretty well organized and you are an efficient person. 👍
I'm a first time watcher, do you share which country you do permaculture in?
Glad to be the 200th sub, great job my dude
Thanks so much for being #200! Let me know if there's anything you'd like me to make a video over and I'll try and make one!
Thanks, I will use hay for mulch. Why didn't you just run and get a pile of straw, instead of carrying two 5 gallon buckets to and fro?
Agreed. That would have been way easier. I've since changed to that method and moved the hay entirely.

Thanks, I Love your style, great simply described, positive information, brilliant!
Thank you kindly Had! I hope i was able to earn your Sub!
Thanks for sharing this, may I ask approx how many full sized sweet potatoes you get to one of those buckets please?
There is a follow up video where this specific bucket year I got zero. That was mainly becase I planted too late in the season. There are other youtube channels that have had success where they are getting 5-10 smaller sweet potatoes, kinda skinny and long. A 5gal bucket is NOT the ideal way to grow sweet potatoes, if you get get a wider container they'll appreciate it alot more.
How long does it take for the potatoes to harvest?
4 months or more
i have a clay rich soil in middle TN. will potatoes grow there?
You should be able to no problem. If you're worried you could break up the ground a bit before you plant into it.

If you had a small hoophouse or Martha Tent you may be able to keep them in there as well.
if it's a warm day w sun you can put anything outside fir sun. heat lamps or grow lights. or by a window will work
