Prof Kishore Mahbubani’s enlightened remark is straight to the point. After almost two centuries of humiliation by the Europeans and the Japanese, today’s China is like a volcano ready to erupt at any moment. But as Chinese ancient philosophers millennial ago had taught the Chinese to be peace loving (和平共处), magnanimous (己所不欲 勿施于人), and patience is a virtue (百忍成金) etc. they have by far stomached the repeated US military instigations in the South China Sea.
But the ancient philosophers had also taught them that if you can tolerate no more, just do it (忍不尽忍 即为之)。
US economy is fast declining. An inescapable fate which a war mongering nation would definitely suffer. This had similarly happened far too many times to a unified China since year 211 BC and even two thousand years earlier to that to various fragmented Chinese nations.
Western nations are wise to pull out their moles from Hong Kong three years ago when their sabotaged acts failed to subvert China through Hong Kong. Xinjiang and Taiwan are the latest remnant cards which the Japanese and the Western politicians are trying their hands at to subvert China. No Islamic states has ever supported the Christian West’s (who had killed millions of Muslims) accusations of Xinjiang Uighur Muslims being tortured.
Taiwan was ceded to Japan in year 1895 when China was down and out. It’s a serious symbol of humiliation to China which would definitely take it back, comes what may. Chairman Mao had said sovereignty is not negotiable, not even a threat could be tolerated. Hence even the new China was poor in 1951, they fought bravely and gallantly against the 14-nation UN alliance army led by the US whose Commander-in-Chief had said China would not dare to join in even their northern border towns with North Korea were bombed by the US bombers. Eventually China sent in almost a million troops and finally defeated the invincible US troops who had to beg for truce and settled in a peace talk.

China's century of humiliation is best summarized in a passage in Mencius, "thus when Tian is going to give a great responsibility to someone, it first makes his mind endure suffering. It makes his sinews and bones experience toil, and his body to suffer hunger. It inflicts him with poverty and knocks down everything he tries to build. In this way Tian stimulates his mind, stabilizes his temper and develops his weak points."

The CCP caused more harm to the Chinese people than the century of humiliation that caused harm to the foreign Manchu dynasty. Mao basically thanked the Europeans for making the evil Wing dynasty weak. Kishore apparently has not read Mao's writing on the Qing dynasty. Yes. Year 1860 is not very distant from now and the ruins of the Summer Palace are still standing in the western part of Beijing. What are those sanctions imposed by EU in comparison with the scale of humiliation brought on the Chinese by the imperialist forces for almost two centuries? Are the western nations and Japan thinking that they can do anything they like on the Chinese soil, such as hanging a notice saying "Dogs and Chinese are not allowed into the park" and trying to yank Taiwan out of the Chinese territory, they will surely resurface the latent and vociferous feeling of humiliation of the Chinese. What had the West to the Chinese people when they suffered with human right under the Manchu emperors? What did the British do for democracy in Hong Kongers under their rule? Only now, they talk about human rights and abuses in Xinjiang (which are maliciously fabricated for political purposes) and freedom and democracy in Hong Kong?
